Squadron Tactics

Warning: This project is experimental. Its files will not synchronize across the CurseForge network.

This is a possible project idea for me, though It is likely this one will be pushed aside in favour of a more in depth RPG once I find one I feel interested enough in, or develop an idea for one.

Unlike what I would usually work on, there won't be as much immersion or story in this project.

Overview

This map intended to be a very team intensive game. It is to be built entirely around squadron tactics, to make teamwork as strong an element as possible. I hope to make this to the point that people will actually form set teams of four, which could compete in tournaments and perhaps a ladder. I plan to add some functionality for teams, such as saving stats or the like.

Sqaudrons

Each squadron will consist of 4 players, the team will be able to choose one of the three races, and all members in the squad will be of that race.

Classes

Each race has 5 classes to choose from:

Terran

  • Marine
  • Marauder
  • Reaper
  • SCV
  • Ghost

Protoss

  • Zealot
  • Shadow Templar (Lenassa)
  • Dark Templar (Zera'tai)
  • High Templar
  • Archon

Zerg

  • Zergling
  • Roach
  • Hydralisk
  • Infested Marine
  • Queen

Customization

Each class will be extremely customizable to different play styles, as you can see in the screenshot at the bottom of this map description. The player can customize by choosing;

  • Attributes
Each race has 3 attributes (Except Ghosts use Psionics instead of Power), which can be set to any value between 5 and 20. You have 30 points to spend.
  • Upgrades
You can choose 2 out of 4 possible upgrades, each set of upgrades is unique to their class.
  • Skills
You can choose 4 out of 18 possible skills, each set of skills is unique to their class, though a couple, such as heal, will overlap. There are 3 categories of skills; Offensive, Defensive, and Support. You can see that pretty clearly in the screenshot at the bottom of this post.

Gameplay

At the moment I am considering 4 game modes;

  • Story Mode (4 Player)
One team will traverse through a region. There will possibly be some story, you will fight through the area and ultimately face a boss, and there will be a couple areas I am thinking. I hope to make this very difficult and make some more team based objectives than simply fighting.
  • Arena Mode (4 Player)
A single team will fight through a series of boss battles, in an enclosed arena.
  • Competitive Mode (8 Player)
This mode is kind of Iffy, but basically it would be similar to story mode, but instead 2 teams attempt to complete the region. They each attempt to do it better, this could mean faster, or more kills, or something else.
  • Versus Mode (8 Player)
Two squads face off in an arena, or possibly a region.

Save/Load and Other Maps

I hopefully plan to fit a couple of regions/arenas into each map, but I eventually plan to create a couple additional maps with different climates (Yes I know you can combine tilesets)

Hopefully. you will be able to receive achievements for a couple different things, particularly completing regions and bosses, etc. These would be automatically saved.

I am also planning to allow you to save unit builds, so that you don't have to go through setting up all your stats, colour, class, skills, upgrades, etc. every time.

Of course this is all just plans and not necessarily what will happen.
