Introduction!

To start off, I just want to say this is the first time for me to post a tutorial of anything so please bare with me lol!
Also I learned initially how to create my first unit through a tutorial written by Bifuu Biffu's Tutorial I recommend reading it!
The tutorial worked nicely for me, but i noticed his version of the editor was different from mine and things just wouldnt work right, like even with following the right steps i would get the "half white orb" as a visual for my unit!

Creating the Unit

Step 1:
First and Foremost figure out what type of unit do you want to make and a name! Mine is Duke Nukemz and is a copy of a Marine
Step 2:
Load up the Data editor in Galaxy editor and choose Units. Data Type> Games> Units. you will then have a list of units load up in the box right below.

Now while you are viewing the units tab look at the very top and you will see File - Edit - View - Data. Click on Data and then Click on Add Object

After clicking Add Object you will have a box appear in the middle called Object Properties, this is where you will create your initial unit!

In the Box you will have Input Boxes that you need to fill in with information. I will use my Duke Nukemz character as the base of this new unit.
so furthermore here we go!
Object Properties:
Name: Duke Nukemz
ID: DukeNukemz
Unit Type: CUnit
Based on: CUnit
Object Family: Melee
Race: Terr
Object Type: Unit
Field Values: Copy From > Marine
Then Hit OK!!

There you go! Done with the Unit part, and now we have to give it the Actor part!
Step 3:
Here will will give the Unit an Actor, it is just as simple as the Unit section!
So you remember how you went to data type > Units. Well now goto Data Type > Actor > Actors! and you will have the box right below change to all the Actor information!

Now we are going to do the same thing for Actors as we did in Step 2 for Units. Goto where it says up at the top File - Edit - View - Data Click on Data and then Click on Add Object
Now you should have had another Object Properties box popup in the center with more information input spots that need to be filled in, so here we go!
Object Properties:
Name: Duke Nukemz
ID: DukeNukemz
Actor Type: CActorUnit
Based On: GenericUnitBase
Parent: -Leave Blank-
Doodad Type: NotDoodad
Field Values: Copy From > Marine
Then Hit OK!!

But before we go further you need to look the the right side of your Data Editor and you will see a small box with the title Token.
in that small box you will see Parent, ID, and unitName you will need to replace unitName which should have Marine next to it, you will then replace Marine with the name of you new unit in which my case would by Duke Nukemz

There you go! Actors part is done! now for the final step! The final step will take place in the Models section.
Step 4:
Our New Unit now needs a model so we can see it! so lets get to it.
The Model section is just as quick and easy as the first two.
So you remember how you went to data type > Units. Well now goto Data Type > Art and Sound > Models! and you will have the box right below change to all the Models information!

Now we are going to do the same thing for Models as we did in Step 2 for Units.
Model Type: CModel
Based On: Unit
Race: Terran
Parent: -Leave Blank-
Field Values: Copy From > Marine
Then Hit OK!!

Conclusion!

