We don't have to do much selling. The arcade system works takes time but works. Those that think it doesn't just don't want to admit that their game just isn't that good.

Oh, that's why everyone thinks the open games and default popularity lists are garbage. I thought it was because titled lobbies made it easier to find like minded players and popularity lists kill diversity.

It probably has nothing to do with the lack of kick and ban features for hosts either. I mean, sure, playing with a jerk sucks but the game would totally die otherwise. At least the map editor is highly approachable to its computer science illiterate user base.

I like this map. It captured the strategic custom map feel from previous Blizzard RTS that seems to be otherwise lacking on Battle.net 2.0.

I'd love to take a look at it. The one I'm working on right now (only in an assisting role) is a lot like Star Strikers.

I actually helped with the original map you're referring to - it wasn't my cup of tea but I can see why a lot of people liked it.

There's a few reasons I never got into it but if you're planning on remaking something similar I think you'd be best served keeping what was exceptional about that map (symmetry, promotions, strategic distribution of resources) and addressing why some people didn't like it (e.g. very little of the map ever being under serious contention, very little combat strategy compared to the level of tactics involved, slow bleeding out of the enemy to win). A lot of the problems the map faced were a function of its medium (brood war) but some were a function of design too, melee base units (zealots) often lead to stagnation/border build ups unless the battles are scripted or the map lends itself to mobility. I know you could buy ranged units and use this to mix the battles up but that only exacerbated the other major issue, which was early victories or losses snowballing unless the teams were very savvy.

I think if you appreciated that map you definitely would have appreciate the Strategy War genre and would be well served to borrow some aspects from those maps, albeit they had their shortcomings too (not sure how you'd incorporate more combat strategy but using ranged base units and open fields with many different capture points definitely did it for those maps, so perhaps something in that vane). Another route is what Blood & Iron or Age of Rifles did and simply allow armies to be mobile through transports or speed but city/point capture would commensurately difficult either through a garrison spawn or some other mechanic that would allow for retaliation/defense and thus mitigate any sort behind the lines cat and mouse.

Oh and don't get me wrong I really did enjoy that map but only when both sides were skilled and equally matched - but I guess that's a lot harder when playing public matches.

Edit: I don't play much anymore but if you want I'd be up to help consult/give advice if you need it - I made a few decent maps in Brood War (Snowball Wars and some Sniper/Diplo stuff) and in the Galaxy Editor I started on this but ended up shelving it: http://diplomunion.com/showthread.php?9764-Blood-amp-Iron-Europe-1870

So I know a bit about design, dynamics and balance.

    cavalry

something not unlike that - either with a sword or with a gun

it would definitely be useful to the community.

Edit: on a side note, how much easier will these patch 1.5 updates make model proliferation for starcraft 2 mapping?

Hi, I'm looking for a generic-type light cavalry unit that would be appropriate for the time periods between say 1700 to 1900.

Something like what Pauly turned Tony Soprano into in that portrait of a horse in The Sopranos. +1 point if you get the reference

In general I think there's a strong demand for models that could be used in historical scenarios (as these have been very popular in brood war and warcraft).

while retouching the caspian/white seas i had to cut and paste some terrain. sometimes when you do that you end up with glitched water outside the designated 256x256. it doesn't really affect the map at all and you can get rid of it pretty easily (i did on the version i have here).

if anyone's still interested in using this terrain for a strategic war/diplomacy map let me know. i'm busy with school right now but if i have the time i'd be up to help - especially with regards to game dynamics and balance.

Hey there, been working on a map but between work and school I'm not going to have the time to finish it so I just decided that instead of letting all my work go to waste I'd let all of you have a chance to put it to good use. I've made a pretty accurate orthographic projection of Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor... enjoy: http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/europe-256x256/files/2-europe-256x256/ Europe

posted a message on Help with type of condition

    Hi there,

In Brood War you could make it a condition that at least one type of unit is in a location. This was useful if you wanted a trigger to fire if say any enemy unit is in a given location and only if.

Is there an equivalent in StarCraft 2's GUI triggers that makes it a condition that a unit type (not an individual unit) is in a given location. Or is there some way to accomplish this through secondary triggers and events? I'm aware there's a function for a unit entering/leaving a location, that's not really what I want.
