Ok. I don't use triggers much. I would assume the data editor cannon access custom values at all, but I may be wrong. Unless someone else has done this, I wouldn't get your hopes up.
If you're trying to make a tolltip or something like that for an ability, I would use catalog set field value for a value most units don't use, and <d ref> that value in your tooltip. Maybe give a unit without shields some shield regen or something.
thing is, im trying to use it for a buncha things....... see how custom value has an index ? (the 0) that means i can probably set 0 to ... lets say 20 and 1 to 30 and 2 to 10 and call it all back
and do arithmatic with it and stuff
if i were to use an unused arbitrary value, it'd have to be something that can do something like that..... like a tooltip or something
also Catelog = all units of the type, im trying to work with individuals
Bump. I too am looking into using Custom Values in my map... particularly for a system relating to the weight of items carried...
I miss how in the Warcraft editor you could simply assign a default Custom Value to a unit in the 'Data Editor'...
I have developed a lengthy workaround which utilises a trigger already used in my map...
Basically:

Event - any unit enters map area

Condition - Unit Type == Or: ItemA, ItemB, ItemC, ItemD...

Actions - Set Custom Value 0 of Triggering Unit to (incremental global variable)

Actions - Modify (incremental global variable) +1
I then use a lengthy If, Then, Else statement to assign another Custom Value to each unit, defined by its type. This second custom value is the Items Weight.
Hope this is of use to you (I don't fully understand what you want to do though)
You can do arithmic stuff inside the <ref> tags. Look at the Ghost's cloak tooltip for reference (it subtracts energy regeneration from energy drain).
There's no way to reference triggers, variables or custom values from inside the <ref> tags, so the only way really is to use Catalog values.
But I guess you're using custom value because you want a lot of units to have different values that show up in the tooltip.
Catalog values change it for every unit of the same type, so that probably won't help you much.
All in all: If Set Catalog Value doesn't help you, nothing will.
You could make your own tooltip window by using custom dialogs, thus removing the need for <ref>.
im not sure how to delete a post, so forgive me for creating a new one
i wanted to reformat my request, how can i <d ref an item or unit's custom value? i dont know where to start with this one
@ZeroExodus: Go
Umm... what do you mean by custom value?
@shardfenix: Go
custom value as in, the custom value you can set on units using a trigger like so
Actions Unit - Set (Picked unit) custom value 0 to 1.0
it uses reals and has no real purpose aside from triggers
Hint Text: Sets a unit's custom value. This is an arbitrary property that can be recalled using "Custom Value Of Unit".

blizz better hurry up n improve their stuff, its beyond me how they did this
i get the main game doesn't deal with items, so it wasn't a priority, but not being able to do this kind of stuff with native items is a real bother
im gonna have to do like Mille25 did for starcraft universe n make my own "Items" then
