Hey there, didn't really know in what forum to put this and unfortunatly didn't find anythink regarding my problem in the forums. So what I wanna do is put some critters on my map but they should only be in a determined zone. Problem is that it's gonna be a melee map so I don't wanna use any triggers if possible. I put some kind of self made fence around them to keep them in place but it doesn't really work out. Also it's apparently no problem for them to jump down cliffs.
So yeah, does anyone know how to keep Critters in a certain area?
While keeping to melee requirements, I think this is pretty much impossible. Best bet would be the 'self made fence' you're mentioning. Alternatively you can surround the zone with red pathing, but that will prevent any ground unit from going in there aside form serving to keep the critters inside.
Well actually the whole zone for the critters is filled with red pathing And the fence is no hold up for the critters, even the provided fences are passable. I thought it was somehow possible to denie that :/
If the whole zone is red, that means you placed the critters on terrain that's supposed to be inaccessible for them. This automatically turns their footprints off and allows them to walk ANYWHERE. Also, the fences you're talking about likely do not have any kind of footprint, as is the case with many doodads. You need to paint pathing under them to make it work.
Long story short - make a 'cage' with pathing. Surround your critters with it. Don't fill up the entire area with it. If you want it to look pretty, make a cage with doodads, then paint the pathing underneath them red.
Unless there's really no other option, don't use pathing blockers. They have the same function as pathing except that they use more memory. The only time you should use them is if you're planning on destroying them with triggers lateron in the map, opening up a passage that used to be blocked. Additionally, data editing pathing blockers turns your map from melee to custom.
What exactly are you trying to do here? Creating a holding pen, or just a large area on the map that's inaccessible to ground units save critters? I still reckon barring the area off with red pathing should fix your problem. Just don't spread red pathing all over the place.
The reason I wanna have it there is so that sieged tanks can't shoot units that are passing the choke. Usually I would use trees or some cliffs etc. to do that and that pasture should have the same function, blocking the space and not letting any units inside there to abuse high ground.
Actually I had the idea to paint red pathing very tightly around the critters, that way no units can land in that particular spot. Only the critters won't be able to walk around at all :/
Gonna use that if it's not possible to solve the problem in an other way.
To be fair, it's not something that's possible easily. Definitely not if you cannot use triggering or data editing. Critters are ground units and bound to the same pathing laws as melee ground units. There isn't a simple way to make a difference between them.
And oh, you might also want to add some more fences near the cliff - real cows fall off cliffs if they're not fenced off, I think. Use page down to lower 'm into the ground and make them less high to make it look better.

Well although cows aren't too smart they're not that stupid either to jump down cliffs :)
But yeah, hat to lower those fences a bit to make it a little more realistic^^
@Kanaru, that was actually what I didn't want to But have to do it anyway now :(

Duh.

Create a custom pathing blocker for Unused 01. Tick off the dependancy flag for the critters for Unused 01. Create a fence around it.
Is there a tutorial somewhere how to do stuff like that? I'm terrible with data changing :(
@Mozared, the problem with that would be that I don't want other units to be in that area but I don't want to make it a no fly zone either :(

Ok so here we go:

Well ok, then I'm just gonna stick to the way of pathing around them^^
Thanks anyway for your help and advice :)
You're welcome :)

If you just want them to sit still, remove the Wander ability from them.
I think it's an ability anyway, might be a behavior.

@FlopTurnReaver: Go
The problem with that is the units could easily be air dropped in via medivac
@ZeroAme: Go
No, actually the red pathing is too tight for even marines to land in those spots. Already tested :P
Btw. does anyone know how to make a critter attack any players?^^
You could give them attacks and place them for the hostile player.
Hm sounds good. So how exactly do I do that? I think I gotta change the "Effect" from suicide to some attack, just haven't figured out how :/
EDIT: I changed it to hostile and now it's red to me but doesn't attack. I also added an attack. I think.^^
