Now a days buying the expansions is mainly for the campaign. I think LoTV still also gets you four extra commanders (swann, zagara, vorazun, and karax). I could be wrong on that though. The multiplayer stuff should be the same. You can play ladder on a free account, right? There's only one ladder now, there used to be three.
Wings of Liberty Campaign is free, so I don't think there much point in buying that one at all. As for deluxe editions there's a few digital goods such as skins in SC2, and some other games like diablo 3. Personally I don't think skins are worth the extra money.
So if I were to do it again, since I really like the single player campaigns, I would buy Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops. I would buy them all as a standard edition.

You can use commanders in coop mode which i think is pretty fun. They each have unique armies and play styles.
