Is there a quick or easier way of doing this? I've been watching a few lengthy tutorials and wondered if there is an easier way to create duplicate/custom units e.g. Spine Crawler
if you have hard time figuring out what to check and what do not, you check whatever you will want to modify, like weapon etc.
You also have to learn structure, how stuff is linked, what's possibly part of something.
For example Marine weapon have effect damage and this one will also be listed when duplicating. Except unit actor you most likely need also it's attack actor and possibly sound actor etc.
Data editor is hard thing to grasp and everyone will admin it so don't expect it to be easy trip :p But it's damn powerful and flexible
I've tried several different tutorials they are all different.
1 out of 3 solutions work (i'm assuming they're old or outdated guides?) but it I'm getting an error when the Spine Crawler attacks a unit.
ActionImpact message arrived before [ 1c 6]
CActorAction[SpineCrawlerAttack] commenced.
WARNING [ 8 11]
CActorAction[SpineCrawlerAttack2]
Can only create one CActorAction
per effect [ImpalerTentacleLM].
I'm assuming it's trying to do more than 1 thing at once, no?
I guess I want to know which is the right way of creating a new unit ;) Nerfpl

it tries to 'Event -> create' actor more than once. most likely attack actor.
Tentacles are quite more complex than normal launch etc units
Creating new unit is way more painful then simply duplicating one
there's no right way. It's all the same big list of steps. At start you should duplicate marine and go from there. Personally i always duplicate as there's completely no reason not to. Can't really help you more, as i said, there's too much stuff involved
Short answer: No there is no easy way to make custom unit.
Longer answer:
When I started to create my own campaign for Starcraft2 I had idea like "I just copy some unit and rename it to hero, increase its hp and damage". There is no way to just make a copy of some unit. It took almost year before I fully understand how I can duplicate unit properly. Duplicating is diffrent process for every unit so there is not any generic rules how to copy unit :(
I have raged about this many times but it really kills motivation of many map makers when duplicating unit take this much work. Well, good thing is that you can really do ANYTHING with this editor :)

Yea who didn't :p i was like WTFFFFFF!!!! /Blacklist Blizzard
Great tutorial this is the sort of stuff i'm looking for (updated guides). Mind you I did mine slightly different to get it to work.
Create Duplicate Unit > Select All Actors (only) . Done!
When duplicating my Spire Colony I hit an error and wasn't sure why and so I started removing some actors that were in the error log and that fixed it.
But you're way seems more reliable so I'll give it a shot !!
Hi All,
Is there a quick or easier way of doing this? I've been watching a few lengthy tutorials and wondered if there is an easier way to create duplicate/custom units e.g. Spine Crawler
Any ideas?

Make a new Unit and A new model, and Copy from parent, the duplicate commands fail
and with the copy from parent the only thing that breaks is that of Actor events, the subgroups break on some of the events.
depends on what's the hard part for you.

Cheers,
Fixed it. Woah =\ I sorta do this when I ask for help.
No more error message ^_^ I've removed Actors; 'SpineCrawlerAttack copy' & 'SpineCrawlerAttack2 copy'
Thanks for quick replies !!
It's a big topic. it takes time and practice and experimentation.
your trying to swim in deep waters without really knowing how to swim :)

Thanks Terhonator!
Shouldn't this be in the data thread not triggers?

Good point DarlD. Maybe a MOD could move it for me? Sorry for the confusion!
