As I know France produce 80% of its energy from nuclear plants.

I don't know the exact number but I think you're close enough... Since Fukushima though, we are very concerned about the use of nuclear power in our country. We'd like to switch to new, more ecological solutions, because our nuclear plants are getting old (some of them are 40 years old), and the structures themselves could fail us. We're slowly switching to offshore wind turbines, but I don't think it will be enough. Anyway, I think I remember Hollande talking about our nuclear plants during his campaign, and he'd be a fool not to do something about them. It was among a few other topics that should be dealt with quite soon.

Even if I agree the "masses" shouldn't care too much about it, this is a problem we are totally aware of. Back in the days of Chernobyl, the government tried to make us believe the toxic cloud would stop before reaching our borders. It has even become a common joke nowadays, to point out how the government is trying to lie to use with totally absurd statements. I don't think they'd be able to fool us twice, even though Japan tries to hide the truth we know the cloud is still expanding as we speak.

    Quote from Hookah604: Go

Sarkozy reminded me of Hitler of how he was speaking and being short. Its also funny how he slammed immigrants in the last month just to gain popularity, when both of his parents were immigrants.

Ahah! True... And somehow, it seems like talking about immigration (after 5 years of silence on the topic) still helps get them some points. That, and talking about violence and insecurity. Either French people tend to forget VERY quickly, or they're just dumb. It's not like the average Joe is really aware of what true violence is, besides what the TV is showing them I'm pretty sure a huge majority of them has never witnessed a neighbor shot to death, or their house being burgled. I can't understand why they'd vote to "feel safer" if they don't know what unsafe is...

    Quote from Hookah604: Go

If you think EU helps Greece, than you are delusional. EU is bunch of unelected politicians who try to make more and more laws over countries, that they know nothing about.

Greece is too proud of itself to ask for help, but they need Europe nonetheless to avoid falling into a civil war. So whether they want it or not, it's in the EU's interest to keep Greece in the union. Whether we should keep them in the union or not is a matter that should be dealt with AFTER the crisis is over. That would be extremely weak and coward to let them deal with their crisis alone, and I think the same applies to Spain or any other country in Europe. I agree with Mozared, we have limited resources and at some point we'll be running out of them. You can't change the way the world works if you keep everybody isolated from each other, that's the kind of decision the entire world should be concerned about. Something huge is over, now is time to think about our future instead of just trying to keep the boat floating while it obviously can't. If the solution won't come from politicians, let it come from the people. At least, let's give them the benefit of the doubt. It's worth trying IMO. Some people consider nothing can be done if our constitutions are not rewritten (among other things), and I agree with them.

    Quote from Hookah604: Go

I dont think there is real Capitalism in this world currently. And I think any other economic system is dangerous with the current mental level of humanity.

I agree with the second part, but it doesn't mean it can't be done... I can't tell if 2012 is the year for this yet, but eventually things HAVE to change and it will. My sense of patriotism is close to zero, but one thing I know for sure is that humanity faced tough challenges in history, and always managed to find a solution. It just takes time, and it's not something that can be done without considering the help from (and opinion of) other nations.

Not that I want to blame capitalism alone for the crisis we're in, but you have to admit there is something wrong with stock markets and how they managed to dry entire countries out of their wealth. I don't know of any country in the world which hasn't astronomical debts to pay. That's enough of a proof to me there is some kind of a system somewhere, causing all our troubles intentionally. Capitalism led to speculations, speculations led to "ghost money", countries are now dry. Now we've reached a point where everyone is lacking money, and the natural resources we've based our business models on are slowly being wasted.

There's a phrase in French that says "c'est comme scier la branche sur laquelle on est assis", which basically means we know we're putting ourselves in danger but we still won't stop. It can't last forever though, it will either die by itself (probably making some people in Wall Street insanely rich in the process), or the people will force it to change (either by fighting or using democracy).

Sarkozy reminded me to Hitler. Even though I am Hungarian. I dont know much about Hollande, but I think he will be just another puppet.

I agree about Hollande, but I don't see how Sarkozy is even remotely close to being Hitler. Sarkozy has done terrible things (which I personally think were liberty killers), but there's no comparison with Hitler. And I honestly don't think any president would have done better, given the circumstances.

Which is pretty much my opinion about Obama as well, maybe people from the US disagree about what he does, but I don't think he's worse than any other candidate. I actually like the guy, though he's probably not as "clean" as he pretends to be, I'm pretty sure he has done great things for the US in these times of crisis. I'd rather see him elected once again, rather than any other candidate.

    Quote from Hookah604: Go

I can imagine anything for the next 5 years. Worst is Global war, best is localized small competing direct democracies without fucking retarded "leaders".

I don't think we're heading towards global war. We're all in it so deeply we have other matters to deal with, and we NEED to join our efforts. If any solution is found to the current events, I think it can only come from unity, not dividing ourselves. Politicians may be complete douchebags from time to time, but they're not stupid. They'll do anything they can to prevent another global war. Of course we're just in the early years of a huge crisis, but as far as I can tell I don't remember hearing any president in favor of division, exclusion, and/or war to put an end to the crisis.

