I just want a simple button on the command card that, when pressed can be detected by a trigger. That's all!
But the event wants an ability command, whatever that is, and I see no way of creating this "ability command."
Does anybody know?
Just create a new Effect (Instant) ability and don't change anything, unless you want to. You can put energy costs and requirements and whatever else you want but don't give it any actual effect. Then you can run triggers on that ability's Execute or Prep or whatever, while the ability itself doesn't do anything.
Unfortunately, when I create a command card with that dummy ability, the drop down for Ability Command contains nothing...
Also, for some reason the command card button doesn't even show up on the unit. Why is that? It's there in the editor...
And one more thing... Is there some sort of priority with box-highlighting in the game? For some reason a structure has a higher priority, so when i do a box highlight, the structure is selected. Any units behind the structure are stuck there forever because they can't be selected. How is it possible to fix this?
Sorry, you need to make sure and give your ability a "Default Button" under the Ability - Commands (under Execute). That should fix both of your questions.
As for the last one, I believe the value you want to change can be found under Models. Look for "selection layer"; a model with a higher selection layer will block those with a lower layer. Pretty sure.
I have a quick question for a similar problem when creating a custom ability, although I created a button and placed in on my command card, when I try to select the ability from the drop down, the ability doesn't show up at all, can't figure out why.
So the icon I had selected to use for the ability was "gather minerals" and in game the button is actually trying to gather minerals as opposed to the custom ability I linked it to, did I miss something?

I'm using the button Gather Minerals but the ability is linked to my custom build ability with the ability command set to the "default button" to build my tower.

@xytor: Go
Yes, the trigger detects a command linked to an ability, not anything to do with the command card per se.
Just create what's called a dummy ability. It doesn't do anything but you can detect its Execute command (or whatever) via triggers.

Perfect, on all counts.
Thank you, xenrathe!

@Logikz0:
Make sure you add the ability to the units Abilities+ menu.
It was in there, apparently leaving the editor alone for 30 minutes automatically solved the problem, cool I guess...

Saving does the trick for me. Apparently some things aren't loaded onto menus until you save.
Did you select the ability "Gather minerals" or the button "Gather Minerals"?
I'm using the button Gather Minerals but the ability is linked to my custom build ability with the ability command set to the "default button" to build my tower.
Also, how do I modify button tooltips and such?
Those are in the 'Buttons' tab of the data editor. :)
You need to use the same button in the ability and on the command card.
