Hi guys, I'm not exactly the most experienced map editor in the world, I played around with the SC campaign editor way back in the day for a while, and tried out the WC3 editor a couple of times to no real effect, and I was really excited to take the SC2 editor for a spin. Well, I have, but I've found that there are a few questions I'm unable to answer for myself, and was wondering if anyone else could help me.
To try it out I thought I'd attempt to recreate one or three of the first campaign levels from the original - and in doing so, my main questions have become:
How the hell can you export or save unit/abilities/etc data outside of the map, so that you can use it again in another map? Obviously stats and the like differed between the original and the sequel, and it would be cool to be able to transfer custom data from one map to another.
How the hell do you use imported sounds? I've got the sounds from the original game, as wav files. I've imported them. However, as of right now, I have no idea how to make use of them. When I look in the trigger editor or the cinematics editor, there's options for Transmission. However, when I try to choose a sound the only options are the stock response sounds for the units in the game.
If anyone has any insight on either of these, or just wants to talk about the editor in general, I'd love to.
If this thread does not belong here, and this forums is for srs bzns only as conducted by map creators of the highest caliber, I apologize for cluttering up your forums and understand the delete.
You could try saving units/abilities/etc as a mod file and have the player run that with your other maps. Takes a bit more work on the players side, but it should make it easier for you.
I suggest just editing one of the stock sounds and replacing it with one of your wav. Do this as a mod folder along with all your other changes excluding terrain and triggers.
I too have many questions (sorry, no answers). Does anyone know how to make custom units? I could do it with ease in the War3 editor, but I am having a hell of a time with it in this SC2 editor. Also, how to make heroes? I have found the enable/disable experience gain triggers but do not know how to make a Hero. I have found the "Hero" label, but I think I should learn how to make a unit first.
For the saving of data, I believe a little exploration in the "Bank" label of the trigger actions will be enlightening. From what I see, they seem to be exactly what you're looking for.
As for the part about heroes, that will take a bit more exploration in the data editor. I believe you can make a hero entirely there without touching the trigger editor. Stuff within the trigger editor pertaining to heroes would, I think, be more useful in case you want to dynamically create or modify heroes or their properties ingame. Most of the stuff within the data editor seems to be possible to actively modify during runtime through galaxy scripting if not already handled by the GUI Trigger Editor.
