posted a message on epic MMORTS custom map idea

I always really wished there was a an option for a little less serious/ more RPG multiplayer option in SC2. Does anyone remember the old galactic conquest multiplayer option in Starwar battle front? and has anyone ever played one of the browser based MMORTS games?

well i was thinking how cool it would be to have a custom game that worked on this concept. the idea would be that each time you play a game on this map its saves your finishing army numbers economy, and tech level. at the start of each game there is a loading screen where you can choose units that you want to start the game with from the bank that you have built up. Example say you win a game and end the game with 200 supply of zealots. the next game you play ur total army is 200 zealots in the loading screen and if you wanted you could start that game with all 200 zealots, but if you lose that game then all those zealots are now gone and you wont be able to use them at the start of the following game. This would also apply to tech structures and resource. if you end a game with every tech building then all those buildings are available to you and can be placed by u in the base during the loading screen. But for the buildings you only can access these when you play on the same planet(ill explain this later). again if you choose to pull resources or tech structures from ur bank at the start of the game then any u spend will be lost AND if you lose the game then all the money you had is lost and added to ur opponents purse.

Also, in the loading screen players will choose from a number of planets, each planet offers different bonuses/obstacles (all high yield mins, or all high yeild gas, lava raise and fall stuff like in campaign or solar flares like in campaign. some maps could even have access to nuetral structures like the Laser Drill.) furthermore some planets will give you bonuses even when not playing on them if you have a colony on that planet.(ie won or survived till end of a game on that planet) possible examples of this could be free scans, nuclear strikes, mercenary call down.

the way games would play out would be for all players to start out as free for all, all maps would be massive size and players would vote at launch for which map they wanted to play on. game could be easily played with 1v1 or up to max number of people. (some sort of balance would be needed so that games played with less than the max players or where players all just tech up and mass rescources would be discouraged im open to idea of how best to reduce that kind of abuse). when the game starts all players are given a minute or two to decide what of their built up forces they want to risk in this game and place buildings etc. after that the game will play like a normal free for all, there is the option to form alliances, which is encouraged espeacially for smaller players. your goal is to be part of the winning alliance. additionally players can withdraw from the game at any point and save their units and income they made but they will lose their coloney on that planet so next game they wont have the option to place buildings if that planet is chosen and they wont get any of the universal bonuses from that planet.

so a way a lot of newer players may have to play is joining the game and building up and trying to join an alliance otherwise they will just try to survive long enough and defend themselves long enough to just withdraw with as big a force and economy as possible. where as bigger players will work to form alliances and survive till the end so that they can get/keep the planatary bonuses and their buildings.

so the idea is to kind of create sense of a persistent universe and that you are a persistent force. the game will combine some level of normal multiplayer strategy in that the core of the game is melee game, but it mixes in a lot of RPG elements. it should feel like playing major epic campaign missions except where now every faction is human controlled. Over the course of any game big players may bully the weaker ones possibly even forcing the player to pay them for protection or just to not be killed right off the bat. weaker players will have to work together to attempt to either just all survive long enough to make it out of the game with a decent force/purse, or possibly even try to kill off the biggest player. this will lead to important choices even for players who have large banked forces and resources as to whether or not they would prefer to just come into a game with nothing so they dont lose a major chunk of their army , but then they risk losing their colony if they have one on that planet.

To make the game fair i think it should be hard to evacuate troops and funds, otherwise people will alway bring their whole army out and just withdraw if its looks bad, so in order to withdraw anything that you choose to start with you have to load it into a shuttle(which will appear different depending on what race you play) the shuttle must take off without being destroyed for you to keep ur resources and only the units in the shuttle will be saved as part of ur cumulative army.

