    Tutorial: AfterImage by arturusfury

You have probably seen the High Templar after image effect. arturusfury made a tutorial to do it on any unit you want. This will make your map look amazing :)

    Lib Action Bar by Motive

If you are doing a map with a hero you probably want to use a custom action bar like the ones in World of Warcraft. Motive made a generic lib that uses Catalog to adapt the bar to the current unit you are selecting.

    rrowland Interview

Many of you are doing amazing things with the Galaxy Editor. So far I have focused on promoting projects, however I would really like to feature you guys. This is why from now on I am going to do interviews. Today we start with rrowland.

    Quote:

vjeux: Hello rrowland, could you introduce yourself?

I’m Ryan Rowland, I’m 22 and live in Southern California. I have worked on a lot of projects in the SC2 Mapping community during both phases of the beta.

vjeux: Your Thaddius fight entry for the Spell contest has been featured by Blizzard on their Facebook page. It must have been a great pleasure to get that much promotion!

Well I was definitely surprised! I did not expect to get such attention for this video. Of all my projects, it took the least amount of time to create. :P It was actually just something I threw together for fun!

vjeux: Let’s talk about your others projects then! I see you have done an interesting AI: Behemoth AI. Could you tell us what it does and if it was hard to do within the Galaxy Editor.

Behemoth AI is basically a custom AI that is designed to play against players utilizing micro as well as macro. It was started back in the beta when “Very Easy” was the only AI available, however I feel it is still comparable (Even in its current unfinished state) to some of the harder Blizzard AIs. Some examples of the custom micro techniques I have implemented thus far would be the phoenix micro: One phoenix can (slowly) kill 200 food worth of mutas without taking damage. Also, there is custom sentry micro AI that calculates the perfect positions to cast force fields to minimize incoming damage and cut enemy armies in half.

I actually didn’t use the Galaxy Editor to script this AI, I opened, studied and added onto Blizzard’s default AI files, which are written in pure Galaxy code.

vjeux: You are using advanced features of the scripting abilities of the Galaxy Editor. The map Reaper Madness is another example of it. You managed to add physics inside the map. Did you encounter any difficulty in the process?

Reaper Madness was actually the very first map I worked on with the SC2 Editor. I guess I like to jump head-first into the most difficult stuff! I actually didn’t know how vector-based physics worked before working on this map, so I took a couple days to get acquainted with it before implementing it into the map. I actually had a lot of help from the SC2Mapster.com wiki, one page in particular listed every native Galaxy function, which was very helpful for scripting in pure Galaxy.

This map actually got put on ice, and I no longer plan to finish the map due to latency issues on Blizzard’s part. The Battle.Net service has a minimum delay of 125ms, plus WASD movement and tracelines serve to make the experience much laggier; Too laggy for a First Person Shooter game.

vjeux: Ah okay, so I believe you moved on to another project. What is it?

My most recently started project is a custom sprite engine. Basically, using text tags, I’ve been able to implement animated 2D sprites, similar to what you’d see in an old RPG, into an SC2 map. There are a couple hitches that are getting ironed out which are delaying the process (I’m currently waiting). I plan to make a full-feature RPG reminiscent of the old Chrono Trigger and 2D Final Fantasy series once the sprite engine is completely finished.

vjeux: I am pretty sure you are working on some more standard maps that will eventually be playable! :)

Yep, one of my favorite projects is called Sniper Wars (May change in the future, not decided yet). It’s a very classic style of UMS map. Basically, I brought Archer Wars type maps from WC3 and am porting them into SC2. I am aiming to make this map a very in-depth team game (5v5) with a substantial learning curve and a high skill cap for competitive play. I’m still working on this map, but I plan to bring it to Battle.net in the near future.

I have a lot of custom UI and system work invested into this map as well. For instance, I completely remade the inventory and shop system. I also added custom missile handling, custom dialogs and the ability to pick and choose which abilities the player’s sniper starts with.

vjeux: Great, you are working on a lot of awesome projects. As a final word, can you tell us what you think about the Galaxy Editor. What did you like most and what you would like to see improved?

The Galaxy Editor is amazing! There are very problems I have with the editor. I do wish it came with the ability to edit the raw Galaxy file inside the program, although I understand why the limitations exist. I would also have liked to see more support for importing custom models using SC2 textures. Some documentation would have been nice as well. :P Overall, I just think it’s an awesome tool and definitely the most powerful editor in its field.

Planetary Boss Arena 3v3 CTF by Bounty_98

Bounty_98 have been working since the beta on his map Planetary Boss. He made many variants of it and today he releases a 3v3 CTF Arena. You can play it on Battle.net and can check out the video :)

    ZerEvolves by Zeragon

Zeragon and his brother have been working on an Evolve map like in Starcraft 1 and are now publishing it on EU. Have fun playing it :)

    Starcraft Commandos by Decay

Decay is pretty new to the Galaxy Editor and is working on a map called Starcraft Commandos. His project starts looking great and he is looking for help :)

I also just found out this screenshot of the Custom Game Listing during the Blizzcon. I thought you'd be interested :)

    Weekly Terraining Exercise by Mozared

The Weekly Terraining Exercise (WTE from henceforth) is a weekly thread, in which we can... exercise our terraining! The thread will have a single 'theme', and it's up to you to make a terrain around that theme and submit your result within a week, when the next exercise goes up. Whether you're a complete newbie or a Bob Rossian veteran, you can participate. We can all learn from eachother, show off our work and live happily ever after.

