posted a message on Hey guys, performance question in here !

So, if you create a 256x256 'Epic' map does this also means only 'high-end' systems can play it due the bad engine we always get standard with awesome Blizzard games ?

The map will have several different sections, arena's you may call them. Units would be 99% trigger based, so the wouldn't be loaded initially. Arena's will be 'cutted' out by using forced camera's like most maps do.

But my question is, should we always aim for the 'smallest' map suiting your needs. Or doesn't it matter all that much ? Basically : Is a 256x256 map with Terrain/Cliff/Doodads a pain for lower systems. Or shouldn't this be a concern and the engine surprises us ?

    Thanks in advance.

    http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Download / Install / Run it. Do so on a 2 weekly basis. It removes all the useless stuff like Cookies and Temporary Memory files etc. Nothing you saved in question, but stuff like if you surf on facebook it saves the pictures to load them up faster etc. If you never done a format or CClean recently, this should help out hopefully.

This isn't a virus or addware. You have my word ;)

Hey Burne_, I played the map with you today on Bnet as 'Dresnia'. For some reason my nickname is Zyff wich used to be my WoW nickname on this old Curse account, I'll look into changing this somehow :s

So here's some stuff I suggest, please note this isn't meant too come over like a jackass bossing you around. As stated before, BRAINSTORM !

The map really showed to me you are willing too put allot of effort into it by making custom weapons, custom vehicles and such stuff. But people don't want too think when they boot a Custom map, they want instant easy too step into action at a low cost of user input. I think I told this before on the IRC channel but you could consider just sticking too 3 weapons for now. You could make it more complex later on when the map gets people playing it you know.

Weapon 1 : Your spammable one, like a machine gun something. A rocket or 4-5 but no auto-aim future. So it wouldn't really do much unless the person is really good or gets lucky hits. This weapon should cost you roughly 10-15% of your mana, but only a 2 or 3 second cooldown

Weapon 2 : Your main weapon, a auto-aim strong hitting rocket. Would do about 10-20% damage on a player, but costs around 35-40% of your mana and has a rather long cooldown like 10 or even 15 seconds

Weapon 3 : A landmine, like you already have. Dealing about 40-60% damage, but make it so it doesn't last until run over. Make it last like 25% of the time it takes for 1 lap, and perhaps even make it so you can shoot it down with your spammable weapon so experienced players can get more stuff done

About the terrain, I know you stated this wasn't your biggest concern just yet. But try too 'Eyecandy' it up if that term is still used :-)

And last but not least, fix the 'sound issues' you have. Should be more then doable, and don't be afraid too ask others I'm sure someone around here knows how too do so properly !

Oh and about the 'wall stuck bugging', I guess we can just get it out by proper testing it over and over again and tweaking those regions around a bit.

(Yet again sorry if I sound like a jackass, I'm really here too make friends and support the community guys)

I vote yes. Seeing I'm strongly considering a comeback to the editor lifestyle I would really appreciate this stuff and be a viewer and hell, eventually a caster who knows !

But you should know who you are allowing too cast though, not sure if wolf stated the same but, too prevent 'bad methods' to get viral. From what I remember designing stuff isn't THAT hard, or triggering. But doing it correctly for the best performance / bugless is what makes or brakes you.

I don't think the control is the issue, the issue would be people copying your top selling maps for free I guess. But yeah, I've got something in the back of my head that isnt on SC2 yet currently so I'll give it a shot :)

Yeah exactly. I would love to get some stuff going on but from what I have seen there's just the 'popular' top 10 maps and they been the same since release kinda :/ So it's gotta be very very hard to get your work up there.

It's not like you lose by making a map. But it doesn't feel motivating if you know no-one would ever see or even play your map right ? Please tell me my idea is wrong.

Hello everyone. None of you will actually know me so this may look pretty weird for most of you.

Back in the days I started creating maps for 'Medal of Honor : Allied Assault ', that being a FPS. I also worked on project for CoD2. After a while I picked up Age of Mythology. All these games I got pretty far and found some wonderful people and thereby worked on the most amazing projects.

After a break due the games getting old I picked up Warcraft 3, but the scene was so over populated and everything was already done if you know what I mean.

Now, I've been playing Starcraft 2 for a while and booted the Editor occasionally too mess about you could say. If I may say the RTS editor is easier to step in too, but still has the needed complexity towards more high-end based custom (game mode/Mod) maps.

Also, seen some rumours about Blizzard planning or at-least looking into the option of 'selling' custom maps made by the community. Not that I would only want to get back for the money, but would be awesome to do it for a living right ?

TL;DR So tell me guys, is it worth it to get back into making custom maps ? If so, I'm looking too make friends ! I hope this thread doesn't get over arrogant like I'm the best out there or so, but we could state I got some experience behind me with editors... Thanks for reading, no need too troll <3
