Alot of these ideas sound like you guys are smoking pot, lol. "dreams, dancing trees, etc." Anyway, the loling stopped, I do seem to get inspiration right when I am tired or relaxed. Thing is, I sleep so hard I forget the thoughts. Maybe I should get a pencil and paper next to my bed? Idk just thinking about it. There are some ideas that I simply can not do yet, an example is any 3d modeling as I have no money to buy 3ds max. Other ideas are out of my league just yet, think zealot frenzy, marine arena. I think I would be decent at cameras and cinematics (basic trigger/camera knoledge). But then again, you can't make a senerio with smoke and mirrors. Iam stuck based on my limmited understanding of what the editor can actually do. This impares my thinking to what I have already learned. I am interested in making multiple features and intertwining them into a single map. Many of the things I want to try, changing penetrator round to kill units with burn animation) I just don't know how to impliment them practically into a working (and fun) game. It seems that all of my little seperate ideas just aren't coming together... I can change units around all day long but not without some reasonable goal in mind for all the work I put into it. I guess what I wan to know is how you combine little, seperate ideas into a single, complete senerio. Terrain as an example: I have thought of mountain ranges, caves, underground lava pools, castles, nuclear winter, and more but I am not sure how to combine them into a single map that is actually really fun to play! All of the maps I have tried so far are too square and very, very bland and uninteresting. Same goes for working triggers and senerios.
If you think of terrains, the simplest thing to do from there is add 2 starting locations (or more), a bunch of minerals patches and geysers and start editing terrain to make it balanced, and you got a melee map :)
If youre having trouble with simply not understanding the editor, just go and learn the stuff. Changing penetrator rounds to cause the fire death animation is the simplest thing ever. Find it's damage effect, and under the field "Death type" pick "Fire".
When you get an idea, write it down, pick what would be the keywords, write those into the mapster search, press enter. Learn how to do. if it includes things you don't know how to do, search for those. Keep going till you're done.
And i know how it is, getting ideas before sleep or something... I sometimes make funny comics, i got like 14 or 15 of em at the moment, but i could have at least 50 but i keep forgetting my ideas cause i go to sleep or simply am nowhere near my computer or pen and paper >.>
And, if you can't think of anything to do, this is an easy way i get ideas:
Listen to music. I don't know whether it works with all music genres, but rock/punk rock/metal works in my experience, but also a lot of "quiter" stuff than that. While you're listening, think it is the soundtrack for a movie scene and start thinking how that scene would look. Maybe it's an epic fight scene, or some guy running away from masses of explosions, or w/e your music sounds like. Then, pick a part of that and turn it into sc2 stuff (In my case, i actually write stories as a hobby and a lot of key events and characters in those stories can be blamed on certain songs)
It's the easiest way of getting ideas, listen to something and turn it a movie. You can also try and play games or watch actual movies, rip ideas off and combine them into something else.
EDIT: lol, didnt see there was a first page to this topic xD ah well, lets hope i didnt get anything wrong.
It sounds like its more a case of you lacking enough determination for making your ideas work, because thats what mapping is entirely about. Pure determination. Inspired ideas are a by-product of that. Where there's a will.....
You want to make it happen but you simply lack the resolve. In which case, nothing will really end up helping you.
p.s Format your posts too. No one likes a wall of text;P.
I would have but my keyboard was acting up. If you have ever tried to type and the word next to the word you are typing gets erased, you know what I mean. BTW: you sound mean and synical, no offense.
Look, I am only 16. I have big ideas that I would like to do, and I would do them. I am not naturally good at scripting or understanding actions. Have you ever had an idea that when you search for ways to help you, you realize how pathetic your idea was compared to what you are finding?? This happens to me ALL THE TIME. I find someone else's work in the act of searching for how to do mine and I realize how dumb and weak my thoughts were because their ideas blow mine away.
