I think they are simply extracted from the games, probably located inside some MPQs, as Blizzard use the same model-file-type .m3 for all their 3D games. Of cause, SC2 models are using more advanced textures and such. Also I think WC3 models are too old to really work inside SC2, I might be wrong though, amazing if they still work.
The only way to make custom models is with a program called 3ds max but it requires some knowledge about programming stuff but you could probably figure it out but if you dont want to deal with that to get wow models go to this page on sc2 mapster:http://forums.sc2mapster.com/resources/art-assets/8347-wow-model-pack-requests/
Can't he use maya or blender? Aren't those both 3d modeling programs? Just wondering can you make custom portraits or is there no way to import portrait models?

How do people create custom models? I want to use WC3 models and some of my own models (ideas are in my head).
Also, WoW models. Is there a single pack with all the models in them?
Thanks all!
How do I create models then? I could probably try to recreate them all... lol
