Since warcraft 3, a few people have ideas of a MMORPG within Warcraft 3... Now that Starcraft 2 is out, i wonder if it is actually possible at all.. Factors to include:
The way blizzard hosts maps is from they're server.. So, somehow being able to link each map COULD be possible...
Banks have evolved high enough to store enough Data for many people Auctions/Guilds, etc..
Anything you'd like to add? Even an answer to my query would be nice.
And by the way, Project WarSoc was a third party tool.. It allowed Multiplayer Campaigns (Although never finished)
There is no drop-in system for sc2. The players at map launch are the only players that can ever be in that instance of the map. There's also no way to set another map as the next in a series. That is, you can't zone into deadmines in sc2.
On the other hand, you can save characters, stats and all that jazz. While you couldn't really do true timed auctions, you could make a system that is close, where the game remembers what player is trying to sell what item and lists them in some neutral trade hub, crediting the player if they are bought while removing that item from their stock list.
Guilds would be possible but likely not too useful. You could store identifiers alongside characters that would denote guilds.
The authentic mmo feel just is not possible in sc2 however. That doesn't mean you can't spice the system up though...
But I doubt that Blizzard will ever support it natively as they want to have 2 MMORPGs themselves. (WoW and unannounced one)
MM doesn't work well on a p2p base, and Blizzard wouldn't want extra costs (servers).
I don't think it would really threaten Blizzards MMORPGs because of the quality difference (read, lots of hired ppl vs a couple doing it for free), but, reasons above :>
It has been done though, and that was in Warcraft 3.. Read up Project WarSoc.. But yes, it does suck however you cannot Zone-In to other maps.. the whole fact of XX amount of maps, have to be perfectly Bank synchronized aswell...
Even if some techniques or workarounds can be used. Do you honestly think any mapper is capable of doing such a thing?, Is talented to do it?. To even make it remotely fun?. Not gonna happen.
Whether or not an MMORPG is possible is pretty much a moot point in my opinion. Now I'm not trying to say there should be a limit on how far we go with the "what ifs" when dealing with this engine as that would take all the fun out of it. What I am saying is that in venturing down this path, you're going to be working on something in such a constricting environment it wouldn't be worth it as you'd never be able to officially create one. We can argue what the "truest" definition of an MMORPG is, and what amount of immersion and player-base is needed to constitute the term "Massive" all we want, but in the end I think we can all agree that anything you create using the GE and BNet will not be an MMORPG and will ultimately end up resembling a Graphical MUD, or simply just a Multiplayer RPG. If someone is that set on creating an MMORPG, why limit yourself by using GE? Although that doesn't necessarily answer the "Is it possible?" portion, you get my drift.

Not only that, I'd go a step further and say even if the mapper was capable, the GE wouldn't be able to keep up.
Anyway, I think this user said it best. Game Over.
You could, but not in the traditional sense.

Oh what I'd give for the ability to open 'drop-ins' on some of the maps I make...ah well but a pipe dream that'd be.

Wont happen. Probbly.
@Pshyched:
No lol. Just no.

You'd have a bunch of maps that share heroes, items, and banks with simulated MMO-like features at best.
And even that would take loads of work from probably a team of dedicated mapmakers. Don't hold your breath :P.
u cant make a mmo but u can make a orpg which is kinda like a mmo i guess
