Yeah, I was trolling about Portal being a tech demo. That's how I react when something keeps popping up everywhere I go (hello reddit). Never played the first one and have no intention on trying. Never liked Valve games.
I do in fact consider HL2 a huge tech-demo of Source (just like all the "cry" games by Crytek are tech-demos of CryEngine). Ever since it was announced it was all about the engine. The first screenshots of that pier (ooh, pretty shiny water). How I could shoot out some support beams and barrels would roll out, (anyone remember that one? Took me longer to find it than to write this post :P). Even the grav-gun was a demo of the physics engine. And.. well... HL2 is just a FPS, the most base genre in existence, like a TD. You can only work up from there (well, not with a TD, they're just that auwful). Pure FPS were fun pre-1999, and only when they acknowledged that their only goal was to shoot people (Quake, Unreal).
Good FPS example: Deus Ex, an FPS, but so much more.

ummm at the time they released hl2.. it was amazing for what it was.. it just seems like your saying it was a fail tech demo... 1) it was amazing in that sense, and two.. it was the squeal to one of the best fps out there, half-life.
and.. I think you should play portal.. before going off on your thoughts about it rofl.

I just got it. Played it for a bit, mostly the co-op. Definitely the same good gameplay with a facelift. And I appreciate the fact that now theres story instead of just puzzle after puzzle. Who wants to make portal 2 in sc2 editor? :D
I've delved into the source engine for a bit... let's just say there's a good reason I'm here and not on valve forums. Galaxy editor = user friendly in comparison, but alas bogged by limitations/bnet. Still, much easier to get assets and an audience and to get something done.
Play a game before you judge it. It's cover may look gay to you, that does not judge how the game plays. Your missing out on a lot, and trashing it at the same time. HL2 was not a tech demo btw, nor should it be considered as one. It was a sequel to the first Half Life, was that a tech demo too? What about the L4D series? Were those just tech demos? TF2? Was that a tech demo?
Valve has worked on there engine over the years. Some companies write new engines for new games and others use the same. There is options for both paths in using the same engine or creating a new one. Using the same might limit you a tad bit because your delving into already written code while writing a new engine gives you the advantage of limitless ideas.
In Valve's case most of their games that they have created use a great engine. It might be old, but its modified to fit today's times. Not every game is going to offer you Starcraft II 3D Extreme graphics. Black Ops graphics was pretty bad, but still millions bought it. Btw, the engine was never rewritten for Call of Duty since Call of Duty 4, why are you not raging about them? I realize we are talking about Valve in this thread, but why are you going to target one company with a old engine instead of other who are barely even modifying there engine except to fit different features in their game.
The Starcraft II engine won't be rewritten for the series that they are going to offer. Is that rage worthy? No, they spent a lot of time working on the engine for Starcraft II and it is outstanding. Valve spent time working on the engine for the Portal and Half Life series too, should that all just be thrown away when they have so many options before them? Why change what wasn't broken? There comes a time when one needs to write a new engine but for right now it did not need to be rewritten.
They are not trying to compete with Battlefield 3 or Cataclysm or even Starcraft II. If they were it would be rage worthy to talk about the engine. But right now it isn't.
Valve does amazing games and most all of them have sold outstandingly well. There quality isn't as good as Blizzards but they do know how to make good games.

the word on the grape vine is that the new editor for portal 2 will be a great dealer more friendly (and the source editor is very user friendly compared to other "real" editors [aka not just "specific game editors"]

Word on the street has it that Portal 2 made me bake a cake and that it is delicious. And that for some reason I tried to grab inside the fridge from my desk, thinking there was a Portal right here.
I just beat it. I gotta say, that was infinitely better than the original. There was actually a story, it had lots of different areas, and there was a change of pace every so often. Plus the ending was great :D
Didn't like that they made it so linear, there was more thinking in Portal 1.
ummm no.....? they had the same type of test champers in 1 and 2... yet 2 had the "outside" worlds a lot more and bigger than 1.. think you have that backwards =P

Yeah... both were linear... Move forward. But portal 1 was move forward through 19 test chambers. Portal 2 was try to escape, do a little testing, kill GLaDOS, run around in the ruined bottom of the lab, do some more testing but in a new area, go back and find weatley, do some more testing, and then beat him. It had a change in appearance every so often. Unless I'm missing something, both of them gave you no freedom whatsoever.
What are you talking about? They didn't change the ending. Didn't you hear the voice at the end of Portal 1 say "thank you for assuming the party associate position" and drag you away... presumably back to your cell.
That IS the changed ending. The original ending just had you on the ground outside and faded to black. They patched in the voice and the dragging away for their portal 2 announcement ARG
Yeah I lol'ed when they changed the ending. Some guy must have been like ' oh wait guys....none of this story for p2 makes any sense because you escaped....quick lets patch the old game but do it secretly!'
LOL

nooooooo you have choices.. when your running first time away from glados, you can pick to go back to here, THUS not linear there! also "this is the part where he kills you", at the part where he kills you, if you Liston to him and go back... something different happens [until you die] ... thats not linear... there only a few seconds of non-linear ness, but thats a few seconds more than portal 1 thus still proving my point =P

i dont' care about how user friendly it is, its just BETTER.
All galaxy does right is give you a huge library of art/resources to use. The editor itself is crap, the limitations and hacking you have to do to get things to work outside of the normal engine's capabilities just makes galaxy a lackluster "game maker". To that effect it is nice and it aggregates all of our projects into one awfully designed list system.

Great game.
Speaking of real game engines that don't suck, anyone wanna use SOURCE?
