I don't think it cut in front as much as the game is much more easily produced, considering it's a card game loosely based on their own TCG. It's also got little risk in release due to its low development cost and lack of market competition.

Blizzard Allstars is going up against the big league MOBA's, which is probably why they're taking their sweet time developing it. TBH though, all I really want out of it are the models for custom maps. Oh well, here's to Legacy of the Void....

Nice first model! It's good to see you're learning to grasp the basics of a modelling package, the first step into 3D can be somewhat daunting for most people. There's a lot to learn, from modelling to texturing to animations and more. My words of advice would be to prepare to make many mistakes, but take every one as a lesson to get better!

Here's some information about modelling for Starcraft 2 (and games in general) that you might not know. Because of the way RTS engines work, and how you may have many units on the screen at once, the game has some technical guidelines. SC2 uses low poly models in game, generally around the 1000 to 5000 poly range. The high-poly detail comes from using special texture maps, namely the Normal Map, which creates fake detail onto a low poly model. The low poly model would actually look similar to the model you started out with!

Normal maps are more of a advanced technique to learn, however, so don't be discouraged if you can't achieve your goals right away. There are many different methods to create a Normal map, but I would probably advise you continuing to learn more about modelling and basic texturing before jumping into that. It's simply about taking small steps and learning to do things the right way :)

There isn't any real problem with importing a 110,000 poly model (as the engine should still be able to handle it), but it is not an ideal situation to have. I would suggest taking a look at some of Blizzard's models and getting an idea of what their poly counts are and how they construct their units. You could also try making some test models under the 5000 poly budget to get a rough idea what you have to work with.

I hope this was helpful for you.

Thanks for the crits! I'm gonna tweak the spec and add a bit more grit to him. I'll need to fix the alpha on his beard as well, and probably make it less white than it is right now. I use Sculptrix, Maya and Photoshop mainly, with Max as the exporter for SC2.

I've been getting some models set up for Startools. It's a pain having to recreate shaders and set up the animations again for them all. I'll probably be including weaponless versions of some of them as well, with separate weapon models as attachments. I haven't touched some of these models for a couple months, so I'll have to look over which ones are ready for publishing and which ones still need work. I'm aiming to upload some of these within a week or so!

This was from the recent Q1 earnings call for 2013. It looks like both Titan and Blizzard Allstars are being planned for 'Long Term', which probably means they won't be seeing the light this year.

I'm back after a long hiatus. Too much to do IRL, wish I had a time machine.

The Orc and Skeleton still need to be optimized in startools. I really need to finish those models, but I keep getting sidetracked with other stuff to do.

I've been workin on my first attempt on a portrait model. Still a work in progress, but it's getting close to where I want it now.

O_o Kerrigan and Zeratul were never friends. She killed his Matriarch, and he hates her for it. He allows her to live because she's key to the survival of the universe against the Hybrids, but they're by no means on good terms. They even fought in WoL.

Broodwar was slap full of cliches.... Actually all of blizzard games are, they base about 95% of all of their stories since wc2 on pop culture.

The african renegade, the redneck commander, The clint eastwood main good guy, The Badguy, you love to hate, but there is really little reason to hate him.

I meant cliche plot devices, not character stereotypes. This is in reference to "why do so many people complain about "cliché", "overused" or "unoriginal" plot devices?".

    Quote from Photoloss: Go

You mean like this or this? Keep in mind I'm not saying the SCII story isn't rather straightforward, but that's a different concept than "cliché". "Overused" is very bad as a standalone criticism because it attacks the most popular option through nothing but its sheer quantity, rather than the actual content. Turn that around: Said option had to be "good" in some way to become popular in the first place. I do agree with your sentiment that the plot of SC/BW was more complex and convoluted, however this is not the type of complaint I meant to oppose.

I'm starting to think we're debating semantics. When people are saying the plot is 'cliche', it's more likely that they mean the plot is predictable, not because cliches are being used. This is the basis of my argument, because like you said anything can be a trope so it shouldn't be a shock when something is presented as 'unoriginal'. It almost becomes a non issue.

