I have this idea about making an escort mission, like the one in the campaign where you protect some colonists from zerg assault.
As you can see in my fantastic sketch below, one player has a fullscreen static map OR a top-down view of the map. That player has some special abilities like bomb/airstrike, lazerbeam, reveal hidden untits, ping assault waves incoming and other things. The other player plays like normally. Some units, perhaps the Ghost have a special "laze" ability. This can be used to mark things on the map, unlocking special support weapons like nuke etc. That laze point would show up on the air-support players map. The gray stuff indicates "night vision/satellite blur"
To make something like this is plenty of work for me. Do you think it would be fun to play?
This would be a fricken amazing idea if it was done right. Sounds like a ac-120 gunship style but with 2 players, one on the ground and one is the air providing support (examples have been done but its never really been a full idea or game). I think the biggest try is really dividing the roles between the two players ie the support player must not be able to do everything himself. It would have to being something like the support weapons cause large aoe that could kill the ground player so that you can't really help against enemies too close to your ground teammate who would have to defeat any close range enemy themself. Of doing something greyscale for the support player can't find out who is on what team without the ground player. Then you would want something the the ground player having a sight range that is the same for the support player so they can remove hazard ahead of the path but not too ahead. You could also think of it as something like in a melee map that a player would try to storm/fungal an area and there would be no spell/damage but instead would pings the area with specific ammo information to the support player who would have to be the one to actually target and send the spell.
Cool cool. But do you think it should use a dialog, with a more detailed minimap and custom icons for units (dialog based) or should it be a "in-game" version (camera based)?
Do you have any examples of how this was implemented in the past?
You will at some point be using dialogs for sure, but i think you should be looking into stuff like lighting as it can add some cool effects from greyscale to the security cam style done in the campaign. I woudn't want a minimap but maybe a radar or sorts. There are also ways to create visual pings within the maps itself i believe are called alerrtping or something like that in models. Not sure what your talking about with custom icons for units. There are tons of examples maps you simple have to do an actual search to find things like this
Looks fantastic. Since the dude seems to have locked down his project (nothing to download) i guess I have to redo some stuff. But that is exactly what I want. Hm. Have to make project plan...
Ok, I have a map up on Battle.net EU server. Its called HercMerc Mission 7: assault on the controlbooth.
- Two players play.
- Player 1 is traditional HercMerc squad
- Player 2 is Gunship.
- The gunship is set to follow a Spectre that player 1 is controlling.
- If you have a ghost on your HercMercSquad, it will have radar and detection abilities.
- The vision of the gunship is blurred, bw and supposed to look like infrared. It cant see any colors, so the groundplayer will have to help out.

The iteration available on the eu server this weekend.
Yeah, sounds like you're trying to recreate the AC130K mission in MW2 (and as someone already linked, ).
And rename it to BC260 (as a reference to AC130)
AC130 = Attack Cargo, 130th Cargo Model since 1924 or something, when the first prototype was made
BC260 = Battle Cruiser, 260th Cruiser Model.
Good luck, will most definitely test it if it comes out =)
