posted a message on Recommended Terrain for Bound?

Couldn't agree more with Mozared you need a clear contrast that will immediantly make the player think "something iss going to happen if I step off of this onto that" and also a higher contrast will enable the player to disdinguish the difference fast which in most maps like these (possible yours) the camera and units are always moving, which with a high contrast will assist the eyes improving reaction speeds.

On the artistic side you may want to pick to contrasting colours from the colour wheel, if you haven't used one of those two colours opposite the wheel go together attractively. An example using warcraft textures would have been grass with lava, Red and Green contrast atractively making the map which is often hard to decorate a little more pleasant.

You may want to consider colour-blindness however if your choosing colours as some people cannot easily disdinguish the difference between red-greens or other colours.

My recommendation would be a bright coloured texture against a dark desaturated texture:
    Korhal Concrete(Korhal) = Safe,
    Char Lava Cracks(Char) = Danger

    @Marikh7: Go

Befouler sounds, Devious >:) and makes me feel its like a deciever style unit. Also if I havent add Deciever to your mental list of applicable names.
My tip to naming units is just think of their roles and what the emotions you want the player to feel towards the unit, you could name a rabbit Grishgin and it would sound more like a possesed rabbit capable of unnatural powers or you could call it a stereotypical cutesy name like Alice. If you still need more impulse on your decision invole the units abilities and traits, a Lizardman with poisonous spells could be called a Venommancer for example and that gives the player an immediate idea of the style of play that unit employs.

Although try not to overthink it ^^

ok heres a list for you:

    • Bloater
    • Dementor
    • Roamer
    • Absorber
    • Bulker
    • Hunger
    • Whopper
    • Desecrator
    • Devourer
    • Digestor
    • Engorger
    • Decomposor
    • Lacerator

I sort of assumed it would be large with these names and mostly expanded on its largeness and appetite but some are good for almost any zerg unit. If any of these helped just a simple thanks is all I need. :)

I can't seem to upload anything so I can't show you but I can tell you they are both near the middle.

    @Mozared: Go

Sorry about that Mozared, wasn't trying to spoil it. I just had a hard time telling if that was actually a marine or not in Victiln's lol.

So yesterday I decided to make a playable map for this WTE since it seems more of a game. However I did some Terrain work in the map so it still fits the case, but it can seem cluttered at times.

    It's called Where's Wally?

The host chooses from 3 difficulties, Easy, Medium or Hard. Each one increases in time limit, size and number of decoys.
Randomized decoys, buildings and Waldo placement so each time you play it will be different.
Has a timer to see how long it takes you.
Challenge others in a race or play solo to beat your best time.

Easy has a 2 minute time limit.
Medium has a 6 minute time limit.
Hard has a 8 minute time limit.

Depending on the randomization it could be a lot shorter or a bit longer and also depending on how many people you are playing with.

Just search for Wally or the whole title in Battle.net Create Custom Game to play it! And if someone wants to make a YouTube of the gameplay to show it that would be appreciated.

    Enjoy!

I made a map like that for warcraft 3, I think it was aprooved and put on the hive workshop, except then again there are some assholes on there from time to time.

Ok all done, I improvised for the bridges because there arent many models available to use for a napoleon theme map, but you will notice:

    - Cobble reinforced roads (just dirt with rocks in them to resist erosion)
    - The city is just walls at the moment, if you like it I can go into full detail and craft up some houses and etc, space is limited.
    - No supply posts as its 2 in the morning and ill get those done if you like it.
    - Waterfall and mountain spring, I wasn't sure how the river would pass through the mountain weather it was a spring connecting two rivers or carved through so I made a spring.
    - Forest areas are somewhat thick patches of canopy trees
    - Pathing has not been done
    - Lighting has not been done
    - Map size was slightly increased to make full use of the 120 x 88

If it gets aprooved it will be on mapsters databse: http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/deathcage1/
otherwise ill find a upload site.

    Your welcome in advance ;)

Thanks guys, Your right with he emergency lights and such. The red colours would also be good for a more danger feel and also would have perfectly contrasted the green.

lol soulcarverr, I agree the lack of explosions is depressing almost but this is a bt more of an aftermath image i guess, maybe the next screenshot i make will have some.

I just made this for fun and thought it turned out decent, I could photoshop the shit out of it and make it look great with maybe some kind of story in it too, but as it is it looks like a terran command bunker and things went sour within.
I sort of forgot to use rule of thirds, harmony and balance when i chose the angle but it turned out better than average so I'm happy.