The SC2 storyline is still very formulaic in that you know what certain outcomes will be simply because of foreshadowing. SC1 never had prophecies or clear cut goals, which left you wondering where the whole plot was heading. Even with Brood War, Kerrigan's goal was never to gain control of the swarm and become the ultimate badass, she started out simply wanting to retain her freedom after the death of the Overmind. Her bid for power came when her goals of survival and control became one and the same. This is also what made the plot twists feel more natural. The story wasn't being told to you as much as it was unfolding before you.

If SC2 were a new franchise on its own, it wouldn't have the same expectations as it does now. The problem is it follows in the footsteps of an elaborate space opera in the fashion of a soap opera.

And finally, why do so many people complain about "cliché", "overused" or "unoriginal" plot devices? Let's face it, with the amount of fictional content produced so far, any reasonable plot has been done over and over, even the "good and original" stories can be picked apart in retrospect. Take any story, open up a related category on TVTropes, and start counting.

The charm of the Starcraft story was that it broke the cliches and the tropes and it came up with plot devices that weren't outwardly predictable. The good guys didn't get the girl at the end and the bad guys were people you helped into power. It was Game of Thrones.

Now you look at Starcraft 2's storyline, and it's straight forward hand-fed story that doesn't really have any major plot twists in the way. It focuses on character relationships that aren't strongly explained, and we're left to question what their motivations are. I felt that HOTS did better at fixing the relationships by introducing characters with simpler motives. This makes telling the linear story more easy to follow, but it becomes more predictable as well. All plot twists are spoon fed to us, leaving it feeling empty.

This isn't to say the story in SC2 is bad or flawed in a technical sense. It isn't exactly comparable to the Phantom Menace. Whether you liked the writing and dialogue or not, that's purely subjective. SC2 is more like your typical hollywood blockbuster. I'm not a big fan of the story itself, but it's nonetheless enjoyable. It just lacks the depth and complexity of the SC/Broodwar days, which is sadly something we have to accept.

That is sweet! Though the design looks more like a regular plane than a gyrocopter without the big propellor on the top, I really dig the bulky design.

If I make a gyrocopter, I'll probably be designing it more like the Warcraft 2 version. More Warhammer less Steampunk.

I have my reservations with Blizzard Allstars. I doesn't seem like they have any Devs behind it who value the complexity that drives the genre. Simplicity may be a good thing to bring in a casual market, but MOBAs aren't as much about drawing a crowd as much as keeping one, and I don't see Blizzard Allstars in its current incarnation being able to do that. No jungling, no item recipes and streamlining player roles into the Tank/DPS/Support/Siege would seem to offer less sandboxing.

A part of the charm of playing MOBAs is the huge character rosters and complexity within each hero. It offers up limitless play. Blizz Allstars seems to be set up to have linear play, where your role is pretty much defined and you're not really given tools to explore different ways to play your character. It's not like your Support character can get items that turns him into a caster/nuker, or a Tank with items/auras that supports the team with healing. I don't see that happening when I see hero designs like Warfield. I don't think any item/ability build will make him play any role other than long-range dps.

I still anticipate the game though, and I want to see how Blizzard's design permeates the genre. Even if the game is a bust, I'm sure there are things to learn from that may end up being used in other MOBAs; or features from other MOBAs that eventually make it into BAS. Blizzard might not be the best innovators, but they are the best Iterators.

I kind of liked that Heart gave throwbacks and did a lot to try to fix the gaping holes in WoL, especially with tying in SC/BW. We get nods to Fenix, we get Infested Stukov, we get Duran, we get an explanation for evil Queen of Blades, we even get some recognition with Tosh/Nova after the events. I still wish it was a less hand-held and predictable. Warfield and Duran's death were expected, I would have rather they pulled a Game of Thrones and used death and plot twists in a more shocking way instead. That's what I liked about the original SC1 plot with Kerrigan and with Mengsk.
