Why arent you on a team?
Seems like someone with your knowledge should be quickly referenced, plus as you mentioned there are things that you don't know. If you were grouped with people who were anywhere near your skill level there is a better chance of them reaching solutions with you.
Unless you prefer the lone wolf thing then thats cool I guess.
I just had a run in with a guy who helped me. Put his name on my loading screen and now it's in gradients and I didn't save the original text. I want to delete him because he directly said that he didn't care about the localization error he passed to me. I've nver dealt with this kind of error before and least of all I'd expect a team member to play like a team player rather than "oops I effed up, well it's not my problem I didn't start the map"... He has lots of talent and for some reason he has a, "lol watch him try to get out of this one" attitude like I really need him. lol I DO! lol but there are other ways. Set my self back two days and now I'm slightly ahead again. Did what progress I made in two days, in 6 hours. :D.... :( sucked that I had to do it.. props to angry pro editors... dam predators.
I am on a team, I have dryeyece - and it's a hard bet as to who knows more about the data editor, him or prozaic, cause they are both at the top of the game. The problem with what I'm doing is that no one has done it before to the extent I have. If I need help with layout files i can ask helral because he has more practice with them than me. If I need help with the data editor I get dryeyece to do it. If I need help for what I'm doing I'm up shit creek. =\
The only thing worse than that "completely broad advice" is the "advice from a guy who is just guessing".
Usually, when I come to the point of posting a question (here or the hive) it is because I have spent an hour staring at something trying to figure it out. I will post of a half-wall of text showing exactly what I did and how it didn't work.
More times than not I get "why are you doing that anyway?" "you should go through all of your triggers and make sure it is right" (with a trigger posted). OR, I love when I get "you should just set everything to a variable, and run a loop, checking each variable, and then do actions based on the variables."
Sometimes any one of those thoughts might work. If I take a completely new look on the project, I have been known to scrap all of my work at hand, and start over with a much more complicated system that will look/feel smoother for the player. Often times, I have having a problem and even a rude answer that is an answer would be nice.
In defense of the people who make broad replies in an honest effort to help; a lot of questions are broad, and there are multiple ways to do things. It just feels like there are a lot of "fallback +1" answers that every question gets 3-4 of.
as I was told once in IRC - I shouldnt be asking questions cause if I can't fgure it out I'm fucked, no one else has done what I've done before.
It's sad, but sometimes it's also very true. As I said above it's not like level/game design is something you can learn 100% by the book. I understand why people would say that. It's true that anyone, at some point, cannot do more than just guess. The sad thing is people telling you're fucked (not only in IRC) are usually less skilled than you are and/or too lazy to search for a clue.
It's usually rare to be able to rely on your teammates when you are in the video games industry, basically because they already have a lot of work on their own... But it's even more true with skilled amateurs (or experts, to quote Nebuli2 :) ), just because they usually are more or less at the same level as you are. I have been using the Unreal Engine since I'm 12, I'm way better at it than the few pros I've been working with (I could be a mentor, really... I already had the opportunity to)... And yet, if you ask me to do a cinematic with this engine, I'd need a complete tutorial because I never spent enough time mastering this part of the editor.
Anyway, it was just to let people know that even pros are going completely random sometimes, mastering an editor doesn't give you the answer to everything. Don't ever forget that both level and game design are full-time jobs for a reason. People telling you're shit have basically no idea what it is to work on projects where you don't know where you're going, if they ever did that they would not hesitate to help you with their knowledge... Even if it's inaccurate, it's still a clue.
I just tested my map last night and had a tester find an error in the salvage command for zerg structures in that I had to set the prices to 500+ to make them cost anything. salvage "refund" returns the 500 so anyways, I found a solution for this afterwards but... this tester was a complete prick. Isn't it planned to be fixed in HotS? I'm not sure but I think they talked about localization issues during Blizzcon last year.
But you're right though, unfortunately random people testing maps are somehow expecting melee maps and/or simple game mechanics they could understand without reading anything. Nobody understands the objectives in my Sand Worm Survival map even though they are all displayed in the upper left corner during THE WHOLE EFFING GAME! It's pretty simple: hunt one race, protect yourself against the other. Yet nobody gets it. In Ikari Warriors controls are displayed on the loading screen (not much to say besides "move with arrows and throw grenades with mouse"), and people keep wondering how it works... Geeks these days...

Just found this thread, and I have to say I dont feel the same, at least for SC2Mapster. I see most threads in the data forum get perfect answers or at least very good directions, when of course someone knows the answer for the problem and the person who needs help actually takes the time to explain the problem correctly.

