Dune: Evolution is an ambitious non-commercial project with professional approach, made by the [ADVENTURERS] team. Dune: Evolution is a project that aims to create a modification, or, to be more precise, a total conversion, an attempt to recreate Frank Herbert’s universe within the boundaries of the RTS genre, as close as possible.
The reason why we post this here is quite simple – we want to find people who can be interested in our project, who can join our team of developer-enthusiasts, who have enough skills to work with Map (galaxy) Editor to make a mod (a total conversion) Dune:Evolution based on Starcraft 2.
The project exists for a while, now our team has artists, 3D-modellers, animators, composers, etc. We have already done much, the campaign scenario is almost finished, we have designed the game mechanics, we have much graphic materials (concept arts, drawings, stories) to create the necessary atmosphere and to maintain it, we have unit lists and tech trees, most units and buildings are ready and the rest will follow soon.
Dune:Evolution has already gathered many people who await its release, and it gathers a large audience during public updates. People who have seen our works have mostly positive comments, and their only complaint is that the project was delayed for a bit, while they want to see it released and to try it out.
There is a delay, indeed, and it is caused by the fact that there are a few games that can implement all the features we want. C&C3: TW, which was planned to be used in the beginning, turned out to be very limited and is very difficult to modify, some things are even impossible to implement at all. We still struggle against all the difficulties, we still make the mod using C&C3:TW, slowly but steadily, yet at the same time we look at other games.
The music in this video was created specifically for the project.
By Loren Sieghart (hologard), our composer.
With the release of SC2 we noticed that many people say it is a good platform for modding and different mini-games. Of course, we want to try it, this is the reason why we ask your assistance. If SC2 turns out to be better (and it is quite probable) then we will be able to move our mod completely to it, if a good specialist joins our ranks.
Test: Some of our models that were imported into the sc2. Textures are not yet fully configured.
Don’t miss the opportunity to work on a large and interesting project in a multinational team. Your name will appear in the developers list and, who knows, maybe it can become a good starting point for you.
Besides, if you have your own project which requires its own arts, models, textures, animation, etc, we can help you, and you can work on your project along with ours.
Check these link to see what our team members can do:
http://www.evodune.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=105&p=612#p612
Both sides would benefit from such cooperation.
Those who wish to join are required to:
know Map (galaxy) Editor (compiling the mod, setting the properties of units/buildings/objects, user interface, effects, etc.);
*It is not necessary to know all this at once, several people may join and work on different aspects of the mod *
have interest in the project, the desire to work and improve;
be able to give at least several hours a week to the project;
stay working and not to disappear for a long time without any explanations;
prevent any leaks of information so it would not spread chaotically, but would be presented in a decent way through public updates;
know English well enough, at least for forum discussions;
We will prefer people who speak Russian as well, but it is not crucial, but the fact is that the majority of the team are Russian-speaking, but everybody understands English – but not everybody can speak it quickly and fluently enough without any mistakes.
That’s all, thanks for your kind attention, we will be looking forward to your response.
Those who are interested can apply here on the forum, or on the official forum of the project, or by PM, or by email: [email protected], [email protected]
I currently have a lot on my plate with college finals however in the future I would be willing to help if you would like a concept artist design etc. I have read every book in the dune series and so has my compatriot who is working on my level, who may also be up for the task of working with you guys.
however in the future I would be willing to help if you would like a concept artist design etc. I have read every book in the dune series and so has my compatriot who is working on my level, who may also be up for the task of working with you guys.
It will be very nice. Feel free to contact with me when you and your friends will be ready.
Looks interesting, I love DUNE. Are you guys planning a campainge covering all the books?
Dune: Evolution is close to the books, but still it doesn’t suggest the players to replay the whole Dune story, there will be an opportunity to make a fresher storyline based on the events from the book. We are not rewriting the creation of Frank Herbert, we just allow an alternative history which is still governed by Dune universe.
The events of the game take place between the first and the second books from the original Dune series and describe what happened to the army of House Harkonnen after the death of baron Vladimir and his nephews, and what path was chosen by the newly created alliance of House Atreides and the free people of Arrakis, also known as the Fremen.
When we start this project we were thinking about that.
Butlerian Jihad is a really interesting piece to work with, and possibly, if everything goes well, and our project will show itself well, then in the future we will implement Butlerian Jihad too.
Ok. Maybe no one here interested in the Dune: Evolution, i can live with that. But I do not believe that nobody here wants any custom models with unique texture and professional animation. We can make it for you.
If you don`t like Dune: Evolution and you don`t want to work like a member of the team then we can work together like a partners.
Alot of people on here are already heavily invested in thier own projects. Or are waiting to see what blizz does in future patches expansions. Is there anything in particular that your group is looking for?

Your demo video kinda tells me you guys look to have most of the project under control.
The video that we showed had been recorded from a completely different game - Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
And we have too many problems with that game. Pretty much we just can not realized, and we have to abandon many of the ideas. Thats why we want to try to work with the SC2. And in case of success we will be able to move our mod completely to SC2.
But you havent mentioned exactly what your team needs?
For example we want to make a squad-based combat system like in or . So, first of all, we want to know is possible or not.
And we need someone who can do it, or at least be able to help us advice.
Another example: Suppose we want to make a unique user interface. And we want to know whether there are any restrictions that we can do and what we can not do.
And we need someone who can do it, or at least be able to help us advice.
And so on and so on... In general, if simplify, we need people who understand how to work with the SC2-editor and can help us realize our ideas. Because we're newbie to working with this game.
Not so sure about the squad based combat system. You can set a group of units as a "control group", and but there isnt any specfic AI for these control groups. You could handle most AI type stuff through triggers though if you want the units to respond or behave in a specific manner.
You can make a Unique User interface, I would suggest sticking with the default UI possibly set as terran for all players. The reason for this is that the abiliy button hot keys currently require the UI to be active. You could use triggers for all your hot keys but this would be pretty complicated if you want different hot key abilities on all your units.
I would suggest you make up a list of what your currently unsure about in SC2 editor and let people on here point you in the right direction.

