Well, i'm 15 (almost 16), but you would never know it. I am a very good triggerer and decent data editor. Terrible at terraining though. Not only that, but am a respected member of SC2Mapster (at least I think so xD). I also know Python and C and have messed around with Galaxy, Lua, C# and BASIC. Who says teenagers can't mod :)?
Personally, I got into modding during RA3. Man, were those tools bad. To even get a minimap working you had to screenshot, edit, save as a little used Targa file, import manually into your map and fiddle around a bit. Maps were not mods, and only used default units which meant maps broke after each patch (usually), and triggers were really basic if I remember correctly. Actual modding required .XML files and couldn't be easily used in a custom map. Luckily the GE is a lot better than that :D.
Well I think im a pretty decent modder at the age of 14. I have made one publish map for SC2 just to learn everything ( Risk Revulsion ) and I'm currently making a few projects and quite a few more projects in Mind :P
@EternalWraith: Go Stop making people think I'm a Grandpa, I'm only 82. I'm at the peak of my youth. And the peak of being a grumpy old man that threatens everyone with a shotgun.
For the record: I started with 11. Been doing it since, made it my job.
The fact that younger people can do great stuff sometimes comes from a few different aspects, including the fact that they actually got more time to do things and it's easier to learn the younger you are. But what they lack is experience and basic knowledge about game theory. They also lack knowledge in terms of customer needs and stuff. They just do things they enjoy themselves, not projects that will broaden their audience. They also lack any sense for things that are way over their head. You do not try to make your own Mass Effect, when it had a team of over 120 people working 3 years straight! ... !!!!!!
So, to sum this up...
Young Folks:
+ Time
+ Easy Learning
+ Better Tools
- Experience
- Knowledge
- Get in way over their head.
Slightly Older Folks:
+ Better Tools
+ Experience
+ Knowledge
+ Not so much in over their heads
+- Time
+- Learning
Grandpa Folks:
+ Experience
+ Knowledge
+ Knowing what they get themselves into (does not apply to marriage)
+ Better Tools
+- Learning
- Time
Also, to clear things up, I'm 22. But I'm still better then you are. Period.
I started mapping when I was 12. The first great stuff didn't come out until I was 19. When I was 24 I got in the industry. That said, I thzink you can start mapping/modding the same age you start playing games. You do it just for the fun of it anyway.
Gorandor, I think Grandpa folks have lots of time.
it's at least gutsy to advertise one's youth, because "older" people (whatever they say) will usually look "down" on younger people
i see great interest in what most "older" people have responded (i must admit that originally, the thread's name made it "immature", but maybe it's called for) so i'll continue on the same route:
i'm 36 and as far as i can remember, i have always loved mapmaking (something about creating with abstract tools and the power you get from it..mmm)
i started with load runner, got fewer and fewer lapses of time for mapmaking over the passing of years, sc1 ...age of empires ..when it got to warcraft 3, it was too late, girls, studies or parties, getting money for travels, art's supplies and more girls left no more place for it...
recently i got back into it, thinking my kid would benefit from "a game to end all games" ; i felt sc2's galaxy could produce ANY game my kid would like till he was 10 or so...and that my childhood "adapted" boardgames would have to be video games for him and that i'd much prefer he made them instead of "just" buying them...
more on topic, i think kids have it all (but beware cause it's always the case, so soon you will be like us, older and not as much passionate or reckless (in a good way :) ), so pray do take good care in making sure u make the most of it... i did.
i'll add that being inexperienced is often useful to do new stuff (for one u do not feel limits or obstacles as much when u have not encountered them yet), there is no sense of time (usually young people feel time goes dully slow and old feel it's frenetically slipping from their grasp)... and to be quite blunt: u got loads of time, we old farts fight tooth and nails to get 4 free hours a week...
on the times: i totally agree that sc2 > sc1 as far as potential goes... so again make the most of it
to finish, all this does not mean that old people hate young people, but they will not go down without a fight either (meaning they will always play the age = maturity card or at least use their "experience" (and that's the thing experience can only be gained through time), .. this has been going on since the caverns... so all old people have suffered it when they were young...
ohhh forgot my silly joke, you're under age to play the game you're modding... :)
@ Gorandor: marriage is applicable, just crazy... try having kids
Also, to clear things up, I'm 22. But I'm still better then you are. Period.
