I've noticed this is a common question, and confusing when first approaching the editor. Major problems include the white orb placeholder model instead of a unit, and extraneous copies of things like sounds and basic abilities.
Go to the Unit tab in the data editor.
Find a unit you want to duplicate and customize.
Right click on the unit, click Duplicate Object from the context menu.
Make sure the main unit Actor is checked, leave everything else unchecked. The main actor is the Actor of type Unit, like the "Marine" actor. Press OK to duplicate.
Go to the Actor tab, select your duplicated Unit Actor. Make sure that the TOKEN at the top is properly set your duplicated unit.
Done.
This should prevent the "white orb" problem that is often encountered, and will avoid making six copies of the "Ground" mover and the "Attack" ability and such.
Using the above steps, any linked effects or abilities will still be tied to the original unit. For example, if you duplicate a Marine and then change the Stimpack ability, it will affect both the original and your duplicated unit. If you want to get an independent Stimpack for your duplicated Marine, you would need to duplicate the Stimpack ability and set the duplicated Marine's ability to the duplicated Stimpack, and then modify it. If you're feeling adventurous you can just check the Stimpack ability (and possibly associated Effects) when duplicating the Marine.
If you want anything fancier, you will need to need to check other tutorials. This is a Super Simple tutorial.
