Actually, Adun's contribution was really important, principally for the meaning of his sacrifice. Not killing other protosses is a fundamental principle in their philosophy since the end of the Aeon of Strife.
As you must know, the dark templar destroyed their link with the Khala. The Conclave saw that behaviour as a herecy, and ordered the executor Adun to kill them all secretly in order to avoid other protosses disconecting themselves too.
Adun believed that killing their own race would mean an involution, that's why he hided, protected and trained the dark templars; being the first Protoss who disobeyed the Conclave. When the cover was blown, he had no alternative but give them a vessel to get out of Aiur.
Then, in the day where the dark templars where going into the ship, The judicators apeared and a confrontation started between both factions. That would surely fall into a new Protoss Civil War capable of destroying all the growth of the race since the Aeon of Strife. Adun stood in the middle, and with a enormus psionic blast (like Triceron describes) gave time to the Nerazim to depart vanishing in the air.
About the last question, the Aiur Protoss knew that the Dark Templar had survived, that's why they praise him.
EDIT: Freudian slip. I meant Adun istead of Aiur xD
