I'm opposed to the expensive microphone idea. You can make do with a cheap lav mic but its gonna cost you time in processing after recording. But if you want to reduce time in processing, an expensive mic will do you well.
If you really wanna go all out on expensive mics get an AT2020 and a Focusrite interface. Focusrite being the cheapest, trusted, and durable interfaces in the market. AT2020 being one that sounds good, cheap, and durable in its own market.
If you're just doing it maybe earn a couple of extra bucks, a samson c01u should suit you well.
If you're just doing it for the heck of it, those 20 dollar usb mics from ebay is enough.
Duly noted but I don't think that I'll change my format for now or in the far future as this setup is what my clients prefer over minimalist effects. Vile Egression or Minimalist, there should be a balance between filter and clarity and I believe when it comes to dealing with the protoss and the zerg voices, and all of my clients aswell believe, that I have achieved a perfect equilibrium to it.
I disagree with your second paragraph though. Ideally, you will apply a minimum of two filters. BUT then layer the initial compressed unfiltered recording on top of all the filters to give clarity a boost. You should try that out. Works wonders! It got me pitched in alot of roles when I did that one.
Ah, if you guys are referring to my post, I apologize. It was around 2AM when I typed that and I guess it slipped my mind. But if not, I'll gladly post the process of how I achieved that voice regardless. Might be of great help to everyone!
The Program I used is Adobe Audition CS6.
Zealot Filter:
After recording and cleaning up the sample, make a second copy and lower said copy's pitch by 10%.
Mix the original and the second copy together then apply a chorus effect of your choosing. I find that a chorus with tight delay and spread with a thickness of 2 voices is perfect.
Compress, normalize, then add the reversed reverb effect.
Dragoon Filter:
After recording and cleaning up the sample, make a second copy and lower said copy's pitch by 10%.
Mix the original and the second copy together.
Apply an Echo filter with a Decay of 66%, Delay of 31 miliseconds, and the Echo Volume at 70%.
Apply a second Echo Filter with a Decay of 73%, Delay of 2.4 miliseconds, and an Echo Volume of 61%.
Compress, normalize, then add the reversed reverb effect.
You may need to do a second round of clean up since the compression might make the dithering noise louder to the point that its audible. Or if compression isn't your thing, you can just skip that and head on to normalizing it and adding the reverb.
Greetings all! Thought I'd try my luck in getting my name out there in the community by sharing my skills here.
As the title suggest, I'm a voice actor with 9 years of experience. Due to my low pitched voice, I am often sought after for trailer type of voice over roles and sometimes antagonist roles. Though I can most certainly adapt to any role. Aside from trailers, I've also voiced for games, animations, movies, and even silly stuff. Aside from voice acting, an add-on to this skill is that I have competent knowledge on filtering using plugins and vocoders to make them distorted and artificial, making them well suited for sci-fi or fantasy. However, I can only do so much as 10 sentences per week for each separate project as I have paying commissions that I have to prioritize.
Although my voice and SFX services are free exclusively to StarCraft related projects to some degree, my music isn't. But I've been told that my prices for music production is more than satisfactory. Currently, I am offering this service for $30 per minute for unlimited instruments, unlimited revisions, and a legal document detailing that you are free to use the song in whatever project (even commercial ones) you deem fit as long as attribution is cited.
I also dabble on sound effects. I have a decent understanding on foley artistry. And if foley artistry isn't something you're looking for, then with the help of my 28gb SFX library and a plethora of knowledge on mixing and mastering SFX, I can get you that really specific sound effect you're looking for. This one you can get for free without thinking about money!
I'm not entirely sure if the Vanguard Leader is a zealot but I imagined him as a zealot regardless. You definitely got the aggressiveness of the zealot but it sort of lacked with the filters. Then again, filters are basically aesthetics but it does help to improve upon them.
Your ambassador was spot on, though. I really liked that one. It has that leader kind of tone to his voice which is very suiting for a protoss and an ambassador.
