posted a message on Looking for lead mapper: Homestuck AoS

We're heading for the original kids and trolls being playable eventually, at the very least. In terms of any other details, well, it's your map!

Welcome aboard! We'll be discussing initial design details in the related thread on the mspa forums.

Anyone else who's interested in this, feel free to pitch in.

Hope you guys don't mind if I bump this?

Finding a spare lead mapper who doesn't already have his/her own design idea is certainly asking a lot. However, I was serious about those advantages. You'd have enough outside help on the assets, design, and balancing of this map to end up with something really slick.

You would obviously still have full charge and direction over the map. Have you ever had any design ideas, ways to mix up the AoS formula, that you've thought of trying? Go for it! The gameplay is yours. We simply would provide you with a theme, and tons of support in helping your map fit that theme spectacularly.

If you wanted to make an AoS but didn't have a solid setting down, consider going for this. There are only advantages!

...except maybe the disadvantage of eventually having to read Homestuck all the way through. But we consider that a perk. :)

posted a message on Looking for lead mapper: Homestuck AoS

The MSPA community has started tossing around ideas for a Homestuck AoS-type map. If you do not know what Homestuck is, and aren't willing to read up on it a little, feel free to stop reading. :)

The warring factions would be Prospit and Derse, with associated hero-characters thereof. Fairly straightforward AoS fare, though the community has plenty of twists to offer. ("AoS" refers to a map in the same style as DotA, HoN, or LoL, for the uninitiated - though this doesn't need to be nearly as ambitious.)

    What they need:

    • At least one SC2 mapper interested in the idea, particularly one who's had a hand in / taken a stab at an AoS before (but not required).

    What they can provide you:

    • Character/ability designs
    • Neat design ideas to fit a Homestuck game, make it unique
    • Models/Animations
    • Icons
    • Art assets
    • Terrain textures
    • Music
    • Voice Acting
    • Dozens and dozens of willing playtesters
    • Ungodly amounts of praise

The MSPA community is very active, and full of artists, modelers, and programmers of all (mostly non-SC2) stripes. You would have plenty of help, if it's in the name of Homestuck. All they need is at least one lead mapper, someone to form the core of the team!

(Most project discussion would likely take place in the forums, where you can interface with the MSPA community, but the mapping-team discussion and map itself could easily be hosted/promoted here.)

Feel free to pick your own team, or apply for minor positions. They would enjoy any number of people willing to work on this project!

    So, any takers? :)

posted a message on Cruiser Command type map, I Need a team

I'm kind of a fan of good design practices, namely knowing when to accept input and why it's being given. It applies to innovation of all kinds, whether composing a product to be sent to market or designing a game to be played on battle.net.

I was linked to this thread by Dark.Revenant before you even replied, and was independently startled by your actions, which went against said concepts so blatantly that others called you out on it.

You introduce your amateur map concept to one of the largest reservoirs of skilled mapmakers for Starcraft 2, get amazing advice from one who's considered the concept for years, and then... Jegus, I'm lmao here.

Who wants to help make some equipment models + weapon effects for DarkRevenant's concept, instead of helping this "intelligent fellow" with his map?

posted a message on Failing at SC2

Dark.Revenant has extensive WC3 mapping experience, knows how both that game and SC2 work inside and out, makes quite polished maps, and is now dying inside because his APM isn't good enough. Big friggin' deal.

Being good at a complex game teaches you key things about it that help you mod, certainly. That, however, is the general case. As long as you know how everything works and can tell an individual player's options in different scenarios, you can mod. As long as you know how terrain chokepoints and resource/item placement affects players' options, you can map. As long as you know how damage stacks up and subtle differences in attack speed and armor type can turn the tide of battle on its head, you can balance. Getting pro at SC2 will definitely help mappers realize all these things. However, it doesn't mean that one cannot know these things and suck at the same time, especially if one has *years of WC3 mapping experience* and the wits that general game design/modding experience gives you.

And it certainly doesn't mean you can't make a decent EVOLVES clone. I mean, jebus, you don't have to be able to micro zerglings through a swarm of carriers to remake something that started as a simple-ass SC1 map.
