Hey gus. i was just thinking about something, and want to ask if this could be possible like i think it might be cool.
Stargate - you probably know this tv series or even the movie from serval years ago.
a gate creating a wormhole, that lets you travel to other planets connecte to the gate network blablabla.
so i just had this idea..
this would be an epic RPG game btw..
there is the stargate center - the main base with the stargate on earth.
so we create a map, thats the stargate center - nothing more. just the military base with the stargate. probably events on other planets trigger attacks, research etc. on the main base(map).
you're able to dial the gate numbers to other planets from there.. it would be like the real tv series, u have to click your desired 7 (or 8?)chevrons, and if this "planet" exists, it opens the gate, you step through and it loads up the planet map.
this would be infinite expandable.. just create another planet map, add it into the stargate center maps "planet adresses" and thats it.
is this possible?
what about returning to the stargate center, storing stuff, doing research, going onto another planet for x minutes, coming back taking something from the storage, and the research is probably finished (by minutes you played the other map..?)
this idea could grow really big with a team of guys i think this - if its possible - will be just epic.
if its an 3rd person rpg or an rts top down game doesnt matter, the possibilities to combine them is the key.
create a space flight shooter for space missions aboard the stargate spaceships, fighting the goa'ould etc etc..
hope someones able to tell if this is possible, and how hard it could be.
If I remember correctly, wasn't there a old Starcraft: Brood War UMS that used the same idea of gate transportation? I thought the idea was quite interesting, even though I'm not a Stargate fan. With the campaign stuff, the gate mechanic would work much better than it did in Brood War.
Thats awesome. With that this map would have amazing potential. If you are going to make it so players have heroes, doing a save load system in the map would add a lot too as people could use their heroes multiple times.
I'm curious how you did that too if you ever feel like posting up how you did :)
i dont know if this already existed in broodwar, but i just had the idea yesterday thought about it and it works well.
@iHaveReturnd
thanks. yeah the idea behind that is to make it infinite upgradable..
im not sure how much people would like it, but i thought in the future about a community that creates the planet maps, and it grows and grows.
its just adding a new "gate address" to the gate mechanic, and the new planet is accesible.
i was thinking if its possible to create a tool that ppatches the needed new planet address into an map - think that will work.
the heroes and all will be traveling through the planets and finish quests and storys just on every single planet taking hours like it would be on an single rpg right now - if someone creates the planet.
i also thought a lil bit further, im not sure if this is possible, but the storing of heroes and stuff is possible to take to another map, so it should also be possible to upload it to an database..? well time will tell, thats all just ideas.
now i have to gather a team around me because this is a lot of work, and i would need too long for it alone.
btw if someones interested.. heres a list of needed team members.
- terrain artist.
- trigger and data editor artist able to help me out with some stuff.
- someones able to create models like an actual stargate from the tv series and stuff like that.
i know that i have some projects up already, but that idea is just new and very epic i think, so this is my main project now.
Right now I'm working on my soundboard project, and I would like to finish up the Jurassic Park map after that, but I would love to help with this.
I'm not very good with triggers yet but I have used the data editor and terrain a lot. I hope to get into modelling and whatnot as it will be part of my major in college. However, I haven't started that yet.
I didn't think about that factor.. how to transfer the hero between maps. If that would work though, you could have certain items that only come from certain gates and whatnot. People could even submit terrain from non related maps to this if they wanted to.
I'm pretty decent at terraining and triggers. My weakest area is probably the data editor, but even then I've never had a problem I couldn't figure out with time.
If you want to see a video of work I've done, I did this map:
Also, you can make the stargate rotate by duplicating a unit that's not a structure, such as a marine, as well as its actor. Then set the actor model to the Stargate. This way it will have the parameters of a normal unit that can face directions, but still have the model of a stargate without being forced into the same facing direction. Here's a pic that shows this:
Naturally remove all the marine features like attacking and moving, etc.
