@Windexglow: Go
It does work, I've used it :P
So, yes, if we all wanted to make a statement, we could take ten empty maps called "This Map Sucks 1" & "This Map Sucks 2" & etc and artificially boost them all to the top. See how quick they'd change their system then... (or at least give a press release about what sort of sorting method they do intend to release).
I'm still not exactly sure why passive-aggressively abusing the system is the preferred method of getting this problem noticed. There's been virtually no constructive discussion about this issue on the beta forums. It's typical of that place, I suppose, since most of the discussions there are from posturing children who are all basically identical in a sea of boiling angst.
But really, the best you can come up with is some cheap zero-effort version of a 4chan google bomb?
With the amount of angry posting that happens here, it wouldn't take more than a couple of extra clicks a day to bookmark a thread with the constructive ideas (that have ALREADY BEEN MENTIONED HERE) on the official forums and post there because, ya know, that's what they are for... If/when that doesn't work, then maybe alternative methods to get the idea out there might need to be taken. But seriously, complaining about what's obviously a broken system and then choosing to willfully exploit that system because you can (instead of making the slightest effort to get it fixed) reeks of the same petty mindset that plagues the official forums. I want what I want and I want it now, with no work on my part, even a little, and if you don't give it to me you're going to get punished.
To those reading this who may have actually tried to come up with an equitable solution and get it noticed, I applaud you.
To those that haven't gone to the developers and tried to find a solution, *this* is when the problems can be fixed. There's weeks of downtime coming up, and since the game itself is in minor tweaking phase, what do you think they will be working on?
This trick doesn't work for me, I don't know why but when I publish my map as public / locked it's not shown in the popularity list, I tried with a friend to host the game and let him find the map in the list clicking the "Show More" button but it was somehow hidden. I tried to make him host the map and that's the same.
We can only find the map with the search function O_O
I tried to do the same with another blank map (this time public / unlocked) and I had the same problem O_O
We are not Battle.net developers nor have any power on getting this fixed. Making suggestions is good but this is not our job. Blizzard has to come up with a solution to fix it, not us!
In the meantime, we have to find workarounds in order to use the current system. No, this is not being [put any adjective here]. As a map developer you want to promote your map, you do what is in your power to do it. If you don't, you just spent countless hours making a awesome map that no one will ever be able to play. That sucks!
95% of all released maps will be completely ignored because if they sit on page 5-10 or later you can't get a game going in a reasonable amount of time.
EXCUSE us for making sure our map doesn't automatically flounder just because it wasn't released on day 1.
......
Don't forget more players does not mean more scatter. When the first 3 pages are currently the only maps that are played, doubling the player count will not make the first 6 pages popular. It'll probably just make the first 3 pages twice as popular (the number of maps, however, will double!). Eventually you're going to need to multibox if you want to bump your map using a script.
Exploitation = Dota Rickroll map. Still up in the top 20 btw.
Bibendus, if I am not mistaken, you can't make a map public if it's locked. So it won't ever show up on the list.
And yeah Dota Rickroll should get the job done :P
Its not very hard for them tpo improve the current system, all they need to do is kill popularity and make it so it shows what someone is hosting except keep it hosted off bnet(maybe), although the current bnet hosting lag is bad enough and its only going to get better when the full game is released and anyone and everyone is playing it taking more bandwidth.
So if someone makes a new map and releases it for playtesting, it's okay to go around saying the map sucks and should be made better, just because it's bad, without providing any feedback to the author?
I doubt Blizzard will fly anyone out to California and force them to update the b.net code. All I was saying was that taking a tiny amount of effort to explain possible solutions to the problems that exist in a relevant forum might be a tad bit more productive than bemoaning everything that obviously doesn't work as well as it could.
What's the guarantee that once a few people start using macros to bump their own maps, that the creators of the already popular maps won't just go and do the same to make sure they stay on top?
Now this is a fucked up interface.
They should add a dropdown menu to set different sorting methods.
- By release date - By popularity - By rating - By genre - By author [search paramenter]
Etc...
If they only sort it by popularity, then god knows how many shitty footman wars or anime maps will be on the top of the list. [assuming u guys all heard about the issue of shitty anime maps to second the popularity of DotA in Wc3 just because of the genre...]
I just figured out the BIGGEST problem with popularity sort!
One guy AFKing in your lobby as host for an hour will totally kill your popularity all the way down to 0! at least if you have a high number of players and its not ridiculously popular that there are more than 1 full lobbies waiting to play.
Yeah, the system is broken in a number of ways, I've made posts about this on the official forums but I doubt they got any real notice.
The issue of overly simplistic maps like footmen wars being popular is something nothing can be done about, there's just a lot of people who aren't looking for complexity.
We know the solution but we got no power to bring it to live. People working on it got no idea about making a system for advanced users. They care only about some click happy morons. Life is brutal.
Making soring by:
And finally...
Would be kinda satisfying.
Damn, that's nice. If the create spam script to boost one's own map in popularity doesn't work, this trick could be used to remove some other maps off the front page. Thanks! :D
(I think I crossed an ethical line there. EXCUSE me for using the tools Blizzard laid before me to reach the goals Blizzard laid before me. GG)
Seems like a simple solution is to make the host need to be a unique ip or game key.
It really needs a rating system, something like, when you finish a game it would ask to rate it 1-5 stars or something. And probably only the first time you played , or every time but it changes your vote. Also, it should tell you how many games are waiting for more players before you join.
Then sorting by that would be more helpful then just how many games were created.
Also the create game list shouldn't look anything like the join game list, it should look more like a website with different sorting methods and top lists.
Also, not related, but I think everything in this new bnet is too large, I hate how you have to scroll to see every player in a server list, who had that bright idea?
Hmmm, it seems that so far in phase 2 this hasn't been improved. I hope it will change soon (or else we will have to make 20 rickroll maps and a few bots).
@bradleo:
hehe, I like the idea.D
At least you can update the map without losing all its popularity.
Yeah, the current system is completely idiotic.
Was playing some inhouse games with about 6 friends. After 3 or 4 completely shitty games that were on the first few pages of the list, my friends started whining, so I decided instead to pick a map that was third from the very bottom. Turns out that game was significantly better than any of the other games we had played. Sadly, since it was so far down, no one joined when we made the game public. Quite lame.
Also, some newer maps don't even appear on the list unless you search for them. Quite lame.
