posted a message on [Nexus Word Wars] - Official Thread

Hey Rodrigo, was playing your map and I find the text that everyone is typing to be very distracting. The amount of text ends up being too much and we really don't need to see so much of it. I think that if you were to decrease the time the text (chat messages) lasts on screen to like 1 or 2 seconds, that would clear the screen up quite a bit. Alternatively, if you are unable to do that, you could just instantly cause chat messages to be cleared as soon as they are type, and have them appear in a dialog (that can be hidden). That way people who want to be able to see the chat messages are able to, and those who do not can also hide them.

Also, I think your scoring of "Total words typed" is a bit unfair. Players who type mostly 3 letter words would probably end up with more words than those typing out the big long words. You should be able to keep track of how many "characters" each player types. Assuming you keep track of how big the words are that a player successfully types. Then just add up the number of characters and there you go. This could be a "second score" if you don't want to remove the total words. Or you could turn it into something like "Average word length" that the players typed, etc.

We had this same problem in our map, and xenrathe managed to get it to work properly. I'm not sure what he did, but I will refer him to this topic so he can post his solution.

I really like the effects you got going here. Very nicely done! :)

I think we need to have a "Super Unit" contest where people make crazy units like this. Would be a lot of fun and we'd see some really neat stuff.

I think you're confusing people. I never talked about health regen, nor was I the one who made the video and killed the boss with Thors. I killed the boss with a whole bunch of siege tanks in siege mode, since they were out of the boss' range. Then I would just send cannon fodder to keep the boss busy and away from the siege tanks.

Wanted to repeat this, since it is still wrong in the news :/

And by the way: did anyone actually try the map?

I answered your question earlier. The reason is because you created the map in an EU SC2 Editor, and the map was opened in a US game. That caused a localization error where some names and such don't appear unless you fix the map localization issues.

I played your map. I'll say that it was unique in terms of what was expected of a boss battle. I don't think anyone else thought to have a normal melee type of game be a build up to the actual boss. However, this was a SCRIPTED BOSS contest, and as such, your boss was extremely lacking. In fact, the boss itself had no real scripting or abilities. Unless that spawning queen and the other spawning units were the boss' "abilities". Other than that, the boss did nothing more than auto-attack. So it's not surprising that you received almost no votes due to that fact that it seems like you didn't even meet the requirements of a scripted boss. Or if you did, then you BARELY did.

Also before, I never said that I finished your map in 30 seconds. I said that the actual boss battle was only about 30 seconds of the whole video.

posted a message on [Request] Smash TV Contestant 3D Model

Hello, for my Smash TV map, I'm hoping that someone could please create a model of a Smash TV contestant. It's fairly simplistic, and I think we could use some stuff in-game as well as a base. The contestant is muscular, shirtless, wears colored pants, a helmet with a chin strap, white boots, and some white arm guards. He does "not" need to have the "W" on his belt buckle. Just a regular belt is fine. His helmet and pants should be team colored. Finally, he should have some kind of weapon that he holds.

Aside from the model, he would need to have some of the basic animations that Blizzard models have. Attack, death, spell, standing, etc.

Here are some pictures to show what he looks like:

    Picture1Picture2

    Picture3

    http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/5782/terrain003b.jpg

The last 2 pictures are the Spectre Prisoner model from in-game (campaign). He has the good muscular build, shirtless, pants, etc. So I think he might be a good base to start from. Not sure if we can remove those tattoo....maybe they're decals? But anyway, would be better without tattoos. We should also remove his little twitching animation lol

Would be much appreciated if anyone is able to help us out with this. It goes without saying that you would receive the appropriate credit. I don't know much about things like how much the poly count should be, but just something at a similar detail level of the prisoner model. I am free to answer any further questions that may be required.

    Thanks again for any help!

That's exactly why my boss has NO auto attack. When he's not using abilities, he's blinking/moving around letting people get in some damage ;) All abilities were designed in a way that there is a way to dodge/cancel the effect of the ability.

Thanks ;) Quite impressive you put together your boss in 2 - 3 hours. Especially for someone not very experienced. Excellent job done ;)

Yeah, vjeux originally misnamed this contest. I asked him right at the start if it needed to be WoW bosses, and he said no. So I asked him why he didn't just call it a "Scripted Boss Contest", and he said "Oh well, too late now." lol

So yeah, the point of this contest was scripted bosses, but for the sake of people understanding what a scripted boss is, WoW was used as a basis.

Well for the record, there was no stipulation that you could not enter a previously created boss. I think it was kind of assumed that a new boss should be created for the contest, but this was never mentioned as a requirement.

I think I'm in the same boat as Bibendus in that the boss and things related to the boss were created after the announcement of the contest, but some other stuff like some gameplay mechanics, the terrain, etc was created before hand as my current main project. Our boss was created afterwards. For those interested in some proof, I've opened our project forum to the public and they can see the discussions xenrathe and I had during the development.

Just a note, I have NOT released the map on Bnet to the public due to the fact that this IS part of my main map, and I'd rather not remove most of the game (since everything is linked together). If anyone wants to play the Smash TV boss in multiplayer (Bnet US), send me a message on IRC and I'd be happy to host it for you and your friends ;)

The reason we can't see the name is cause your map is localized for EU, and we're on US.

    @zenx1: Go

Thanks zenx1. While it does seem quite hectic (and it is a frantic pace), it's not nearly as hard to dodge the stuff as it seems. There are many audio cues for what's coming, and as long as you are quick on your feet and can do some micro, then you shouldn't have too much trouble ;) The fight is designed in such a way that it IS possible to kill the boss without taking ANY damage. However, it IS meant to be a tough boss fight (being the final boss and all), so we can't make it too easy. When you win against the odds, it's that much more satisfying. And if you lose...well, hopefully it'll fuel your motivation to try again ;)