I agree. I've very rarely had to ask any questions on the SC2mapster forums. The search bar doesn't work very well at all, but Google works wonders (search for '[topic] site:sc2mapster.com' and you'll generally find your answer). When I have asked questions (all in the data forums), the responses have been generally helpful and resulted in my figuring out how to solve my problem.
I have to agree with Khalanil1 and SoulFilcher. I can't remember seeing an "angry pro editor" at all. Ever. In fact, I'm kind of glad to see how nice people are and how some people just keep answering questions all the time.
Personally, it feels like you're getting too upset over small pointless things and want to complain about it on the internet.
One of the guys on your team didn't help you localize and you had to figure it out yourself? I had a friend who wouldn't tell me how to do it. He kept shrugging it off as if it was super simple. So I took 10 minutes to search around on sc2mapster and learned how to do it myself.
One of your beta testers found a bug and gave you feedback on how easy it was to understand the game? Let's rage on him since he is obviously just playing stupid because he doesn't want to play the game despite his earlier interest.
Now you can blame someone else since they refuse to hold your hand but it's not their responsibility to help you. Eventually you'll have to solve something by yourself without outside help.
ok lol
the "friend" who gave me the localization error said that he wanted to help me finish this map. from scrap to finish. It's not my fault to expect him to follow through on what he said.
The feedback provided was rude. bottom line. you don't call someones months of work "broke to shit"... and of course if I make a map I should be open to all sorts of feedback, so I got the picture about him feeling lost.. but any 2nd grader could can read the first line on the loading screen, "kill units to get resources".. and then they could see upon startup that clicking on the worker shows that you can only build 1 affordable building.. barracks, spawning pool, gateway. If you would have had a hard time with that then go ahead and argue your point but if you agree with me, then plz stop acting like my being irritated at members of the community is faulty...
You can't volunteer to test a map and shut it down like I forced you into it.
You can't Volunteer to see a map to the finish, if you're not going to.
...take a horse to water, and then he says, "what am i supposed to do here?" lol common sense. click something

I guess the problem is that 'volunteering' in modding sites isnt as binding as it should be, since first, we don't really see each person other than our online personalities, and that the act of volunteering is completely free of cost and effortless. I have had a few teammates in WC3 modding and i'll have to say its hard to expect things to get done on time. Testing is more or less the same; I've had testers who complain about 2-3 sentence long tooltips or tutorials when they have everything from Dota, bit by bit, pretty much memorized in detail.
I'll just use the analogy you used, "You can take a horse to water, but you cannot force it to drink." You can bring a volunteer to playtest/help your map but you cannot make him do a 100% motivated job.
That is why I prefer to learn things myself in case I run into a dead end. Forcing a slacking 'volunteer' is not worth the trouble. Even if you do get him to work on your map i am very sure it would be just some crap work. Sometimes the only reliable person is yourself :(
most xbox games are fail... so yes its better to grow up on sc... i was one of those kids born in the 80's but yea graphics don't matter to me. PS i know you said nothing about tv/ politics... but yea... i only hope its the recession causing this so that once it fixes people will learn what they've done to themselves.
ah well i guess lol whatever fuels you bro.. why not put it here? but please try to keep it closely related to blizzard id hate for this thread to turn into a debate of homosexuals, abortions, or why obama should or should not be president. I made a lot of progress today. Someone did almost tip me over lol they said "what do i do?" and im beginning to think this is a standard like pre-set question that randoms come into your map with lol. but all is well. fixed the "broke to shit, tho it could have been said nicer" problems and I added Dark toss :D so now all three are up.
No gripes today besides the one about people who seek the negative. It's like the grinches of Blizzard lol they do it because they can. All I have to say to them, mostly for my own satisfaction, is that they are dumb. It's always easy to be imature and bring everybody down rather than contribute with substance to a conversation.
That is why I prefer to learn things myself in case I run into a dead end. Forcing a slacking 'volunteer' is not worth the trouble. Even if you do get him to work on your map i am very sure it would be just some crap work. Sometimes the only reliable person is yourself :(
Don't get me wrong, we're in the same boat :D
I put a lot of effort to not believe it to be like this. I push to let people help me, but if they flake it's not like I relied on them too much.. its not like i lost my map lol. the bonus of them actually doing something that I could not do is awesome. saves time and research esp. if it's in my own map, I cn just look at it. A lot of editors have that "solo" i did all by myself mentality but how could you brag? It just meant that you played it safe and refused to get help. for some, asking for help is a sign of strength. I pride myself in the amount of people I have had help me. I hoenstly can't count right now and for them tho, I have a great map. Someone who has been trimming at their map for two years was amazed at what got finished in my map in 3 weeks. Thanks to the help.
true. Having a few friends would lessen the amount of work by alot. I do not really see any bragging rights to making a map solo or in a team, but i guess that might be just me. I might even be bragging without even realizing it :D
It is also a notable fact that the games industry isnt made up by a few people. A good game like Starcraft 2 for example requires hundreds of people to work on :P I'll agree on the part where u said 'a sign of strength'.
The more the merrier I guess, as long as it doesnt damage your map (for example: I had a friend who once recoded my triggers thinking it was the 'wrong way' to do it. Wasted plenty of time debating and there was miscommunication among the team) i guess its fine. Since usually modders dont usually pay the people who are involved in its production, its quite hard, for me that is, to push people.

All I have to say to them, mostly for my own satisfaction, is that they are dumb. It's always easy to be imature and bring everybody down rather than contribute with substance to a conversation.