Additionally i think it would be cool if there were universal events where randomly in matches crazy stuff would happen. Like those Zerg pods would rain down throughout the map and suddenly all players would have to fight off constant zerg attacks. or a protoss planet cracker would warp in and start destroying everything,

Raynor, or any of the campaign characters could come on screen asking for help bc he is being chased down by something and you and the other player have to band together to save him or join whatever force is hunting him.

likewise you may encounter a dominion fleet which attempts to kill everyone on the map.

these events would be largely random so it would add addition reason for players to be wary of bringing all their forces to the table bc these events would be triggered only if a certain sized player develops and with probable increased concentration of attention aimed at the triggering players.

what do you guys think would this be something you would play? As i understand the custom system everything i proposed is possible. I am not sure i could handle a map project this size, at least not alone but I thought i would pitch it to see if there would be any interest

TL:DR- epic persistent MMORTS that could be made within the current custom game system. what do you think?

posted a message on possible fix to the popularity system.

TL:DR -So I posted the following in general chat on the starcraft 2 forums and someone linked me here. I browsed around a bit and I think this site is basically exactly what I was suggesting except for one part. I think addition of an area where people can actively post what games they are wanting to play game name and all with a link to that map highlighted in ur maps section. this would serve a function just like the old wc3 custom game selection was. please read the rest of the post if you want it explained better.

" a major issue with sc2 for a lot of people is the problem with the custom game popularity system. I really am hoping that blizzard is working on solutions to this issue but at the same time im worried it may not come.

In that sense i want to pitch a possible community based fix to the current problem. Why don't we make a website whose sole focus is finding and spotlighting great customs. the website would break down the games by type and would weekly dive through the pages in groups of like 8 so that they can just test maps. they then post videos of the ones they loved in each genre, new spotlights every week for each genre.

additionally on a separate area there would be an area where people who are currently wanting to play a game that is not popular enough to fill on its own can post that they are looking for others to play with them and link the video/game description from the spotlight pages. this functions kinda like an improved version of the old wc3 custom game area. where people post their game name and if you want to play customs instead of just doing what people do now and joining a popular game u can alt tab open up this website and browse what is currently being hosted, plus u can even watch a video and get a run down on wth the game is about to see if you even want to play.

eventually this site could evolve into a place for map makers to post their big projects and get feedback. plus allow for things like ban list for players who troll games. obvsiously its not the fix we would like, IE have blizzard basically make this exact thing built in, but if there is enough community support it seem like this would be something that could revitalize the map making community and maybe provide us with the custom games we all expected to see by now."

posted a message on map idea theorycraft

I came up with this idea after all the tons of time spent creeping general forums. There is a lot of theories out there about awsome strats and i really enjoy coming up with strats but my macro and micro skills are terrible bc though i have tons of time to think about SC2 and watch it I dont really have any time to play it and practice at it.

In that spirit i was wondering how hard it would be to program an AI to macro for you. basically it will make sure your always making workers, and it will make sure you never get supply blocked. there will be type commands that can make its excute certain BOs at a master level.

also adding in certain micro commands as abilities like a stutter step button on the marine and maradar that when you click it and then click another location all the units selected would stutter step to that location.

zerg queens would larva inject perfectly, mules drops would never be missed and chrono would always be used.

There would have to be some sort of abiltiy that allowed u to interrupt the AI for things like macro mechanics incase u want to chrono something different or scan instead of mule. zerg queen could be set to auto lay creep tumors and those tumors would auto spread. mutas would have a button to magic box them.

I am not sure about things like storm, emp, fungal, and FF but if it was possible to have a single button command to make those more automatic that would be nice too.

the whole goal here is to allow a bronze player to play at a diamond level without really doing anything. Then he is free to concentrate on unit compositions special tatical choices and trying to perform things that he has only theory crafted in the past.

It could be set up so that you can play vs specific BOs and standard meta that is programmed into an AI or it can be set up for two players to fight each other also with the option for a player to disable all the AI stuff and do it manually so potentially a bronze player could play on even ground with his diamond friend.

what do you guys think, is this level of AI programming possible? if so i think this would be awsome just as a fun game to play and as a great learning tool for players to see first hand what they should be doing to play at a higher level.

TL:DR- can a custom be made that uses AI programing to allow a bronze player to play like a diamond by letting the comp do all the macro and micro for him?