This week theme is Dawn of a new era.

    CardCraft by BeLugh

I have recently played a lot of custom maps on the EU Battle.net and I was really impressed by CardCraft, the map is a complete game with a unique interface made through dialogs. It is kinda confusing at first but when you understand how it works it is really fun to play :)

    SC2Movie.com by Vjeux

I've been working on the website sc2movie for some time now and i'm pretty happy to release it. The goal of the website is to regroup in one place all the videos about the mapping. And the best thing is that anyone can add a video, you just have to provide the youtube link :) I hope you like it.

    Tutorial: Game Lobby by ubdead

The game lobby is controlled both by Map Properties and Game Variants. It is not user friendly at all and this is why ubdead has written a wonderful guide to explain all this. I have seen many lobbies that does not appear to work as intended. Read that and you will be able to fix it :)

    Space Bound by AzothHyjal

AzothHyjal just released his map: Space Bound. Check it out :)

But, the real interest relies in Orbit: it is a library that does a N-Body simulations, allowing units to attract and repel each other using mostly realistic physics. This is really impressive!

Open the Campaign Maps by Beider

If you don't know it already, all the campaign is being done using the Galaxy Editor, even the Hyperion! You can check all of them and see how Blizzard did it. This is pretty instructive. If you are afraid, Beider just did it for one map :)

    Snow by gurluas

Blizzard removed a tileset that looks like snow from the beta. gurluas made a sample map to put it back :)

    Cheat Codes by Sixen

Sixen on the official forums have made a compilation of all the known cheat codes.

    Quote:

Update: The Buzz Me! contest has been removed. It was a fun idea at start, but we figured out that the consequences may only be negative. Please come tomorrow for another contest :)

Ultimate Tank Defense has been deleted from Battle.net and cannot be reuploaded again because of inapropriate content. Take care if your map contains stuff that could be dangerous :x

    Roach Snake by Pakaran

Roach snake is the Snake game adapted to real time multiplayer. You eat things on the road to make your tail bigger, and have to get big enough to win. Caution: there are also opponents and monsters on the track :) You can play it on the US and contact Pakaran.702 (NA) if you want an arranged game.

    Anti-Block in TD by Sevenation

While working on his Line Tower Wars, Sevenation had the great idea to reuse the Anti-Block algorithm from a Warcraft 3 map: Mazing Contest by Pender. It is in fact really simple: you take the min and max of the x-coordinate of all the connected towers (relative to the last one created). If the min and max are both equal to the borders, then you are blocking!

  • published the article Change?, Protection, Terrain Overview

As you know, the publishing system is really tough for map makers that did not release their map on day 1. In order to help people, I have decided to feature their maps. If you want to help, just play once those maps today. You are about 15 000 people visiting the website everyday, if 1 on 10 plays the map, it gets to the page 1!

    What to Change?

The Galaxy Editor is great but it's not perfect! This is why I am making an official thread for you to express yourself. Just tell what you'd like to change in the editor! Since we are the one who are using the editor, it is best to say what we would like to see changed (either bug fixes, improvements, new things added ...). It will give Blizzard a chance to see what we really want :)

    Rules

    • Make it constructive, we are here to make a better editor :)
    • Do not hesitate to tell obvious stuff, what is obvious for you isn't for everyone.
    • You can be informal, just make sure that we can understand!
    • Tell all what you have in mind, from the smallest little thing that annoy you to the great but impossible idea you've got.

    Reward

Since it's funnier to do things with a reward in mind, here is all what we can do.

    • 1 month Curse Premium for each improvment you propose that is being implemented by Blizzard! (You will have to PM me when it is done).

    Map Protection by Mjllonirg

Map protection is an issue for many of you. Blizzard added the "Protected" status inside the publishing features but you may not trust it. Mjllonirg has found a way to remove the ability to view the triggers in the editor. You will say it has been possible for ages using some MPQ program. However this time it is done without any 3rd party program :)

Warning: Make a backup, the triggers won't be recoverable after using this technique!

    Terrain Overview

Last part of the overview serie. I hope you enjoyed it :) Thanks to HP-X Arthas that wrote it!

Now, what would a map editor be without the terrain editor? Here we will take a look at the things that can be done using it.

    Terrain

Here is a great example of what some terrain editing together with doodads might look like when it's done.

    Liberty's Crusade by Thunderzak

    Control Lightning

The ability to control lightning is a really cool feature, just take a look at the results and you will see for yourself!

    Terrain Cinematic by monoframe

    Cinematic

This is a sample of the cinematics you will be able to create using the editor.

    Doodads

With clever use of doodads we can create amazing scenery such as this.

    Roads

Roads, everybody use them. Now they can easily be placed on your maps aswell. The video below will show you a finished racing map with roads, terrains, doodads triggers and a really nice result!

