posted a message on VERY Mysterious bank bug... (Solved)

Thanks for your info. I obviously know very little about the foundations of computing so I'm curious about anything that would help me understand this bug better and obviously I'd like to avoid any serious and/or permanent hardware failures.

The bug appeared on two more of our testing laptops and I ran the same procedure to get them working properly again. The bug has yet to reappear on the original machine. I'll run the chkdsk again to see if any other problem errors have appeared. Luckily these computers don't hold any important data that isn't uploaded regularly.

I had to scan and clean the hard drive. While in safe mode, using the Command Prompt, I entered "sfc /scannow" to check the integrity of the windows files. It indicated that not all corrupted files could be fixed.

I then entered "chkdsk /f" and it cleaned what needed to be fixed and the bug was no more...

I suspect this occurred because the file location and or route became "well worn." We run this map on this machine multiple times per day and it accesses the bank folder a many times each play through. Still, very weird.

The bank related triggers are distributed throughout the program and it's pretty large (369 MB). It records entries into the banks banks frequently throughout the game and saves them every time.

I thought about permission settings as well, but I can't imagine how they would allow this kind of progression. I assume settings issues would be an all or none issue.

I'm running a research study using games made in SC2. Everything has been going great until just recently when one of my games stopped writing it's banks. We use the banks to record data from the game for later analysis. The game in question records 6 bank files per game session. The weird thing is that bug gets progressively worse. First it only writes 4 banks, then 3, then 2, then just 1, then none.

The above picture was actually taken after I had thought I had fixed it, but it deteriorated similarly the first time it appeared.

    Other weirdness:

-This game has been working properly for months and nothing that I'm aware of has changed on this machine.

-There are several other machines running the exact same game file without issue (i.e. no patch conflicts or anything).

-Using a fresh copy or older copies of the game does nothing.

-Other maps still write banks just fine. I ran a test map that just spit out 8 bank files, no problem.

-Uninstall/reinstall of SC2 did nothing. Uninstall + delete all associated folders, reinstall, I thought worked but it basically just reset the bug (see pic.)

My guess was that it's some kind of corruption at the folder level or maybe a random hardware failure but I wouldn't know. Basically my last resort is to reinstall the OS. It's got to be something on the machine side. What kinds of programs or settings could possibly be interfering in such a specific way? Is there any way to change where the banks are written to a folder other than the banks folder?