Did a dragon character for some indie game. Just a bunch of gibberish with lots of pronunciations taken from TES dragonspeak. Not entirely sure about the legality of that but the team reassured me. Also not entirely sure what it means but I'm supposed to be a very old sagey dragon.
https://instaud.io/sCt
EDIT:
Here's something substantial. I'm trying to make a soundtrack for this game but I'm short on ideas. Its supposed to be industrial with lots of heavy digitized percussion and some samples of metal clanging. Maybe you guys can give me an idea on how to progress in the song.
https://instaud.io/private/a0490058018cd680a47e504c50b354de85a1d8ee
EDIT: Apparently, your mic is doable to do some decent quality voice acting. I went and edited your voice. Did lots of clean up and simply applied the filter I commonly use for the protoss.
Other than that, I had to increase the bass to give it that oomph. Lowered the treble to make it sound less harsh in sibilant letters.
Two layers. One is unedited and the other own has its pitch lowered by 20%. Mixed them both together, applied a chorus filter, compressed, EQ'd, normalized, and added the necessary reverb embellishments. Protoss voices are a whole lot simpler since they require less aggresive editing. Except if you're doing an archon, ofcourse. :P
This one was for a spectral ghost thingy for a skyrim mod. Its a simple one. Not much going on there except for a chorus filter then the usual EQing and compression.
https://instaud.io/hPS
One of the antagonists for said mod. I tried to lower the volume of the filter so that it'd sound more natural. Making it suited for a fantasy setting.
https://instaud.io/hPW
I tried to go for an organic necron sound. Doing necrons are easy but I gave this one some creative freedom.
https://instaud.io/hPV
Its basically three layers of voice. I copied the recording three times and layered them together but all of them pitched down to -3 semitones. On the first layer, I flanged it harshly. I lowered the second layer's pitch by 10% and added it its own light flange. The third layer is a copy of the unaltered second layer but its pitched was raised by 20%.
I then mixed them altogether, did some EQing, boosting low and highs, compressed, normalized, and gave it a little bit of reverb and echo. After that, I placed the signature reverse reverb that we all know from zerg/protoss voices then reversed it back to normal.
Zerg voices are known to be cunningly aggressive. So its a good idea to sound like you're plotting someone's murder in a methodical but angry way. :P
Used a cheapo Genius MIC-01c Lapel mic. I used adobe audition for the software. Hope this helps!
My Audition lines for a Terran Commander for Antioch Remastered. I know I said this was going to be just for Toss and Zerg but it doesn't hurt to throw in a little extra! :P
More voice filters! All of these except the Moloch Line is for the Vortex of the Void campaign.
1) Used for a Stalker as a campaign briefing sort of thing
"Our Scouts report strange energy activities around the ruins of the temple. We have to figure out what Mal'Zar is doing."
2) Unused Zealot Voice
"These fools seek to defile the holy grounds of our Master! Slay them all, my bretheren!"
3) My Audition line for Moloch for Antioch Remastered
"Aside from a few scattered settlements and outposts, we are the only remaining survivors on Aiur. This temple, this paradise was the last of Jepok's legacy."
4) Immortal Filter. Sounds a bit more like a Dragoon.
"Pathetic Woman! You will never foil my master's plan! You have already lost!"
5) Really big bad voice filter used for the main antagonist of Narudek's Campaign.
"Pathetic Templar! You are like an insect compared to the power of the Dead God! Ancient Guardians! Slay them All!"
6) Zealot-type Hero. Supposed to be really old
"Mal'Zar is inside of this ancient chamber. I can sense his power flowing from this cave."
7) This one's supposed to be Zeratul. I know I don't sound like him but if you know someone that can sound exactly like him, I'd be honestly surprised!
"The Zerg hive cluster is no more! Now we can focus our forces on those guardians!"

@Johan_Brodd: Go
This is good! But I'd throw in a layer for good measure! Throw in ALL the layers! >:D

I did my own take with filters that I think would sound great if you applied them on your voice. https://instaud.io/private/2ff530eb76d33dc7e504a4436f77c7d1fd5507b1 https://instaud.io/private/0d6edec0ed25b0856a8754d57097de24c34071c9
Same with the dragoon. It sounded like he's not inside a metal casing. Some really tight echo layered on top of a slightly loose yet still tight echo might do the trick. https://instaud.io/private/6eb1596a039f795b11863d4f36f38aa029303b23
