maybe you should make the effect just do -500 damage, rather than "spell damage".
i'm a bit rusty (it's been months) but tweak that damage effect. If it's doing "something", then the problem isn't getting it to do it but rather what it's doing. try other effect parameters if you can. i forgot if there's a simple "add life" effect rather than a negative damage number, but just try something other than spell damage, like a basic damage effect.
OH WAIT
also make sure the parameter for the effect isn't a percentile parameter and that it's a clear cut damage parameter (rather than -500 damage it does -500% or maybe -0.05%.
i think you can simply remove the upgrade in data. it's probably set to be pre purchased. also you should clear any behaviors or abilities that match that name from the unit, to make sure it's not showing up when it's already there. sorry if this isn't specific, but i haven't looked into that mod yet

If you mean that as in "I'm going to give my opinion on terrains that have absolutely nothing to do with this thread and aren't even posted here", then why would you even want to do that?

no offense, but if you're gonna make a new units, go insane with it.
i think a new "effective and fair unit" won't grab enough attention to whatever you're using it in.
nevertheless, this unit idea of yours is fine.

all of those ideas are brilliant.... and i'm having trouble with textures too
the white could be a general specularity problem (reacts intensely with any small light source)

i think that's easy with the zealot stepping... all actors have default sounds for movement (not voice responses, but sounds like an engine rev'ing).
all you have to do is apply that sound to the actor or movement animation (havent tried this but should work).
in the case of the stone zealot, you could probably just pump the volume on his default movement sound. try that before anything else
