So, I don't know exactly why you want the image flipped, but now you can do it directly for Dialog (Trigger) with the action Set Dialog Item Rotation (Dialog - Set (Last created dialog item) rotation to 180 for (All players) rotate in 180º, it flip the image) and for layouts you can use TextureCoords, also you save some space in your map :) .
Just because you use GUI, it didn't mean you're bad or good. Blizzard use GUI in all his custom maps (and Heroes of The Storm use GUI too).
Is it worth it to continue? Only you can answer this, are you exhaust of all the effort and so? Are you getting at least some feedback?
I don't know what kinda of map are you doing, and to be honest, I ask the same question to me every time I open my map (unreleased because I have noone to talk about or discuss).
The thing about hiding the animated doodad in fog, there's a function in data that pause the doodad while not visible to a player, someone could point that better them me, but if not, I can try to found out where I saw that.
Now, about the light, I don't know if I completely understand what you want to do, but you can always manipulate things if you desire, use a dummy light and move it around with trigger (or data), also you can change the size, angle and anything.
Blizzard made it :P from Heroes of The Storm. Also you can use some effect inside SC2 to 'cover' the blade (because I agree with @TheSC2Maniac: Go ).
The problem with 'trying to fix the blade inside the hand while not attacking' is that you'll need to reanimate him (at least the walk and stand animation), but my suggestion with some visual effect in his hand, can make it work just fine if the effect cover all the blade area.

Also, just a little thing in here, you can flip the image directly in the editor (if you use it as dialog image).

You're supposed to open 'browse' in the console, not search directly for a dds.
Also to export it, right-click on FILE NAME, not the image on the right side.

Take a look at behavior 'Baneling - Explode'

How to create and how to import it on a map. Also a little add here, you can only change dependencies after the map is saved and compiled.

People used to duplicate, some types (behavior, model, actor) is used for more then one thing, and just editing, could mess with all the linked types.
Yes, instead of map, create a new Mod, the extension will be .SC2Mod and people can add it in Dependencies menu inside File menu of their map.

I'm not a modeler (unfortunately :'( )
In the map, you can attack the other Artanis (or cast any of Artanis base spell) and the blade appear as @Zarxiel93: Go said.

From Heroes of The Storm.
Include textures, models, animation (and facial animation) and ragdoll.
