A lot of hate for TDs all of a sudden once Squadron TD soared to top. At least Squadron TD added a twist to the genre. If not a twist, then least like the other TDs on the list. It's arguably fun but hey it gave what the bnet audience wanted. It's doing something right to attract the childish players if that's how you wanna call them.
Most probably just used assets or googled some images and stuck them together w/ photoshop or free photoshop alternatives like paint.net or gimp. Magic wand, lasso tool and layers are easy to use, and can be used to make simple but good looking compositions.
I had the same problem as jcraigk. What I did was use a different key for the new scheme. When loading bank data, I will first check if the player has a key from the old scheme. If so, load the data from the old key. When saving, save to new key and remove the old key.
A couple weeks after publishing the new scheme, I get rid of the old scheme loading.

Fact that this was made 2 weeks after the map editor came out in beta is pretty damn impressive to me.
Made a topic about it last year:

Do we have any map on the first page who's publisher is an sc2mapster regular? What else besides Mafia and Sotis?

Apparently bnet players like to watch and see masses of units get destroyed w/ minimal micro involved.
That or DotA-style maps.

I wouldn't call SC2 as just "some" presence

It's more like the player base doesn't want to scroll past page 2 to play something different.
