    It was inspired by Magic the Gathering but is much easier to understand.

    Before the game starts the players choose cards which will build a "store". Then you buy cards from the store to compose your deck. You have to optimize for protection (from attack cards), offence (buy attack-cards) and economy. To win, you buy victory cards from the store, but they dilute your deck so you get crappier hands to play.

    Ive been working a little with the conversation system during the past few days for my own campaign. I've not tried using the conversations for branches. If you want to use branches you need to have the player in cinematic mode. Thats all I know. The campaign transmissions are using the conversation modules quite a lot, since it gives a clear overview of "talk". Running actions seems straightforward though.

    I guess they felt they need an in-between product that would grab hold of WoW players leaving the franschise for other products, while not competing with their new Titan project. I would try it since I like card games, but I'm not into the whole wow universe :) Prefer sci-fi!

    posted a message on Looking for story writer to mercenary campaign

    Like the title says. The core game mod is almost done, but I need help with the writing. My thinking is that the more people are involved in the writing, the better it becomes.

    The work would consist of accessing a google-document, chat over skype and come up with plot ideas and dialog for the transmissions. I have a story skeleton but I'm open for new ideas!

    Im working on a coop campaign. If you want to help out there are many little tasks that needs to be done.

    Examples of tasks:

    • Designing attack wave compositions (by testing different integer parameters to a function I made)
    • Placing doodads and paint terrain
    • Write story dialog
    • Coming up with interesting behaviours that the attack waves should have (double speed, cloak, explosion on death etc.)
    • Draw loadscreen graphics. I have a template which you can use.

    The project is separated into a AI mod (attack wave behaviour), a story mod (dialog), Acheivments mod and Core Gameplay mod. Then you would have maps that use these mods.

    Good read!

    - In some ways its useless to point out all the errors in the old campaigns. That content has already been produced and wont change at any time. - I dont think the SC universe was ever built or written to hold much story. If a new scifi IP would be established today, I think a company like blizzard would put much more effort into the story-writing. The game is a 90s legacy. Back then it was very much "I want this thing in the game"->write a strange story about how it would fit. That rule still applies and is used. Personally I think its sad in some ways. As a gamer I'm familiar with the SC universe and feel at home there, even though its poorly constructed (with this I mean gimmicky and glitchy). All in all - I have decided not to get hung up on the story. It is what it is :)

    Anyway. For LotV I would like to see more of female Protoss. I think they are an asset of the Protoss race that have not been used in gameplay. I also think it would be a cool "female" story about empowerment and freedom. Perhaps they cut their psionic chords (burn-bra-event) and become dark templars. I would also like to see less of the Jerrigan love-story, 2 games is enough. Unless of course, the writers can come up with some triangle-drama with a bisexual protoss. That would make it worth it. I would like to see more epic space battles. I would like to see all the fractions getting involved in this Amon battle, and cringe under the pressure of the challenge. You know - old alliances being ripped apart now that your very existance is at stake. I would like to see more complex melee gameplay: bases moving around; you get wiped out and have to rebuild your stuff again. Perhaps some vulcanoes under the minerals fields so that you never know weither your base will go up in smoke. More drama. Also. I would like to have some coop-campaign missions. The final mission absolutely HAVE to be fightable in coop-mode. Its like the final mission in Hots. Why was that not coop? One player plays Raynor, one Zerg and a third is playing Dota with that 3.5 armed guy. A tower defence map would be awsome. A puzzle game inside a Protoss temple: old switches and relics that come to life. Upgrades to the sentry with cloak field (like the shield but with cloak instead) and chain-beam (you can connect two sentries with a beam, that can cut through things like a trip-wire.

    And more smoke effects, of course.

    It could be that you have a conflict between the dependencies. Liberty multi and Liberty are the same mod, but the multi one is for melee maps and the other is for arcade. If you use both you will get bugs and errors. The campaign contains units and spells and the story mod is for the cutscenes. You can use these is you want to.

    I would solve it by copying your map to a safe location, and then remove the Multi mod. Then I would remove the Liberty Mod. I think the campaign contains the standard Liberty mod. Then I would replace the Liberty (campaign) with Hots (campaign). I believe the Hots campaign contains the Liberty core & campaign. But - backup before you do anything!!!!

    Try to keep it in WoL. Change it to Hots if you really have to. I'm building my core mods on WoL and then if I need it, I will make mission maps based on Hots, to gain access to the new stuff.

    It would be interesting to get a conversion rate (how many of WoL:ers have converted to Hots:ers). Anyone got sales statistics?