Please give me any constuctive critisism as I am always looking to improve. :)

posted a message on Would you make players pay to play your maps?

Sure if things are a dollar that would be fine but if it was a big map. I think as a player it would suck seeing all these great games to play but they all cost money to play, for a game we have already payed for. Remember that people aren't just going to make it cost a dollar or something small and you cant be guaranteed you will like the game or the map will be of high quality. As a mapper though I would love that small amount of cash coming in but imo if you really deserve it people that appreciate good maps will donate.

But as a though if you do make your game pay to play, please release demo's so I know what im paying for first thanks.

posted a message on A forum section: Map Testing

I though maybe it would be a nice idea to have a map testing section in the forum where a map maker can just post a quick topic about the map and that they want to test or even just play it and then people viewing the forum can contact them and they can play. A lot of people are complaining about the popularity system with good reason but maybe this could be a good proactive way of dealing with it for now until if and when blizzard fixes it/changes it. although I doubt I'm the first one to have this idea.

If you like you can post some beta test details etc. in here, I wont mind and it wont be hijacking.

posted a message on if sc was a mmo what would u want in it

I would want a free PvP system that works much like Tibia's whereas pvp'ing can be done anywhere outside of the item bank and the temple(respawn) and the consequences are added like a bounty system depending on how many you have killed. eg: red skull: killing three players = drops all items on death and no consequence for attacking red skull player. I think the whole PvP thing in mmo's makes it more fun, especially if you have to qatch your back from strangers, it encourages social interactions with other players to avoid bad encounters and it also adds for a bit of fun when you cbf questing/grinding or hunting/looting..

    @KratsAU: Go

Thanks to masterxel he had a look at the crash log, he told me it was probably a DirectX error.

My system has been having these errors recently so I've done a bit of reinstalling drivers etc. and when it came to directx it said there was an error in the install after finishing. This means my system is generally screwed and I will re-format and reinstall windows in a few weeks. Ill keep you guys posted on the results.

posted a message on Last Straw Broke the Camels Back

I have reinstalled a few times before posting the topic and the repair tool didn't pick anything up, I've gone through and removed registry data as well.

"Why is it pointless for them to give us bonus software?"
If you interpreted this I am sorry I did not mean this. I meant that it is pointless at least by these days standards to produce software and not provide support, considering that they could be the only people that could resolve these problems. If they built it they should be able to fix it, but unfortunately the programmers that built it would probably be too busy to do this and instead would be patching.

"Why should blizzard care that you cant figure out how to properly .... uninstal/ reinstall SC2. Also its in the uela that the editor is as it is and is a non-supported piece of software."
I think after running the repair tool uninstalling was the second thing I did mate. I'm not an end user. I also know its in the EULA that they don't support the editor such was the case in Warcraft 3 as well but not supporting software that is produced by yourself isn't done these days in propriety software, these days its considered lazy. But I can understand why they don't the argument is that they should and my case is an example of the effects to a customer of such circumstances.

"If uninstal and reinstall does not fix it. There is something wrong with your computer." Lets just say I almost enjoyed the humor in this response.

"Blizzard can't afford to train all of its tech support to be experts in the editor. Some of them would probably even quit their job if they had to do that."
That could be true but it all depends on the way blizzard went about it, they wouldn't need to train everyone they could do an 'expertise' system to their customer support and run off management tables from there, also a standard BMS Pyramid Model could implement their new customer service system nicely, but then again I'm not their systems analyst.

"Secondly, what makes you so sure that there will never be any third party editors? They didn't pop up in Warcraft until long after release, too."
Sadly this may be my only hope if I cant fix this issue.

    "H o w _ a r e _ t h e y _ n o t _ s u p p o r t i n g _ i t??"
By not taking the time with their customers to get the software to run. I know i didn't pay for it and therefore they don't have to do anything but if more than just me had the same problem, lets just say a couple thousand has the same problem they would be obliged to look into it and this is my situation, stuck without any support other than my own and that provided by generous strangers on forums.

"If you aren't happy with the editor at the moment or the way the system works, simply take a break and come back in a few months to see if they have fixed it.

There's too many whiners and drama queens at the moment."
Pretty much what my plan has been since it stopped working and after realizing it wasn't getting fixed. But I'm still allowed to be pissed off that I can't have fun mapping.

If anyone here however would like help with their own projects unfortunately I cannot do my terraining but I am talented with photoshop, I'll do anything for free as long as its not a full display sized 'collection'.
