    It's been a long time since I didn't news any cool interface. Sweepingzero is working on a RPG and has done a pretty good job at recreating from scratch the whole interface. He is looking for talented people in order to work on the map :)

    This is the first released edited model! Take nova, put some hairs and glows and you get Kerrigan :) The model tools are becoming a lot more evolved and stable, you should now be able to work on custom models without too much problem!

    Orbital Decay is a 4 player melee map developed toward 1v1 by BoomStevo. I really don't know what else to say ... Play it, it looks well made! (I'm sorry, I'm not really good when it comes to melee maps ...)

    Warcraft 3 Armor Reduction by KorvinGump

    I'm pretty sure that a lot of you are tired of units in Starcraft 2 dying like flies. You want tough units like in Warcraft 3! KorvinGump made a one-trigger system that lets you implement the Warcraft 3 armor reduction. As a result, there will be less units on the battle field and it'll lag less :)

    Since the last tournament had to be cancelled Tinman decided to launch a new one, and with $300 prizes!

    Few days ago HaggisNZ released an impressive car movement engine using physics. Doubotis decided to use it to make a real game out of it!     UPDATE: Xaragoth and Tinman are going to host a map session instead of the tournament. It's being called Custom Live. If you made a map you want them to play tell them! They will be really happy to do so.

    Due to the lack of participants, the SotiS tournament is cancelled!. I realize that having only 2 days to find a team of 3 is a bit too hard. I am sorry for those who wanted to join and watch :(

    In September 2010 Issue of PCGamer sc2mapster has been featured in the useful links for a mapping tutorial they did :) I've read those magazines a lot in my childhood and would never have thought working for a website being written in one of those! That's really awesome! Next time we make the front-page :)

    Play Cinematic Scene by progammer

    Xaragoth during his two workshop showed us how to use the previewer to do actual cinematics. However we had like no idea how to play then ingame, the only solution was to record them to make a video. progammer tackled this problem and found how to do it :) He made a test map that lets you play any of the campaign cinematic. However this area is still unexplored and there are still a lot of gray points.

    I do not news often melee maps as I am not really able to distinct what makes a good or bad one. Samro225am for his map called God's Grove has made a clever thing: he annoted the map with all the special elements (Ramp, Xel Naga, Expands) this way even noobs as me can understand it :)

    As you probably know, we have a wiki but so far it hasn't been useful as it was abandonned. And since a wiki can be really useful we decided to revive it! We are going to do it step by step and the first one is the trigger section. All the triggers are now available on the wiki. So far there is nothing more than what's in the editor BUT it's up to you to add content.

    There are three ways to help!

    • Add comments! You have a question about a specific function, you have discovered something ... Post a comment. It takes 5 seconds and will help everyone out :)
    • If you have knowledge of a subject, edit the article and complete it. You can put links to more explanations, how it reacts in edge cases, ...
    • And finally, if you are viewing a forum thread that asks a question that would better be on the wiki, give a link to the wiki and post the answer there :)

    Hide! is a pretty cool map concept where you have to hide from the slayer as long as possible. It's using a WASD third person view and looks like to be playable without lag on battle.net! I don't know if the game will be a success but I like it :)

    I don't usually watch sc2 replays but this one is so epic! It's a game versus TT1 and MasterAsia that lasts an hour with a lot of action! It's commented by HDStarcraft and is really worth to see. You really want to stay up to the end :)

    HaggisNZ just released a proof of concept map about cars. He made a driving system using physics law that looks really nice. If you want to impress your players, just add it inside your map :)

    Mercenary Battle by Redfox777

    Redfox is working on a heroes + lane map that is really promising. He says that's a DotA-like map but: I am making it faster and giving it a more "actiony" feel to the game (more haloish you could say). Matches will be shorter, death time will be shorter, there are man cannons at the bases to shoot you into battle quicker and the map is much more open. All items are consumables and spawn on the map in specific places like they would in halo.

    Sotis Commentaries by ApolloStarcaft

    Many people are doing custom maps commentaries and that's really great, keep them coming :) Today ApolloStarcaft is commenting the map Storm of the Imperial Sanctum (Sotis) by ekcolnovkol.

    Hello,

    5 months ago we launched SC2Mapster.com at the start of the Starcraft 2 Beta. The Galaxy Editor had not yet been released at that time and we had to edit the Blizzard Maps we were given by using an MPQ editor and notepad. At that time, we had to do all editing by hand, through XML. We've come a long way since those days, now the editor has been released and the size of the community has tripled, and has been growing every passing day.

    With this in mind, we need to expand on our staff in order to keep our community a friendly place! As of right now, we're looking for users to help moderate the forums, though in the future there will be other positions open, such as Wiki Editors, etc. Below is a list of basically, what you would be doing as a moderator...

    Responsibilities

    • Manage the incoming projects (maps & assets): accept them, tell users what they could do to improve it ...
    • Move the threads that are not in the good forums
    • Help people with the software: the WikiCreole markup, questions relative to the projects ...
    • Handle the reported messages
    • Many other things we don't have in mind: basically you are given full rights on the forums to help make them a better place!

    Be an active member of the community

    We don't want to pick people that are just moderating. We want to have people to help us making Mapster better. As a moderator, you see a lot of what's going on in the community and you are privileged to improve it!

    • Be part of the newsing process by telling the cools things that you see.
    • Make useful actions such as keeping up to date a sticky topic (a FAQ, Tutorial listing ...) or contributing to the wiki.
    • Make things move! You'll get support if you want to organize things such as contests, tournaments ...