Word. :D
I started with Warcraft III. I discovered the editor a short while after I bought The Frozen Throne, I think.
Since I had no internet yet, I learned everything myself. I can still remember how happy I was when I started messing with items and item charges. I tried making ammo clips for a pistol and it immediately worked as intended :D
Only after that I tried out the WcII and Sc1 editors.
In retrospect I think I should have started modding and programming much earlier. I'm basically learning something new everyday, but I'm basically not learning fast enough to realize my goals :D
Every time i told someone my age (someone who didnt know me in RL), they were surprised, lol. Apart from mapping i also organise sc2 tournaments, i lead (past tense) alliances in browser games, set up a forum and... Well, i'm pretty sure there was at least one more thing. I'm 16. I can say i started mapping sc2 with 15 since the beta editor came out shortly before my birthday xD Dabbled in wc3, nothing impressive though. I'm pretty sure i also messed around with the age of empires editor back in like 3rd grade, and i also once tried to mod Oblivion, but i followed a tutorial as closely as possible and half of my self made room was at the completely wrong location (even though the editor showed the halves side by side, there was about a ten meter gap between them in game). I wanted to open up the tutorial again the next day, but for some reason never did it (i still sometimes feel like going back...)
My biggest problem atm is my comp and RL situation (dont wanna go into details about that). If i had a better comp, i could continue casting sc2 matches and would get a lot more tournaments going (The current tournament is missing a finalist, and *someone* still didnt send his 3rd place match replays *shoots EW an evil look*, so not even a friend of mine can cast his half of the games...)
I guess people dont expect younger people to be good modders because of how majority of people my age are... And i wouldn't trust anyone in my class apart from one person to actually be able to mod, and that one exception worries too much about school to consider it. But most of the people here on mapster under 18 that stick to this site have proven to be a rare case like me that's just as good as anyone else :p
also, @Laertes, i have a message for you concerning your profile pic:
.*deep breath*
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Just turned 17, and first experience with modding anything was last year in may during the beta. I tried multiple times to use the WC3 editor but always just said "its too confusing" but I just had no initiative, and wow, i really wish I put more effort into starting earlier, ever since I started using the sc2 editor I've been having loads of fun mapping.
Your age does surprise me;p. You handle yourself with a good sense of maturity and professionalism, So I thought you were a bit older.
Oh and my opponent for the tournament never shows up!. I dont know what happened to him. Will still try to get in contact. Sorry about that though:/.
@LinkD
Wow o.0. You are extremely talented for your age!. Your Rpg is definitely the best I have seen thus far. Amazing stuff!!.
@Wolfisk
Like the others, Impressive work-background you have there;p
@houndofbaskerville: Go I'd rather not have kids. Imagine they're female. My evil genius, combined with the natural deception talent of women. And good looks. I'd create the worst nightmare for any man... Tempting!
my wife took care of the credit.. and mostly everything else.. sob.. gotta go she says i should be in bed already...
aren't we off topic... uhh...: (yelling) old farts fight against youth power... uhhh sounds awful...
anyway, i love kids, my favourite was my grandpa... he managed to play all through his life... not everyone manages it, nice to see sc2m houses some people well on their way... age means stuff, but as long as there's a will...
@houndofbaskerville: Go Uhhhh... yeah! Suck it Blue! I mean younger folks! We old farts will always be better. Even if you reach the age we have now, we still will be better! *puts his teeth away and goes to sleep*
@Gorandor: told you the train was off the tracks...
@grenegg: i'd be delighted, i love the idea, the "old mod", he said stop, but don't that let stop you, YOU are young and restless, just be delicate with my old tits please
I started mapping when I was 13, when I got Warcraft 3. I just recently started getting into the SC2 Editor, but am also working on learning a couple programming languages...:)

it's not that bad ... you'll "naturally" be immune/totally under her control, so at least you wouldn't even feel it...
ohhh for this you do need to take the risk of having an heir (and u know what that means for you... danger danger!)
ulp, that's what i got.. and it's real hard ... well not really yet (but in both cases you forfeit any free time before 8pm or after 6/7 am)
@houndofbaskerville: Go
Don't forget your credit card is by default empty.

At least all the young girls tend to be nice to old men. They're harmless, right?
Oh god, we're derailing this too much *lol* I gotta stop it, because I'm a Mod and all. STOP.
Wanna talk about the Cow Level?
