I'm not sure what I changed, but now my units leave a permanent blurry donut-shaped impact mark upon hitting their target. I'm not sure what caused this, but it causes a lot of lag and when units roam through that impact area, it also blurs them.
(Edit: The mark seems to be unit death related. It's only left on the ground if the unit is killed.)

Is it possible you have FX related to death that you forgot to configure (e.g. not telling it to play animations)?