    How to apply

    Send a PM to Sixen and vjeux (at the same time! click the link) with

    • Your age and the country you live in.
    • The projects you've done (mapping and non-mapping related)
    • What you have done on Mapster so far.
    • What forums you would like to moderate. (Have in mind that the biggest the forum is, the more work there is to do).
    • Give suggestions on how to make Mapster better :)

    Make sure you meet those criteria:

    • Have more than 20 posts on Mapster. We want people that are active in the community right now :)
    • Be motivated to help and have the time to do it properly.

    WoW Model Exporter by chuanhsing

    NiNToxicated has been working on various model im/exporters and the latest one he released was about WoW Models. However the process is really tedious as it involves grabbing files in the mpq, going through 3ds max ...

    Hopefully chuanhsing one of the developers of WoWModelViewer decided to add an export to M3 (Starcraft models) feature. The process is now reaaalllyy easy, you browse your WoW models and if you want one you just click the export button. It exports all the textures and models and all you have to do is to drag them into the galaxy importer!

    So far it contains the same things as NiNToxicated script: Geometry, Materials, Skin & Bones, Animations. The rest needs to be decrypted :)

    Before the release of the game, Mari0B made a nice listing of all cool models that may make into the game as they have been already showed off by Blizzard. Will you be able to tell which ones are available and which ones aren't?

    So far mapster has been a great place for map developers, but we needed some place for custom map players :) I opened a new forum called Map Review where you can talk about the map you played on bnet, post replays, share strategies ...

    If you entered a wrong character name on battle.net, Blizzard is going to allow you to change it. The first change will be free.

    Also, as a side note, Sixen is not a newbie! He is first of his 2v2 diamond league together with net, the ceo of Curse! I wish Blizzard could set-up custom games ranking so I could get my instant of fame too :)

    Icefrog, the creator of DotA AllStars joined Valve some times ago and there are details that encourage us to believe that Valve is working on a standalone DotA: they registred Dota Trademark.

    Also Jon St. John, who is the voice behind Duke Nukem, wrote a twitt "Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at ValveSoftware are awesome!". Talk about it on the forums.

    You played the campaign and seen the cinematics before each mission. This is all done through the Galaxy Editor and Gorandor had the great idea of using all the high quality models and make a cinematic of its own. So far this is only a test but that looks pretty awesome. Imagine this at the beginning of your map :)

    Income Wars Shoutcast by ColbyCheeze

    ColbyCheeze did another shout casting of a custom map. Today he gives the strategy to beat the map "Income Wars" :) If you want more commentaries on custom maps, TinMan is looking for maps to shoutcast!

    In many maps you want a hero and it's really boring to make a nice selection. SweetZombieJesus (Nice nick btw :) ) has just released a library that let you do just that in no time. It will help you focus on the real part of the game!

    Changing Editor Region by Sixen

    As you know, when you upload a map in the US, only the US people can play it. But since your map is great you want everyone to play it! The current solution is to ask people to upload it for you but it is really painful. Sixen has found an easy way to change the region of your editor. This way you can upload the latest versions of the map in a few minutes. The only thing you have to do is to find people that trust you to give you their account.

    1. Go to Start > Run > type regedit
    2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\StarCraft II Editor\Preferences
    3. Right-click in the left-pane, select "New > String Value"
    4. Edit the name of the Key to be, "BattleNetHost" minus the quotes.
    5. Double-click that key, set the value to be "us.logon.battle.net" minus the quotes.

    The server names are as follows:

    • NA: us.logon.battle.net
    • EU: eu.logon.battle.net
    • KR: kr.logon.battle.net

    AC130K - Ruins by malu05

    malu05 has been working on his Third Person Shooter AC130K for a while but he is stuck because of Battle.net latency. Nevertheless he did upgrade the map with many campaign doodads and it looks more awesome than ever.

    Dialog Item Templates by Helral

    So far, people that wanted to do a custom UI had to hide the default UI and code from scratch all their interface. However Helral found a way to move the default elements where you want to!

    Using his Dialog Templates, you can now use any of the individual UI elements made by Blizzard independently of all the others, allowing you heaps of freedom to make the UI look just right.

    Starcraft 2 Lead Writer Interview by Playworks

    Playworks, a Singaporean gaming publication, has done an interesting interview with Brian Kindregan, the lead writer on Starcraft 2, where he reveals a bit about how the story so far came to be, and what might be in store in the future installments of the series.

    Playwork: Tell us, what was your main inspiration when forming the story and the character development?

    Brian Kindregan: Well, the entire StarCraft team is made up of geeks. And we all love science fiction movies, Tvs, books, comic books and games so the range of inspiration was pretty broad. For me, the main inspiration would have to be the first StarCraft game. When you are working on something that has such a rich history, you would already have a sense of what the universe is like, what the people in it are like, where it’s all going. You can actually look at an idea and ask yourself, does this feel like a StarCraft idea.

    Interview with Michael Morhaime by the LA Times

    In a slightly more serious tone, the LA Times interviewed Michael Morhaime about how he got started, the history of Blizzard, and his experience with leading the company to where it is today.

    "We felt it was very likely the fee would be a deterrent for people, and that WoW would not sell as quickly as some of our previous games," he said. All of Blizzard's production decisions were based on that conservative projection.

    But to Blizzard's delight, and terror, WoW sold furiously, leaving the underprepared Blizzard temporarily unable to keep stores stocked with the game. "For the whole first year, we scrambled to keep up with demand," he said. "It probably took years off of our lives."