Dune: Evolution is an ambitious non-commercial project with professional approach, made by the [ADVENTURERS] team.
Sorry to have to say that (I think I'm not going to make friends today...), but I know a LOT of amateur teams claiming they have a "professional approach", and ending up with their project abandoned because they realize it's too much work. I don't wish the same for your project (I love Dune, even though I only have seen the movie, played the videogames, and never read the books), but I don't want you to believe (or make US believe) you're on the same level as professionals. You're only amateurs until you actually worked in the video games industry. Most amateurs don't even have a clue of where they're going and how the industry works (I heard soooo many people say they were able to do a game on their own, and in the end it was some awful thing without any sort of gameplay nor any interest... just because they didn't know creating a game requires to follow RULES). As for any kind of job, it may seem easy because it's fun, but not everybody is able to do it. I'm in the video games industry and I will never claim I could do a movie alone if I wanted to. Nor will I claim to be a programmer, or an artist. It's not my job and there are probably tons of things implied I never thought of.
Well, enough digression for now.
Anyway, I wish to see your project released one day. Really, I'd love to play it. But as SoulCarveRR said, most people here are already spending time on their own projects (mostly alone) so it will not be easy to get someone to help you... I'm on a project already, the next one is on its way, and I'm already planning the third. It seems you're already far more than enough in your team to do something really cool (we once made a complete Wii game with a team of 5 guys), so I hope you'll keep your interest in the SC2 Editor to actually learn how it works. There are plenty of topics here that will help, just don't give up if you ever feel like the task is too hard for you. It's not easy, but it's really worth it. Good luck!
"Do not be afraid to try, just remember: The ark was built by amateurs, but professionals built the Titanic"
Of course it is only a joke. But every joke has some truth. Being a professional does not always mean to be better then amateur. Being an amateur does not mean that you can`t do anything worthwhile.
And I have to say that any type of professionals at one time in the beginning were amateurs.
Sorry to have to say that (I think I'm not going to make friends today...)
You don`t have to be sorry, coz I agree with you, we are not professionals we just try to do what we do with maximum quality what we can. I guess professionals do the same, and thats what I mean when I say "with professional approach". =)
And we know is hard to make a good mod (total conversion), and it is very hard to make a good game. Dune: Evolution project has existed for over two years, we know what is hopelessness, and how to overcome it, we know how difficult it is to start from beginning when we realize that we have reached an impasse, we understand that all is not as simple as it seemed in the beginning. We're not sure that we're doing everything right, we can only guess about the correct algorithm. But we also can learn from our mistakes, and for all the development time we've done a lot of them. =) So i can say that for now we realize (more or less) what we are doing. At least i hope so.
Anyway, I wish to see your project released one day. Really, I'd love to play it...
...just don't give up if you ever feel like the task is too hard for you. It's not easy, but it's really worth it. Good luck!
Glad you guys have decided to switch to Starcraft 2. If you're serious about it though, I'd highly suggest you kill the C&C3 version and focus on the SC2 one entirely...with a project of your scope it is extremely difficult to finish a release for 1 engine, let alone 2. Keep in mind that the final 5-10% of any project will take much much more time than you could ever expect. Hell, for Mideast Crisis 2...it took us 6-8 months to polish our 2 faction beta into something we could release. Then we spent another 6-8 just polishing and iterating it more for the 2nd release...and tbh we could still have spent more time polishing.
I'd also suggest you guys rethink the resource system since switching to SC2 offers more options. I'd love to see a Dune RTS that used; spice, money and water as its 3 core resources. The interaction of the three is what makes it interesting, using spice for fremen-type units or selling it for money, using money to buy units, all units requiring water when built (but also is harvestable from fallen units)...and so on.
Either way, I can't wait to play a version of it (on either engine). Best of luck!
Hi Deve. I'm just writing to say that I think your project looks great. Sorry, I can't help. I'm working on my own project at the moment, and I'm unfamiliar with Dune. However, I'd like to wish you good luck. There's nothing wrong with trying to make a high quality game!
hey there i mess around with the data editor to do abilities nothing else really. i would help out because i have run out of things to do in the editor (except make a map). although i have not read the "dune" books but give me a concept what the ability does and some buttons, textures, models. etc. ill throw it together and you will have the ability.if you do not want me im fine this would just be something to do instead of extra sleep.pm me
Wow, I loved all Dune games and all of its books and Dune (the original) was the best film ever.

I can help with Triggering or Data editor, I have my own RTS project: http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/warring-factions/, so we may encounter with the same problems.
For example: I already tried to implement once a squad-based combat system to my map and I gave up on it as I couldnt find a really good method to move the units together. (It might would work out perfectly if I would try it to make it again, but I realized that my map not really needs it)

Well. I guess I have no choice, it remains only to study and ask questions and hope for help.
Then the first question (the simple one):
Maybe some one know how to create moving treads animation for tanks (example: Siege Tank). Is this texture animations? How exactly to do this for SC2?
Glad you guys have decided to switch to Starcraft 2.
