I've been doing a hybrid of both. For my first map, I just threw down the game play and then built up the terrain and added in cinematics...sorta shooting from the hip most of the time. I think doing it this way for newbies is very important. The editor is just too overwhelming unless you have the perseverance of protoss Templar :)! Laying out the gameplay and just getting something you and others can play through can give you a sense of accomplishment and help you push forward...especially if you are new to programming. However, I only recommend this for your first map, once you got the basics then it is really important to plan.
I think these tutorials should go on the Custom Campaign Initiative Home Page. As well as some of the basic/beginner tutorials from the wiki. What do you guys think?
I got the Tech Tree to Allow Siege Mode, but it doesn't appear in game. I can research it in my tech lab, but I want the player to have it immediately. What do I do?
Dr. Super Evil...is your new guru, if he is not too overwhelmed with his life!! But post in the Data Editor there are a lot of folks who hang out in that forum who are awesome!!
I'm really confused about my AI. It doesn't seem to want to build units and attack. Am I missing something...maybe in Player Properties, not enough supply, feast of a thousand...I thought I got them all.
What do you guys do to get your AI to attack? Any advice helps. Below is a sample of my Wave. I run it from another Trigger. It actually worked a couple of random times and now nothing.

The map is both amazing and terrible!! Amazing in that I made it and terrible in that I made it!!
I am looking for some dedicated testers who will give me some serious help as I am not super good at this stuff. Please PM or Post here. I'm also very interested in recruiting a "new person to the editor". Preferably someone who is also working on their own map and struggling with the coding, concept or story. I think learning/working on this with someone new to it can be beneficial. So hit me up!!
Please bring the criticisms! Even if you think I am aware of the bugs or limited terrain...please please be critical and tell me. I really want this to be an excellent campaign and I know it will take a lot of work, but I need the help!
It should be in your SCII Folder right from the start. It has a green icon with a tool in it. Perhaps it is hidden in Maps or Mods. Worse comes to worse just search for it on your PC.
I'm pretty sure you can use the Editor with all its assets.
Check out Blizz's tutorials and this site's wiki to get started:
Abandonment 01 - Harbinger. Please check out. I'm still working on getting the "Skip Cinematics" part worked out, as well as others issues.

I think having an Advisor would be a good idea. If the group is 5 or more people it might get a little overwhelming for the advisor, but it could be a rotating position. I'm sorta envisioning the group pushing folks to update and do play through of the group's maps on a weekly basis as well as checking in, offering encouragements, being ra-ra.
We could have a hazing ritual that involves a map! :)
Perhaps this is more geared to the custom campaign newbies, I am one. I'm envisioning 3-5 people play-testing, learning, critiquing and pushing each other to get their map or maps out to the larger community for more rigorous map testing.
I wanted to gather all the new, newish and not so good at modding folks together and try and support one another. I've been trying to get my custom campaign 1st episode out and well...it still isn't out. It's sorta done, but boy does it need some help!! I got to thinking that I really need a buddy or buddies to test my map, but that person or persons is still learning the editor...cause well it is just embarrassing to give your "heart and soul" map to an expert and realize that person could crank out your map in 1 hour and you've spent countless nights reading the wiki and cursing blizzard.
Anyways, I got some ideas of how the group can work, but I'm hoping to hear from people who might be interested in really supporting each other on their epic quest to finish their damn map or maps! Speak Up!
I'll be bumping this thread for a little while to recruit folks.
We should trade our 1st maps and help each other out. I've been "done" with my first map for a while, but keep tweaking it and changing things and realize I just need to get people to play it. Perhaps some other folks will join forces with us.

Any ideas on why the castanar bridges can not be deleted, rotated and have a crazy black shadow??? Did I do something to my editor? Please help!
What do people do for bridges in their maps?
0
So....bridges. I can't get my castanar bridge to move anymore. It has a green point now and is not selectable. :( How do you fix this??
I've tried to miss around with the show layers, pathing and some other unfruitful tries.

Map nights might be too intimidating for new mappers. For me, I have a 20 min single player map, so it wouldn't be a good candidate for a map night.
Probably going to try and put something together for the Custom Campaign Initiative.
