I want to make checkpoints in my RPG. So when the player dies, the game resets to the last checkpoint, restoring all units and triggers. Is this possible?
As long as Saving in Multiplayer is not possible (AFAIK) you have to use Variables or the Bank System to save all necessary Data.
When your Hero dies, just reload all Data...
So there is no way to just reset the game to an earlier time? Like if you're 10 minutes into the game and you want to reset everything to how it was 5 minutes into the game. Like a checkpoint/saving system that caches the game.

Like some sort of auto-save and restore game state capability... or are you wanting to simulate this with triggers?

You're looking to do something like the game's normal save/load capabilities with triggers. But it doesn't work that way.
So no, you can't.
You can only create auto-saves, but you can't auto-load.
