I am trying to change the new texture for the model to add a 2 at the end so I don't replace the original. How do I make the model use the new texture in 3ds max?
Use the M3 plug ins for 3ds max to import your model, apply a sc2 type material with the texture you desire to use and export it back to M3, though, you'll probably lose some information as the plug in is stil under development.
For a simple texture name change I recommend you use a hex editor and edit your file that way, I know it sounds hard but it's pretty easy, and it will make you not lose that extra information you'll lose if you import the model into 3ds max, here's how:
- Download any hex editor, I'll use XVI32.
- Extract the .m3 model you wish to edit, I'll be using a zealot.
- Open the .m3 model with the hex editor, should be file -> open -> find your model -> press ok
- Find the "search" feature of the hex editor (usually ctrl + f) and search for ".dds" as a text string.
- The hex editor should now point you to the match of ".dds" and you should have something like Assets\Textures\unitname_diffuse.dds, for example in my case I have "Assets\Textures\Zealot_diffuse.dds"
- Change it to unitname_diffus2.dds, the point is just to edit one character of it and you're done.
Note that most of the models also have more maps within them so if you want to change other textures like the normal map, specular map you'll have to modify the names for them too.
