Let me first tell you a bit of history :)
I was addicted to starcraft, and made a few simple 2VS2AI maps to play in lan.
So we could make our ultimate defence -> no restrictions!
I never had the opportunity to participate in the BETA. As I was really into learning on how to use the editor.
Well since the 27th I've been watching lots of tutorials and guides :)
My problem?! My learning experience tells me that I need something to focus on to learn better.
Solution = Start a project :)
Well here is my first project
A creation of a Jump And Run Platform game!
This map will offcourse include powerups, moving objects, checkpoints, ...
I will start of very simple and as time flies by (cause of my work) I hope I'll be able to learn more and more
and improve this project in something BAWESOME! :)
A few points I would like your opinions/help on:
Will I start with an arena and set a teleport location to all different kinds of platform?
Maybe set a voting at start of a map (how much platforms? -> random? or number?)
Should I keep score and maybe award people? If so, what kind of awards?
Shall I remove collision of each player (with other players)? So you could actually walk through each other?
Whats the best way to prevent them moving on the Y-axis?
When someone "dies" should I use checkpoints?
...
If you have any suggestions or are willing to help me out. Just say so :)
If you think I will never make it? I will use my banelings to blow up your house.
If there is alot of interest I'll put up a forum on my server so there is an easier way to communicate.
I also have a TS3 server which I can set online (no sexy talk allowed)
I didn’t even think about new people when the game released lol… Yeah Its a great tool, but its going to be tutorial after tutorial. I would suggest join the irc channel, and then just start going. When you actually get stuck on a function, come to us and let us know what you are trying to do.
Since this game came after War3. The editor is the upgrade to that one
Thanks alot, Will certainly do.
Will need to install an irc client first.
First thing I'll do when I get back home. Is to make a sample map and make it possible to jump and use a simple powerup.
Might not be finished by tonight, but cant wait to start :)
Well Bad news, Just found out the terraining part is for 90% impossible :(
You only have like 3 buildable layers (the ground, 1st layer, 2nd layer) Which is quite boring.
+ you cant make two different layers passable (pl1 on top, pl2 in bottom part).
A shame as this platform part might have triggered lots of potential maps :(
What does Jump and Run even mean? A platformer? Similar to Mario or Banjo and Kazooie? I don't see why having 3 possible variations of height would put such a project on hiatus.
a jump and run platform is indeed something like mario and such.
Well the terraining would difficult. You only have 3 "height" layers you can build
-> which isnt alot :)
Also if you want a player to go through two layers it wouldn't be possible withouht doodads (i think).
@killay: I bet you still can make it with height/doodads
( just edit the units height to the same to the doodad so it only looks like he is standing on it ) You could do a unit collide system, so the game could reconize when they were jumping to a doodad plat.
( It most definitely would take some messing around, but i bet you can duplicate a effect similar to multiple platform. )
Make the first two layers always terrain, and then change it up for the rest. I will mess around with this and see if i can put something together.
Well I thought it for a while to set the unit size to something lower. But I was afraid (with a set amount of doodads) that it might get the FPS for some people, low.
I might be wrong also :D
I would really appreciate it if you could help me on this :)
I might actually get it up and running again, thanks to you and PRDeltoid :D
@killay: Yeah its most def possible.. and it would be a good system to make so we could make maps go high and add more into them. I am still working on it But i am pretty sure I can have a working system within a few days.
The only problem I can think of is, how to set collision on for example an arc.
Is it easy to for example let players run under it and above?
Also,what would be best: a 2D or 2.5D? In my opinion a 2.5 dimensional.
The only thing that is still bugging me is:
let say you have 4 players, should they be running on one lane (while they walk through each other) or 4?
The advantage with one line is the use of weapons/powerups is easier.
Had thought of this, but the view of your unit is kind of misleading (can't really find the right words for it :p )
And as I don't find a way to rotate the unit on his side.
But in the mean time I'm making some small Td's and view tests as learning progress :)
but I might ask some info.
EDIT:
Ow wait is that unit seen from top or side?
Cant really see it with the low quality.

I know, thats whats fun about it :) I like challenges. Cause of such difficulty I stumble upon things I else wouldnt find in tutorials.

Well, I've been checking on Link Removed: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?x69mazi516uijb7 and have to say like 30% of them are interesting to use.

Make it like tg\hat reaper map, where all the models are sideways and the camera is top down. http://forums.sc2mapster.com/development/project-workplace/3677-reaper-arena/
@zeldarules28: Go
Indeed, you could add some sort of gravity trigger which would pull your unit south when not blocked by cliffs.
This is probably not a great idea for a first project, but...I'd start by asking whoever made the reaper platformer for some advice.
