The population and ppm (posts per minute) seem to have slowed a lot for sc2mapster. Have people already become tired of mapping or has the popularity system caused many to just stop trying? Seems things have slowed down a lot.

Nah I think it's more of we're all busy actually working on our maps than posting here. A lot of questions have been asked and by now lots of people should know answers to lots of things, and thus have no reason to ask here.
Most questions were asked, most thoughts about campaign and lore were discussed, lot of tutorials are available. Thats the reason of lesser amount of forum posts I think :)
Personally, I would hope so. Less crap maps to deal with. I think a good deal of cool projects are nearing completion though, So , I cant wait for that.
Edit: Or I could be wrong. Most teams seem to have died out or fallen apart.
The initial buzz of Starcraft 2 is over. Only the most interested people are staying :) We are going to reduce the numbers of forums so there aren't any dead forums like now.
Well, the popularity System can't be it. A current round of NOTD takes around 1hour. And the map is only 10% done. In just 3 days it nearly hit the first page of the Pop-List. So, yeah. There goes Rodrigos crying for how maps can only be for this many player and that long. NOTD looks like shit, needs a lot of changes to be better and is missing most of its storyline, etc. ... But people enjoy it a lot. If they're not total fucktards and die on the first few Zergies >.>
Also, there is a lot of very good projects being developed, that haven't been shown yet. I saw what malu05 is doing currently in his free-time, while also working on TSOF for some parts ... and its very cool :D We also got a few smaller projects running while we work on TSOF with the Ravens, so, yeah, you can expect some nice maps in the future (people watching ModCraft know what I can do with a couple of Trees, a little Fog and Water.)
Edit: Or I could be wrong. Most teams seem to have died out or fallen
apart.
Admittedly, the Editor isn't very team-friendly. But, unless you have a "Wings of Liberty"-size project you don't need more than 1 person working on a map. I feel like people are refusing to learn the ways of the Starcraft II editor mainly because they're sticking to doing stuff the "Warcraft III"/"Brood Wars" way (case in point, implementing triggers for something which can be easily achieved using data).Oftentimes, a single person can learn to create acceptably good levels of Terrain, Triggers and Data for a decent map. Once we've enough of those quality releases, then it is at that time that there will be people competent enough to make a team-scale project.
I know our team isn't burnt out, just with so much work to do its a solid choice between browsing the forums or working and we usually tend to stick to the work. I'm sure a lot of other mappers feel the same way. It will be good to see when these mappers finish their projects because they will be very polished unlike many of the earlier releases.
Well i know that one of the maps i'm working on is almost complete. Just waiting for the data editor and terrainer to get back to me so i can put it all together and release a beta version of it :D
Plus, lots of people seem to be asking more complex questions than a few months ago, which means less people know the answer, so less people post on the thread.
I honestly think most people are busy working on this projects at this point. And most people want to know how the map market place is going to work out. Personally I don't think trying to sell maps are going to compare in anyway with iPhone Apps. So I think the people are starting to trend more and more to the people who enjoy modding. Same way that wc3campaigns and hive work shop did at first when wc3 came out.

Cool. Sometimes, just sometimes, it can feel kinda "lonely" on Sc2mapster because of the feeling that most teams are dead(and I know quite few that are). But its good to know that the dedicated few and newer ones still push on.
The editor itself is largely to blame. Like Klishu mentioned.
Its just really tedious and long and boring and time consuming. Takes the fun out of editing.
It takes me 15-20 minutes minimum to make one tower in my tower defense (based on duplicating one I already have lol):
- Duplicate first tower.
- Rename unit, actor, attack actor, model, damage effect, LM effect, turret, weapon unit, and weapon
- go into actors and manually duplicate Range actor, Turret actor, attack missile actor and rename and set all of those.
- set the actor model/icon
- set attack missile and attack impact art stuff
- make sure the building splat and building birth actors have a new event for when this tower is built
- set the building cost and set the damage/weapon speed
- make a button for building it.
- add this tower to the build ability
- add the button and building to the builder's command card.
Takes me forever to do all those repetitive processes for each one haha... wish there was a wizard :D
Anyway, I finally got that TD out there and it's on page 2 now on US (in a few days nicely enough)... so people seem to like it. I still have my big RPG and a few more minor projects on the way... I hope we can see lots of sc2mapster on page 1... maps that are great, are fun, and are of quality!
And I really don't know how popularity works atm. I did have to host my TD and stay in it for 5 minutes (and repeat) about 10 times to just get it 10 games played per hour... then it took off on its own. So Rodrigo is somewhat right I think!
maybe ppl got tired of dealing with blizzards bullshit, it is basically impossible right now to get a map played because the search function on b.net doesnt work
When my project brainstorming went from 'what cool game do I want to make' to 'how do I design my map to succeed in the popularity system' that was the deathblow for me. Case in point: Nexus Word Wars. I mean, really? Talk about going to the logical extreme.
When I make a map, it's something I think is fun and interesting. I don't care if it's popular (sure it was a nice feeling when I made page one for a week) but I DO want to be able to play my games and not see them buried under a terrible system. Right now it feels like half the effort goes into making the map, and the other half goes into advertising to find people to play so it's not lost somewhere on page 13 of 'more games.'
Honestly I feel very silly for how much time I spent learning the editor at this point.
The popularity system is what really kills any though of me trying to make a new map or heaven forbid even change the damn name of my map, for fear that no one will see it / play it.
It was so much better for w3.
And why the hell cant a multi-billion dollar company like blizzard make a search function...
honestly the other that would help is if blizzard built in a map transfer across all the different servers. I don't understand why they wouldn't making it even easier for mappers to get their maps up for everyone to regardless of which server they play on.
the popularity system just needs to be refined and popularity needs to redfined to most games per hour and put into a tab with more options( like most unique number of players played, and longest games per number of players.) that would make the popularity system a lot more complete and versitile. when they do that it will bring lots more vartity in the maps

There is a search function that works rather well; unfortunately it is only for creating a game, not joining one.

It can't be "questions have been asked." The editor allows one to implement a limitless number of features. There's always much left to learn.

I haven't really noticed this trend at all, tbh. WTEs are going better than ever, even if I'm not very active in them myself.

Yea it feels like there's much less going on. Less questions asked, less things discovered, less exceptional projects being newsed...
