Hello.
I just started with the map editor, i read many tutorials around that really help a lot but there are almost always blank spots in many (means fail to post or mention a step) so it is really complicated trying to use the map editor to create a new unit or modify it without getting in a mess.
Im not complaining at all but i mention it so you understand why i post this question and i wont get answers like "read the tutorials". If someone can linked me to the answer or just post here ill really appreciate it.
Q1: Can i be able to modify and use a campaign unit to be used in a melee map, if yes how?
Now, where i got stuck? I will explain my steps with some pictures so you can see and understand what im trying to say:
1.- This is a pic of the original Campaign Unit:
click for picture here
2.- This is what i did so far:
- Creating new unit: Add a new object data: DATA> Object properties:
- Duplicating actor: Actor> SS_SwamGuardian > right click > Duplicate > Duplicate objects (all marked) + ok
- Assigning token to copy: Actors> SS_SG Copy > Unit Name > right click> modify value> changed to zerg corvette.
- Modiffying actor to resemble original unit: Actor> Art: Model, Model build, Model placement> changed to SS_SwamGuardian Copy.
- Modifying Units Commands and abilities: Units> Abilities> Erase all and create new ones: stop, attack, move.
- Creating Unit Commands: Units > Add buttons: Stop,Move, hold possition, Patrol, Attack.
Results:I can see the avatar of my new unit in units, also i can place it in the map, BUT there is a problem. When i test the unit, I can not move it or click it at all.
Q3 : What is wrong, did i missed a step, failed configuring or ading data?
PD: I will appreciate any comments, solutions, guiadance to resolve thes problems, also i apologize for the typos but im not an english born person so this is my best at english writing.
i didnt read the whole thing but you didn't want to copy from my SS_swarm... create a new unit not copied give it a mover, plane array, speed-2, acceleration-1000, height 2 or 3 something is a air unit height. go to the SS_swarm... actor and click token at the top and select your unit this should work give it the move attack stop ability give it a weapon to attack... it should move and stuff. if actors dont work right you will have to go into the previewer see the guardians move ability name attack name. i know this isn't in depth but i would have to type like 250 lines on how to do this i mean i could tomorrow im tired now lol
I will appreciate it if you do it, i tryed several hrs now trying to make it move but i know im missing something. What i understand its like creating a new unit from scratch and then just give the SS_Swarm art attached? or create a new actor an then linked it to my new unit?
If you can be more specific i will appreciate it, i need to understand how to modify this type of units (campaign) because i have to do it with several of them and modifying one will learn how to do it with the rest.
ok hey ive checked it and i had to take some stuff from the corrupter like the wire frame but ill get to that.
so first off create a new unit name it Swarm Guardian, based on: default settings (unit) object family: champaign race: zerg object type: unit field values: do not change click ok. into the unit part go to Ability-Abilities + add move, stop, attack. Go to Ability-Command Card add the button move set command type to ability command, ability: move ability command: move; repeat for attack and stop. go to weapons and add Corruptor - parasite Spore. set movement-acceleration to 1000. set movement-collide to Flying, set movement-mover to fly, set movement-plane array to air, set movement-speed to 2.set Stats-life maximum to 100, set stats-life starting amount to 100,set stats-sight radius to 7, sets ui-height to 8, ui-life armor name zerg air carapace.
there you go you have a working unit moving attacking but its a black sphere so go to the actor tab and follow these steps.
create a new actor named Swarm Guardian click suggest next to id actor type: unit Based on: generic unit base parent:(blank) doodad type (none) field values do not change click ok. under token double click bogus and look for the unit swarm guardian under art model click and look for SS_SwarmGuardian do the same for Art-Model(build) and (placement) under Art-Model (portrait) Select Portrait - Corruptor, under Event - Events + and go to the botrtome effect click it and right click and add a new Msg Type: Weapon start Source Name: Corruptor - Parasite Spore Sub name:any set the action as animation play and the animation properties attack. for ui -Group Icon + set the image as btn-unit-zerg-Corruptor.dds set the same thing for the wireframe.
thats it it should work if you have any question just ask
I understand why now, but I liked making custom units in WarEdit personally, it was so much easier. You don't have to make actors and all that new stuff, I personally liked War3's a lot more.
Are you aware you can hit 'test map' and test it locally on your cpu, with or without internet connection? Anyway....I have a tutorial in my signature (the first one) that might help. I made it a long time ago. Anyway, I'd recommend duplicating existing units and modifying them to your needs rather than starting from scratch. Also, anything starting in SS is (I belive) used in a top down shooter minigame found within the campagin, and so would not be a good choice to base something off of. Right click on you're base unit (say, the marine) and click duplicate. Just check of the one box for the actor that has the same name as the unit. Hit OK, and you have you're copy ready to modify. Again, read my tutorial for more in-depth instructions that cover that and also how to modify the unit's model and other aspects.
edit- I just realized the steps I posed here are different from the ones in the tutorial. Both ways work, though, so dont get confused :D Also, to change the actual model just modify the 'mode' field under the unit's actor.
Well making new units is incredibly easy once you just learn how. Then it takes like 5 seconds. And besides, the wc3 editor was great but sc2 lets you modify just about anything. Sure its harder for newbies to pick up, but thats why sc2mapster exists- to help everybody make maps :D

me myself did not find the editor that hard all i learned was data i do not know the full power of it yet i watched about two tutorials on each basic part and after that i taught my self...Duplicating units/creating, ability, behavior, effects, actors, movers, other stuff that would take like a few seconds to pick up like validators although im not advance wit actors wish i was
Check the Unit - Flags on the unit, SS stuff has untargetable, uncommandable and unselectable checked. I think this is the reason you had those problems with a pure copy of the unit.

I know about your tutorial (actually some modifycations and triggers i will use it to create, great tutorial) and get some ideas about it, now what about SS_Units? can I be able to modify them? can I be able to use in a melee map? Or at least, Can I create a unit based in these units? (like using their appereance, movements etc).... please tell me yes cuz my map depend on 4 of these SS_Units.
PD: I didnt know i can test the maps without loging in in battlenet account :(

And yes thats the main reason i cant copy them, its not like a regular unit that you can duplicate it, and i noticed those flags. but I also noticed that many of these units are being used in other custom maps so must be a way to modify, costumized and make them playable like a regular unit. Also I thought after researching around, that this forum is the best resource of knowledge about sc2 maps and costumization.
So again the same questions? Would I be able to modify, costumized and use the campaign units (like SS_Units) to be used as a regular melee units?

Ok first rock in the road..... I did this:
create the map: Dependencies:melee (Liberty) > Modify: Add dependencies: Add standard-Liberty (campaign)> click ok
Adding the units by instructions: click DATA: Data type: Units > Add object: "PROBLEM" (see the picture), It gave me 2 options to click: Set to Parent value or Copy from; Do not Change option is not available:
ok yeah i was sorta rushing a little bit it will say do not change after you click ok set to parent value is the same i was re-looking when i was typing and it said do not change so yeah set to parent value will work
I follow all the steps here and still have the white sphere, now maybe i have some difficulties from this steps maybe you can explain it more, could be the problem there?
........... under Event - Events + and go to the botrtome effect click it and right click and add a new Msg Type: Weapon start Source Name: Corruptor - Parasite Spore Sub name:any set the action as animation play and the animation properties attack. for ui -Group Icon + set the image as btn-unit-zerg-Corruptor.dds set the same thing for the wireframe.