Now that all those steps have been taken, you should goto your terrain editor and goto units and select player 1, skip the second box, select terran, and for the final box select unit and your brand new unit should be there! mine shows a white box with a green figure in the middle, but if you put your cursor over the box it will pop up its name!
This works for me every time!
So hopefully you will have the same luck.
Also sorry if this was rather confusing to read, As I stated before this is my first time writing one and I tried to do my best to make it easy to read.
Good Luck!
and thanks Biffu for the tutorial you wrote to stear me in the right Knowledge of creating a unit.
Thankyou so much, Ive been lost on creating new units since the updates. Biffus I had done when the beta editor was added, and worked great, but now I had gotten lost with the up dates, and I needed to know how to do it with the updated version so I can learn how to do some other game modes and fun stuff. I have not ran through the tutorial here yet, but I am about to, I trust it works lol. Thanks again!
Could not get it to work at first then I looked closer at the pictures and realized your "View Raw Data" buttom was pushed, I wasnt able to have CUnit on my add object options until I noticed that the view raw data was on. after that the option was there by default! thnx again!
Seriously how many times do you only change the same fields...?
It would be awesome if there was a wizard:
New unit... then first page of the wizard lets you choose type like worker etc..., name, and maybe a few other traits like cost. Then 2nd page does art and selection and stuff like that, then 3rd page will let you choose a weapon or go through the weapon wizard to make one... then done! A weapon wizard would be awesome too; it's such a hassle making missile weapons with all the effects, mover, unit, actors, sound actors, etc... would be awesome in a 5 step wizard or something.
haha yea sorry about your confusion =] im glad it worked for you!! i was gettin so darn aggrivated trying to get the unit to work right by following bifuus tut. so i just really had to play with it.
@OneTwoSC
I completely agree, that would make things way easier and not to mention more organized.. my editor is a cluster of mess.. creating new units and all that stuff not to mention all of the "copy" duplicates.. wich is really annoying at times.
For anyone having any issues with this tutorial (Such as a black/white blob appearing instead of the Marine) and you're using Windows 7/Vista
Choose to Run as Administrator when you start the program. I did that, and solved 30 minutes of headache.
and this tutorial, saves lives
been banging my head against a wall trying to get it to work, this is quicker than biffus' way and running as an admin makes sense with those bloody circles on the editor :)
This tutorial has worked well for me, with one exception - and hopefully it's acceptable for me to post the question here.
My goal is to 'specialize' Terran from the start with things like modified command centers.
Such as starting with a modified Orbital Command or Fortress.
This tutorial works, but when I go to place the new Fortress or OC it shows up as a regular Command Center.
Unfortunately this editor is much more complicated than the SC1 or WC3 editor, so I assume I am overlooking something simple.
Hmm easy enough tutorial to follow, but the editor that comes with the retail version does not have many of the options that yours has. For example when I have to choose model type the editor does not have a CModel option, only Foliage and General.
I also noticed that when creating units you cant select, view, or change unit portraits so you might want to add a section on that.
Finally, apparantly the editor also does not list many of the models in the model list. For example, I cannot find Tosch or Nova's model in the model lists.
Just a little thing, some images don't seem to load properly for me. Maybe you can add the images as attachments to the post so they get loaded from sc2mapster.com instead of imageshack or photobucket etc?
Finally, apparantly the editor also does not list many of the models in the model list. For example, I cannot find Tosch or Nova's model in the model lists.
I do have it on dependant. Im starting to get really pissed off though since half the tutorials Im reading seem to have options that the retail version of the editor does not.
For the record, the dependancies on the map Im making are:
Liberty (Mod)
Liberty Multi (Mod)
Liberty (Campaign)
Liberty Story (Campaign)
I open the Data Editor
Data Type: Units
Units Tab
Data Source: All Data
Search: Nova
Nothing...well actually the only thing that comes up is her portrait.
Clear search, organize list alphabetically, scroll down to N:
So Im not really sure how the heck she can be in the unit list to put on the map but not be anywhere else.
So unless theres another version of the editor out that everyone else seems to know about but me, I am using every single dependancy option the standard retail Galaxy Editor has and Im still not getting options to edit hero stats, view/change portraits, I litterally could go on but most of the other issues are not related to unit creation.
sorry for have not responding, I have been away for a while and still wont be able to get back on for a bit to do anything else, I havnt bought the retail version yet due to lack of time =/
I will take a look at my friends editor and see if i cant figure out what your problem is.

You can change the portrait but its linked to a model or another class like that... I'm not 100% what one because I'm not at my gaming PC. You CAN change it, just not under the unit editor part... you should see whats linked to it that does the portrait tho. I'll post how later

I am trying to make a custom Banshee unit for my map. I just want to make banshee with "fire when moving" option.
I did everything as in tutorial:

But when i want to change unit name from Banshee to my Meserszmit i can't see it on the list.
Thanks for the tutorial
It would be interesting if someone could make an addendum for creating/modifying a Zerg Unit that Burrows. Ive tried and had criss-crossing between the original and new unit when burrowing or unborrowing. Ive read someone else had problems with a hydra, with various back and forth comments to find a solution, but a straight step-by-step tutorial on how to do it would be great.

Blizzard really needs a way to simplify this.

Open dependencies and move Liberty Story (Campaign) to top of the list by pressing that little up arrow and save map and restart. =D

Nice tutorial, though, very helpful!
