Okay, So I'm on a shared network. And theres some selfish f*ck torrenting despite everyone else not doing it. Frankly I'm sick and tired of it, it prevents everyone else from using the net properly because my connection isn't that great, upgrading the package isn't an option either.
What I want to do is block or throttle him. I would be really grateful of someone with some network expertise could advise me on how I can do this, or even deny him from getting an IP in the first place so he can't use the network.
If this info helps, my router model is DL605e, I've tried setting QOS, I've tried using P2POver to throttle him but NONE of it works and it's really pissing me off.
Additional notes: Diplomacy wont work when the dick doesn't open his door when you knock on it.
you could try blacklisting the torrent trackers which he uses in the router.
just set it up in the 'filters' section.
this will only annoy him a little bit, because he can go find another tracker, but it still tells him that 'your onto him' =).
what branch is the router?
searching for that model name didnt return any results, and i couldnt see it on the D-Link or Netgear websites.
-
another option is, some fancy routers (business class usually ) allow for bandwidth splitting or allocation.
so you could specify how much bandwidth each user can get.
so if u have a 1.5Mb connection, and 3 ppl in your house, you can give each person 0.5Mb of bandwidth.
ive heard about this, and googled it...but u need a fancy router to do it, or a Linux box acting as a router.
anyway, good luck sorting out that dick...maybe unplug the hippy from the router when u want to game.
Why dont you just block his internet completely?....
I mean this is what I would do....
My internet is lagging
If possible check bandwidth usage on router
If its jack ass then disconnect him
block his Ip from router (requires him to have a static network IP)
if hes on dhcp network then disable Dhcp networking and set up staic IPs for you and your roommates you want to have access to it.
Tell him hes a dirty fucker that isnt gonna get his internets back unless he slows his torrets. Not to mention the legal aspects to him dling so much torrented kiddie porn, and how it could effect you.
oh and make sure you change the password for the router so he cant adjust it
You could also attempt to block the ports his bit torrent uses.... this may possibly fail to work...... I have no idea what ports bit torrent generally uses
My bad, typo, its a DSL605E, Aztech. Pretty ancient, I got it back in '07. We've tried unplugging before. Dire consequences, he pulled my plug when I was in mid game and I got DC-ed. *RAGE* Do you have any experience with wireshark? I'm not too good at analyzing packet information, but if I could block off his trackers that might help a bit. It would be a more assertive fix as to what I actually did, which brings me to..
This is exactly what i did, skip out step 6 :P The modem belongs to me even though its not my house, cos the landlord's modem spoiled and he wasn't willing to replace it.. So i had to step up and use my spare. Fortunately this brings the advantage that I have access to the routers settings.
Update: Sigh.. the idiot just restarted the modem. Which is the main reason why this isn't a good fix. As long as he has no internets, he will restart it periodically thinking it will help. -_- Thus, blocking trackers at this point would be the preferred solution.
Note: I actually did try block all ports except http (80) last time. Somehow his torrent was still flooding the bandwidth.
Update 2: Ok shit.. apparently when you reset the modem, it nullifies/removes the IP block.
Tried implies you failed right? QoS should be your solution, other than preventing him from using internet completely..
I've had friends with this problem, they just moved the hell away from a person like that. If he never opens the door or attempts to communicate, you dunno if hes gonna just kill you one day in your sleep... lol
You said "we", so you can just get a unanimous decision with your other housemates to kick the person out, especially if they continue to be this unreasonable. Have you ever tried asking him/her to limit DL/UL speed? Like cap download at 1/2-1/3 of the max download speed, and have less than 4KB/s upload.

Also how is your components connected? Where is the router/modem/pcs with respect to each other? If the modem comes out of your room, you can stick another router inside your room as your actual DHCP and QoS management, and then disable those on your old router. He won't know for sure if you set any limits or blocks on him, and no matter how many times he resets the old router, it won't do anything.
But of course none of this prevents him from finding a way into your room and doing wutever he needs to do... the best solution if hes that annoying in every way, is to get him to leave or leave yourself...
Yeah, But theres a chance QOS failed because I don't really understand its inner workings and thus it wasn't set up correctly. Moving ain't an option for me, and kicking him out isn't an option either because the landlord is the 'modem' whilst we, the tenants are the clients that he leases the 'IP's' to.
My housemate who knows the fella just spoke to him I think, since they actually know each other. Just used P2Pover to check, it looks like he's capped it at about 15 kbps right now, so it's not so bad. He might have scheduled it to go full power after midnight though. Have to wait n see.

The modem is the router. Its connected to a 16 port switch, then to our pc's. It's outside my room in an open area accessible to everyone, wires are all nailed to the wall.
I don't mind giving QOS a try again, I don't think I got it right the first time after all. Plus, If i'm not mistaken, similar to before, a modem restart actually resets all my router settings to default. Once in awhile when we're having net troubles, someone may just randomly reset the modem without notice, removing the settings without me knowing.
Know any good tutorials on how to setup QOS for a Aztech DSL605E? The manual is all jargand to me I swear..
Honestly I would probably get physically violent as soon as he hits that reset button. There would be blood if he didnt wise up.
Why do you allow him to walk into your room and reset the router with out even asking?
I think the answer is grow some balls.
You can adjust how much bandwidth bit torrent can use any where for 1kps uplaoding and 1kps downloading. Or your internets are complete garbage.
With his computer off you should go test the internet a bit.
My internets ARE complete garbage, I stated in the OP.

Get your facts straight before you openly attack people yes?
I ain't that big sized either. Picking a fight is against my advantage. I prefer to fight my wars with brains rather than brawn.
Well your brain should have told you that you should move the modem/router into your room by now....
Theres no other way to stop him from just walking up and reseting the thing to its default settings. If your brains are such and advantage you should realize this. With out the router/modem being physically protected from tampering, any attempt to interfere with a roommates internets are bound to end in disaster.
Sorry if that sounds so negative.
Well you dont really tell us what your dl speeds are.... you could also be getting heavy packet loss...... may have nothing to do with your room mates torrenting.
Possibly call your ISP to have them come check the line. Unless your on dial up you should have pretty stable connections even with people torrenting. Unless hes throttling out your network. But I am assuming you already know its because of him. So thats why I would become hostile to him, because if he isnt aware of what hes doing I would make him aware.
Well your brain should have told you that you should move the modem/router into your room by now....
Uh.. Not to be sarcastic, But:
Wires are nailed to the wall :/

Repetition add's emphasis.

No worries, I don't take any offense.
Here is the stats according to the modem.
Downstream / Upstream (Kbps) 1536/512
But yeah, In the country I currently reside, Connections are very emotional. Sometimes they're all Speedy Gonzales, at other times its just slow and unbearable. The ISP is owned by the government and they pretty much have a monopoly. So they don't give a rats ass about customer complaints. They know the customer has no other alternative. So yeah, its pretty messed up.

Sounds like a great guy to live with.
Being bored is not an excuse for posting idiotic replies. Keep that in mind.

Networking isn`t my strong point but I`ll try to figure something out and get back to you!.
I use a program called netlimiter on our home network. Only problem with that is it requires you to install the software on the pc in question :/