And one final thing.. Many Stargate projects have been shut down in the past when using models that imitated those of the show. While it's obviously really cool to have an actual stargate in the game, it might be worth just sticking with starcraft materials, so as to not get a cease and desist. I'm not saying that'd definitely happen, but it's a huge bummer if it does.
hey!
nice that at least someone wants to join this project :D
im kinda happy, this one has some potential and could really grow to an big project.
i will add you to the project.
there is nothing done yet, this idea just popped out in the last 2 days, so i dont have a real plan what needs to be done etc.
ill let you know if there is work to do, and also how i thought this might work. also if you have some ideas, youre welcome to tell them.
and thanks for the model stuff - i figured it out already, and it looks okay for now.
now im going to bed, tomorrow i think about the plan behind this thing.
also i forgot to add a needed team member to the list..
- storywriter
very important!
and to the stargate model stuff..well im not sure, but things like garrys mod are using them and are still there.
probably i could send an email to mgm (i think its mgm.. im not sure) and ask about it.
will do that later.
im having some problems right now, hope someones able to help...
first one, is it possible to change units in heigth? i want to simulate the wormhole inside the stargate, but just dont know how to change things in heigth, if its possible.
second is, any ideas on how to change the initial stargate model on a unit to the "powered off" stargate, and change it on trigger execute to "powered stargate"?
That looks so much nicer, actually looking like it could be a really fun map now. You should change the loading screen though, make it a higher resolution and stretch it, instead of center.
Hey, this looks like it can have great potential, and I'd like to sign up as mainly a terrainer (but I can do triggers as well).
Here's some of my previous work:
SC2:
WC3:
i would like to add you to the project.
small problem i have now is organizing the idea.
this stargate function and the main idea to make it an rpg that plays in the stargate universe is kinda all i got yet, but i will figure out the bigger stuff behind that today i think.
well yeah, see it as a tech demo.. 7, 8 or 9 "chevrons" or 250 chevrons is just a copy and paste of code, so this is no problem.
if everything works like i imagine it, that DHD (dial home device) will be replaced by a original one, u know, round thing, symbols around it, and press the middle to dial.
about that changing in multiplayer.. im not sure, i didnt thest it.. that could be a problem.
As i thought about it, if it does not work (changing maps) you either have to do it in singleplayer or create the terrain etc by triggers that you can use the space needed for a mission several times...or you will have to make a system working for every mission and create single maps, but the loading codes can used in all of them
well.. even if this wont work, i think this could be a great singleplayer experience - and you probably could be able to load up the stargate center with others, and trade items with them, fight them for fun with your heroes or something like that.
and i thought on something.. didnt blizzard said somewhere that it will be possible to make coop campaigns?
so loading multiplayer maps HAS to work.
i saked on the battlenet forums, and hope to get some blue answers.
Looks great so far. And by the way, I remember reading earlier that blizzard said map changing WILL work for all players. I don't know if it currently does, but they said that it will.
Also, how exactly are we going to do the gameplay? top-down? 3rd person shooter? Change it depending on the map?
I've also been thinking of various map / story ideas.
This is just brainstorming, and most of it was accurately captured by your image. But we could have the "main" map be an alpha site, rather than the stargate command from the show. This would just give more room to fit in things like upgrades/research without having to copy that area exactly and have limitations. It also allows room for things like exploration, as it's a different spot in the galaxy.
I've started work a bit on a map. Assuming we choose to do this, it could even serve as a first mission/tutorial. Right now, there's a crashed ship which is the starting area. I could even make an intro cinematic of the ship being attacked and crashing. You have to find a stargate to find a way home. Once you get to it, you start being attacked, and must defend the gate while another member of the ships crew is attempting to figure out the correct order of numbers to get home. The crew member will say things like "Chevron 1 is 3! 2 is 6!" and so on while you defend. I think this would be a cool mechanic that shows off dialing, while also letting the person feel smart if they crack the code before the last numbers are given.
the gameplay will have everything.
i thought probably about some space missions on the stargate space ship fighting goa'ould ships or stuff, and also there could be a lone wolf 3rd person creepy mission on a dead space ship or something.
everything is possible :D i love that :)
this sounds very cool for a tutorial intro mission!
if you didnt noticed it, i created a team here on sc2mapster - currently were 3 guys.
there is also a team forum with the concept picture - post every idea you have, infos on your map like screenshots and all stuff related into that forum please, so we have all things together.
im currently working on that multiplayer map changing thing. ill give you infos as soon as i tested serval things out.

Project looks really cool, but shouldnt it be 6 digits instead of 5? then maybe 7th and 8th for the other jumps used for atlantis and universe
