"Ive never met an artist that closets his work", maybe not (although that goes along defining what an artist is, but hey that's off topic?)

What I have seen plenty of, is people buying artist works' and setting it up in a drawer or closet... that's common and regrettable...

I agree that gameplay is more important than popularity. However, what's the point of making an awesome 1 hour rpg if no one will ever play it?

Having done it, not everything has to come out of instant success, bypassing the popularity system is a better route than catering for a specific fringe...

posted a message on Catch Boosters?

Even with scripts to do the job, "bigbrother" would take ages for it to be fair on people (resulting in a narrowed view of things).

Apparently the present system is to boost, whether on bnet or on forums or what have you... seems that what you should be angry against is excessive boosting, not like "original" boosting just to get your map out there... and that coupled with reputations, blizz' own thing blabla bla ...tis mindboggling

Don't get me wrong I'd read a long ass result thread if someone did try to do it.. or help out if I could to get results, but I'm afraid these results would only be disappointing (everyone boosts or something)...

I think it would behoove us mapmakers to accept that bypassing blizz is vital... and whatever everyone seems to think, I'd say the only way is through download rate like stats, number of times maps are played and enjoyed ; I mean it should be quite simple to, instead of barring with payment, bar with a required comment like "number of times I played this map, with how many friends did I share it with, what "score" do I give this map (playability, originality, looks...)"...

The real difficulty is lining all mapmakers on the same "page", still I'd like to think that'd be doable.

I guess I'm just not into checking into other peoples dirty laundry, BUT I think it could be useful to try...

good luck if you persist, and do share the results.

One extra vote for the pink ling being set as a "default" avatar for newcomers, it's realy nice , but...the whole point of the unicorn is incentive to change the picture (no?) and get another one that showcases a bit more who's behind the avatar ... the pinkling (eating the unicorn or not) is cool so u might get a huge cluster of people keeping it... On a personal note, I'd be happy to draw avatars for people in need... (what they want of course, within reason and a reasonable delay).. just pm me.

This one pretty much covers it in case you haven't been following

    http://www.sc2mapster.com/polls/what-are-your-thoughts-on-the-marketplace/

But for the time being It look like mapmaker has to pay players to play their map instead.

edit : just finished reading it, sorry for the double thread, dump it if you feel it's redundant (although the poll choices differ)

"it looks like a mapmaker has to pay to get their map played" good one

posted a message on Would you make players pay to play your maps?

I wouldn't. Guess I wanted to know where you guys are at.

Guess a poll would be a good idea?

    Edit: my 2 cents:

I feel we should be thankful that blizz (and only blizz) gave us the access and free reign to part of their software, I'm sure some people will profit from it, but like for pro gaming, only a minuscule percentage of mapmakers will...

I'd rather thank blizz for what's available now: a game WITH an editor lengthening its life expectancy to a level unheard of before..., I'd even cry over spilled milk (loss of lan or other, all "new world order" related issues) rather than go after them for waiting 4 or 5 years before letting go (they did "loose" scbw much earlier)...

They own the shit... how would you react in "their" shoes...? (I'm oversimplifying the blizz persona of course)

I feel this editor is a milestone for future gaming... just like the internet guy killed the tv, blizzard is creating a monstrous precedent with this move... with sc2 editor you don't need to buy another game EVER... you can choose to, but you'll never buy another shitty one that's for sure... and why would you, with sc2mapeditor you can do them yourself... I use to design board games when I was a kid, my kid will design video games at half the age I did my games...

In short, get a job, cause the the future is everything media related will be free... uh I mean pre paid for...

posted a message on "island vs continental" mains melee map needs testers

Hi all, I'd like to find players to test my map: Bishop to Queen 8

It's an 8 spawn location melee map with 4 island mains and 4 mains accessible by ground.

Wait wait wait, "it'll never work"..."it can't be done"

I feel free for all for up to 8, 4v4 3v3 2v2v2v2 or 1v1 could all be viable with these parameters, furthermore I feel it's exiting undiscovered country...

My main concern is how to balance between the two types of mains (island and "continental") ... not try to convince anyone not interested by the concept.

So... My first take on it is accessible http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/bishop-queen-8/ / downloadable / published on battlenet .

I gave rich minerals instead of regular and an extra geyser to the island mains, and here is my query needing input:

What would be a "fair" trade off or compromise between the two types of mains?

Should the "continental" main have less minerals or the same? (since they can direct expo). Should the mains minerals resource count be the same with enough minerals to one base for 20 min? Is the rich minerals on island and regular minerals on "continental" a good compromise? (by the by those are two solutions I will be favoring, since the topographic difference island vs "continental" is the main issue, not the resources that should go with them)

How does the number of mineral nodes fit into this equation? (I feel been unable to direct expo warrants more nodes on the island then on the "continental" main... but how many more, this not discarding the amount of minerals per nodes that can serve as a rebalancing final tweak )

For the 2v2 3v3 etc, I still have not dwell'd in that editor strata yet, and getting fair repartition of spawn locations (for instance 4v4, evenly distributing the players into 2 island and 2 continental spawns per team) has yet to be done... A little help on that issue would be invaluable, since I get the general idea of how to do it, but lack time to devote to this issue.

Hope you play it and have fun (the free for all and 1v1 should really be a novel melee adventure, full of drops and bloodbathing play...), and do feel free to remakethe map into a "balanced" version or what not (so long as I still get credit in the map info and get a comment on the sc2mapster map page with the new map name), I would be delighted to see people grab my concept and run with it...

Hope to get word from y'all on the minerals issue soon... I've already updated it once (giving more minerals to the "continental" mains to catch up to the island's resource count).

posted a message on Grammar helper.

I'm on eu and volunteer for spelling and other help. pm me and we will sort out how / when I can help you on what YOU need.

In any case, anyone desiring to explain (make accessible) their custom maps to players is to be commended and helped...

And remember, since english is not your first language, you are already "working hard" when using it to communicate with the community... furthermore you think in several languages and that is a definite plus... keep at it, you are already doing fine and pretty soon you'll get to a point where you feel comfortable communicating with this "earth dominating" language... Never let posters get to you on this issue... On a lighter note, Hungary is real sweet ...

posted a message on [Official] Forum upgrade suggestions

Nice thread, I'm not quite sure if this has been discussed already but here goes:

Could sc2mapster make publicly available the maps' download stats? Updated weekly or something if it's a huge hassle. I volunteer for the "grunt" work if any.

I feel this could greatly improve mapmakers "chi", and it could possibly be a gateway to organizing an unbiased database for the mass player pool (looking for maps) to steer towards and then (one day) rely upon, bypassing blizz's popularity system.

Of course most maps would just get invariable numbers and that can be a downer, but the most popular ones would have significant numbers to back up their hype on the net...

as for all the proposed ideas in the op, I'm not so sure I have any useful opinions about most... besides... I think sc2mapster is great.

The only one I vote for is "When selecting a thread always show post #1". I think it's a given that you need to read that op even if you intend to only scan (not read) through the whole thread (my o my the growing number of people who do that with everything...)

Ohh and about the posts about strict moderating... warning banning etc... I'll keep quiet for a change.