I bet this never happened to you from the sounds of how you responded... I only found the editor about 3 weeks ago and haven't had that much time with it so far, before that it was just a rumor to me, not even real.
This is my first game editor that I got serous about. I have never played WC, WOW, SC1 or SC: BW. I am an absolute beginner and I have no clue how to understand anything. Only 2 days ago did I learn you COULD copy/paste terrain.
I do not just use the editor. I also want to play the game and not be a noob. Splitting the time is hard to do but I want to do both play and make. I also care about my grades in school. Therefore, I don't really have much time for anything other than SC2 and homework.
This site is way more "moderator" and "author" friendly then it is "regular shmoe" friendly... I do not do this for a living nor would I want to. I am meerly here to try and pick up a few things. If you can't help me, then I hope someone or something can.
perhaps the word inspiration does not have the intended effect I want to ask. How do you get ideas and turn them into fun and playable solutions. My creativity is blocked (I am no good at getting new ideas).
None taken. Im sorry, if I came across as sounding "mean". Being a Wraith, Im devoid of emotion and thus seeing me sugar-coat my words is beyond rare.
So, ok. You`re 16. Absolute beginner at the Sc2 editor and ...editing in general.
And, You want to know how to find inspiration?
I have a hard time answering this because its a really open-ended question.
-What you need to do is plan. Plan what you want, what you want you`re map to be like etc etc.
-Then step by step work towards that goal. If you cant do a certain something, ask for help/assistance, Form a team, Do something.
-Along the way, change/improve ideas as you see fit. This is called iterations/revisions. Ive only done it about a thousand times thus far on a map Im working on;p. And your first few maps will definitely be kinda crap. Thats just how it goes. Improvements usually ensue.
Like I said before. Determination has to drive you. You cant rely on waiting for this "inspirational" force to appear and trigger you into motion. It will happen when you actively seek it. To be inspired, You must first WANT to be inspired. The rest will follow naturally. We are all inspired in different ways by different things.
So yes, Ultimately, Just keep at it. If you fail, Keep at it. If you fail again, keep at it. Thats how it goes;p.
Most importantly is that you try to have fun while doing so;p
Inspiration/ ideas comes to me when I cant sleep at night for several hours,(your mind starts to think about random stuff in your day) some of them i forget after i woke up though
Music: Listen to music you like, and imagine what gameplay would be like with that music. Don't go too overboard, you're probably not going to make something as cool as what's in your brain. I have never actually come up with new ideas from doing this, but it gets the brain juices moving.
Start with what you know: Look at the games, particularly SC2 games, and see what you like about them. Try to make your own thing, but better. Find specific ways to improve on the game and add your own twist. Believe me, the games out there right now have a lot of room for improvement.
If you don't have an idea for an overall game, start small. Decide on some very specific gameplay elements and work around it. Keep thinking of new components of gameplay and maybe you'll eventually tie it all together with a cohesive game.
So many b.net games have stupid names like "Marine Platform Wars" or something. For my current project, I first came up with a name that sounded appealing and made the entire game around the title.
I'd also say that at your age, you are going to have trouble putting together a really complete game. I started in SC1 around your age, I made a simple single player map called "Escape from Alcatraz" and finished less than half of it and never released it. As I had more time and more ideas my projects became more complete. I never really had much time to work on custom games until after I graduated from college. Once you're at that point, life really becomes repetitive and you need something to fill up your weeknights.
Wow, dancing trees from smoking weed? Wot kind of weed r u talking about, i sure do want some of that!
My tips are:
1. Do not masturbate! It will tire u out and demotivate your creativity.
2. Stop doing weed if you see dancing trees, as you are probably so stoned, you dont even know what ur smoking.
3. Do not make map if ur motivated by a movie or a game. Ur motivation will drop quickly as soon as ur memory begins to fade. And i bet its already pretty short from all the smoking

Most of my inspiration is being able to play the idea. The idea comes from different past experiences like movies, books, games, dreams, etc.
