Just a question. What makes a good "Who's the Killer" map, in your opinion? Do you like some combat elements, do you like scavenging for resources? Not much else needed for this thread so...yeah. Let's hear what you have to say.

Cool :D I'm working on top down shooter but shooting makes it hard to do as mine unit shoots when the left mouse is clicked but it has huge delay on bnet :(
1. Theme. Mafia draws heavily from this (it needs to considering its essentially just arguing and voting). You need a good theme and it needs to make sense. If I had more time I'd make a "Who's the changeling map?". You could do a lot of things with it~ you and your crew crash landed on an alien planet and a basic headcount reveals that there's one more person isn't on the ship's manifest...
2. Subtlety. How easy/difficult it is to spot/defeat the killer needs to be finely balanced. Wrongful accusations make gameplay interesting, but if it's near-impossible it will frustrate players. Random elements can add to this (OH NO, SOLAR STORM, NO MORE RADIO COMMUNICATION) but need to be fine tuned.
Lots and lots of content, and as as FullaChain said, stuff to do with that content.
Don't over-complicate it though, or players won't be able to begin without dying horribly.
And as greythepirate implied, if you can't make a decent level of immersion for the easiest type of map to make a theme for (who's the killer), then you shouldn't be making games.
Don't over-complicate it though, or players won't be able to begin without dying horribly.
I swear, every time I play mafia, I die night 1, before I can do anything. You must have put my name on some sort of "kill this guy automatically" list :D
But I agree that it needs to have something to do instead of just sitting around. I also like the idea of random events, they always spice things up.
I always have trouble thinking of things for the players to do. I mean, there's the over-used "get repair packs, and bring them to the DNA Tester" thing, which is lame. There has to be something the players can do to benefit themselves...

Look for better equipment, random hint items (the killer didn't spawn with a gauss rifle..), repairing other buildings (security camera systems, defenses for random zerg attacks), harvesting supplies to build stuff (lolminecraft)
I've never seen a random hint like that before. Might be an interesting idea. I struggle with how its going to end or progress. Players will stick together, which prevents the killer from remaining secret. It would be good to force players to separate (IE hitting two buttons far apart at the same time, something like that) to make the killer have a chance. And then there's the question of how tough to make the killer. 1-hit kills or ?
The other problem is actually getting the game to end. The players have to kill the killer. But I feel that providing a DNA tester to say "ZELDA IS THE KILLER!!!" is a bit cheap. On the other hand, players randomly killing each other for no reason is not fun either. So they still need something to go on.

its about time someone posted a thread about this... my personal favorite was parasite its the only good one and only one i ever liked... some refer to it as more advanced version of the thing (like me who hasn't played the wc3 version) theres a lot to get into... your on a station one of 2-10 people preferably (7-10 people) lol can change into a broodling. and can morph later... but its not so simple you have to keep up appearances. humans: get gene scanned they don't land station they don't kill anyone and they don't set the zoo free or kill anyone except para or tkers. aka bloodied people. humans also can get mech for 500 minerals... para instead tries to sabotage and infect all humans... sorry if im being vague theres a site on this... the game is kind of discontinued atm due to mindful's lack of interest among other things.. we had some wild games with this.
T3 cunning for instance was a real badass. As for other who the killer maps... like dark deeds and maluna ruina and mafia... no interest... sorry darkrevenantJ but more options isnt everything. if the game doesn't measure up. i could list a lot of popular games that suck right now lol... Zealot frenzy is on the list... btw.
@DrSuperEvil
Best one of those I have ever played was Parasite version sigma for WC3.

Not only text at least.
@BloodClud: Go
Mafia is great :D But I was not talking about something like that. I'm referring to maps where you actually control a unit.
@zeldarules28: Go
Well I hate mafia xd or not hate but I do not like it :( I like fast paced action! :D
@BloodClud: Go
Well yeah. That's why I am thinking about this. I think including light/medium top down shooter elements would be good.

@BloodClud: Go
Yeah, I have made several TDS engines but the lag.... Blizzard puts in all these great tools for us, but they lag too much. lol.
The combat mechanics (in my opinion) would not be too major. Probably fighting some AI creeps or something, and the occasional player.
@zeldarules28: Go
My map is all about dodging and shooting back. I wonder is it worse with 14 players :S
@BloodClud: Go
Yeah. I had several like that but I never really finished them. I have a bunch of stuff on my PC I haven't bother to finish. =/
Having something to do in between. As in not like those silly parasite maps where you just wander around and get bored.
@zeldarules28: Go
To be honest I have about 50 unfinished/frozen map projects xP
@Fullachain: Go
That's my biggest problem with the ones that are out right now...
@BloodClud: Go I counted mine while we were streaming yesterday. Since the beta, I have 145 maps in my main mapping folder :D

The Debates about who's the killer is what makes it fun :) (the social element).
@RodrigoAlves: Go
Agreed. They are always more of a social game. But it should still have stuff to do. Otherwise it's a chatroom.