The Minigame contest is ending tomorrow. Please make sure you have submitted your map AND have added a youtube video!

Since the current popularity system isn't that great, please PM me the name of the maps you published, I will make a news with the mapster maps so hopefully we can bump them up! If you want to get user feedbacks, add your mapster project url in the description. People will be able to leave comments!

    ReadMe

Here are some tips you want to know about the editor:

    • You can open any map from the Campaign. File / Open / Campaign
    • You can use any of the Campaign assets in your map. File / Dependencies / Add / Liberty (Campaign). Note: There is a bug that prevents using it for already made maps
    • If you are using a custom Game Variant, on the left panel, right click your variant and set it to default. This will prevent the default one (and not the one you want) from being used. Read more.
    • The popularity seems to work this way. 1 "point" is equal to one unique player the last hour. This means you have to have a big friend list to bump your popularity.

Map publishing is broken on EU servers since the digital release. You have a Validation_working_score_set_screen_fail error when publishing. Let's hope it will be fixed soon.

    Lost Viking

In the Campaign you can play the Lost Viking map featuring the Terratron. This is the top down shooter featured by Blizzard during the Blizzcon. (If you are not pro enough, there are Cheat Codes available).

    L800 ETC

The group with Mike Morhaime L70ETC (I am a Murloc, Rogues do it from behind) has first bumped to L80ETC with Death Knight "Nightfall" and now will become L800ETC! Click to see more spoilers from the game files.

    Custom units

Now, last but not least with the data editor. Many of you have probably seen the Überlisk. Well, we had a contest not long ago and had many awesome entries, and here is the winning entry, 28b-x.

    Trigger Overview

Starcraft 2 is now being released across the planet. This is a huge moment we've been waiting for months. Since sc2mapster is a website about map making, it is time to give you a recap of the possibilities of the Galaxy Editor. Today we are going to feature the Trigger Editor. You will see the main new features over Starcraft 1 and Warcraft 3 and get many awesome examples made with it.

Stay tuned, Data Editor and Terrain Editor overviews are coming too!

Thanks to HP-X Arthas that did a great part of this article!

StarCraft, Warcraft 3, StarCraft II Trigger Comparison

The Trigger Editor has greatly improved over the games. At first, in Starcraft, it was just a small box with rudimentary tools. In Warcraft 3 the interface improved a lot and it capabilities too. Starcraft 2 did not made major changes to the design but added a lot of improvments like libraries for example.

    Keyboard Handling

It is possible to intercept any keyboard input (up and down) and mouse click. This gives the ability to make First Person Shooter style maps and more funky ones like this:

    Dialogs

Here we see a great example of dialog usage which differs from a normal custom map.

    Mouse look

Also, we can now freely move the camera with the mouse and use the editor to make our own FPS.

    Bank

You can save data across game using banks

    Quote:

Bank - Open bank <name> for <player> - Opens a bank with the name specified by the name parameter, for the chosen player.

Bank - Preload and synchronize bank <name> for <player> - Preloads and synchronizes bank data for all players when the game loads.

Bank - Restore <Key> of section <Section> from bank <bank> for <player> at <position> facing <degrees> - Restores a unit contained in the chosen bank at the specified key of the specified section. The unit will be created for the specified player, at the specified position, facing a specific angle.

Bank - Save bank <bank> - Saves the specified bank file, allowing you to access stored values later.

Bank - Store boolean <Value> as <Key> of section <Section> in bank <bank> - Stores a boolean value to the specified bank. The section and key parameters determine where the value is stored in the bank file, and must be used to load the value later.

As for storing values, there exists other types we can store, such as real, integer, string, text, point and unit. The syntax for these are the same as for store Boolean.

    Map transitions

We can move between maps and retain the hitpoints, levels etc using the banks.

    New Forums

Start posting on the new forums. And if you want you can even put some SC2Mapster in your message :)

The new search function at the top of the StarCraft II community site is extremely robust. Please be sure to use it to look for similar topics, blog posts, or web pages that may contain the answer before creating your forum topic. Making a new thread on an existing subject will likely result in your thread being deleted. If you continue to repost it you're likely to have your posting privileges suspended for spamming. Worst of all, you'll be making the other forum goers upset that you didn't take a minute to search before posting.

    Rating

The new rating system can be used to promote positive discussion, and demote unhelpful posts, or even report posts that violate the forum code of conduct. By hovering over a post you'll be presented with a thumbs up, and a thumbs down icon. Clicking the 'thumbs down' icon you can choose from a few options. Dislike will rate the comment down. If enough people dislike a post it will be darkened, or with a lot of dislikes it will be hidden. You can also quickly report a post as trolling or spam, or use the report function to fill out a more comprehensive description of the violation. You can only rate each post once. Use it wisely to help foster a positive and helpful forum community.

    Current Features:

    • Packaging
STARCODE reduces the size of information through packaging to it's smallest possible outcome.
    • Base Conversion
STARCODE can convert decimal strings into any other base and back.
This way STARCODE can utilize almost the full range of string characters for best possible compression.