Europe is helping Greece even though the entire country is falling apart and civil war is coming. Spain is not looking good either, but I don't think we should put an end to the EU. I wouldn't be surprised though if capitalism has to end in the next years to come. Like any ideology, I think it's not supposed to last forever. Maybe it's time we let it go, before it makes the entire world collapse (third-world included). I'd rather completely change our business models rather than divide the Europe and hope the crisis will just go away by itself...

    Quote from Zolden: Go

But actually, Russians are angry about Putin, there are protest movements in Moscow last few days, hundreds of people are getting arrested every day, but it doesn't decrease their amount. Some cops refuse to arrest protestants, and they are getting arrested too. So, there is a little chance, that Putin will fall.

Ha! Thought so! I never really liked the guy... He's sooooo obviously linked to the mafia and corruption. He was way too confident in his election, there was something really odd about how (even here in France) TV news were already sure he was going to be president once again. I'm not entirely up to date with the situation in Russia, but one thing I know for sure is that Putin is corrupted and it would be better for Russia if he was never again the leader of this country.

I feel weird about Russia actually, we barely hear from this country in the news around here, which is usually a sign that things are going so terribly wrong they'd better not talk about it. It reminds me of Fukushima by the way, we've heard about it for weeks but now everyone is mute... The problem is getting worth every day but they're trying to make us think there's nothing to worry about.

    Quote from Mozared: Go

As for Hollande... I'm glad you guys FINALLY got rid of Sarkozy.

...and so are we! :D The (not so) funny part about him though is that, during 5 years, people were all complaining about what he did. IMHO he just went wild, like a child in a playground... Then a few days ago, he scored 48%. French people make me sick sometimes, in times like these you realize they can't be trusted. They blamed Sarkozy for years, but when it comes to kick him out, half of them decided he should stay... I don't like Hollande that much but let's be honest, there is no way I'd vote for a president once again after he left us in such a mess. Sarkozy is one of the reasons I'm leaving France for another country.

    Quote from Mozared: Go

The news said France was instigating a rule that forced video networks to give all presidentials the same amount of airtime, which I considered possibly the best democratic move any country has made since the US' independence war. Upon looking into the case however, it seems they were talking about the time a presidential candidate joining in on a TV debate gets to make his point. Which basically makes the rule useless.

I'll probably have to check a few sources about this, because I'm not really sure what happened. The TV debates were indeed limited to a certain amount of time per candidate, but I'm not sure if medias like internet or newspapers actually had any kind of restriction.

    Quote from Mozared: Go

It's one of the most liveable countries in Europe, if not the world, and I think only Scandinavia beats us on that (and perhaps Canada).

    That's also what I heard... :)

We're 6 months away from the election of a new president in the US, and both Russia and France elected their new president just a few days ago... I live in France myself, and I've always wondered what the public image of our president(s) could be in other countries. Just a reminder, if politics are taboo around here (just like topics about religion and such), simply remove/lock the thread... I don't care that much about it. I just thought it would be interesting to hear an external point-of-view about what you guys think of a president who isn't yours. To be honest I couldn't care less about the 2 guys I had to decide between this year, so I don't care if you blame them both for being international assholes! :D

Of course the thread can also be used to talk about the president of your country or any other president/political figure you'd like to talk about, though the main purpose isn't to discuss politics so-to-speak but rather tell your opinion about the public image of the (wo)men governing us. What do you think these leaders can do to put an end to the current crisis? What do you like (or don't) about them? What do you think will change in 2012 and the next 5 years to come, with these (wo)men in charge?

    Quote from yukaboy: Go

    Hey, guys!

A couple days ago, I got inspired because I realized that I haven't seen any maps that actually had water covering a specific cliff level and allow players to build on it.

    http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/flooded-slums/

Although it's not really made to let you build on the low cliff level, it's actually the first melee map I finished with the SC2 editor AND it's partially flooded (hence its name). I should upload/share the latest update here but I'm just too lazy. It's been available on EU for months though, I'm still planning to share it in the US when I'll be in Canada... My other melee map (Rooftop Gardens) was made with the same idea of creating a unique atmosphere, this time by adding fog, mist and clouds to blur the vision and make the entire arena kind of "fantastical". My point being you should put a lot of efforts in creating a unique atmosphere in your maps as well, in the end I think that's what makes your map better than the average melee map (in addition to your sense of details and your knowledge of gameplay situations, to make a properly balanced map allowing any kind of strategy). Also, as Scorp just said, you need to have more than 1 access to any point of interest in your map (bases, xel'naga towers, battlefields, etc...).

I doubt the features changed in patch 1.5 will do anything to what's needed for this to work (it's pretty basic, honestly), but I see your point. The patch might actually fix the only thing I wasn't able to fix: physics preventing a zergling shot in mid-air to fall to the ground! Right now, when you kill a zergling during his leap, both the blood splat and the death model stay in mid-air... :/

I'm not really here to ask for a tutorial, but rather to ask if any of you guys could be interested in a pretty basic step-by-step tutorial on how to make a unit similar to the raptor from HotS... I'm using a modified zergling in one of my latest maps which is basically a zergling with the reaper jump ability + a few animations and sounds to make it look and sound better. It's fairly easy to make, I think users with an average knowledge in Data editing could do it themselves just by looking at my test map. I'm just wondering if it's worth creating an entire tutorial for this, now that we know HotS includes raptors, or if I should just share the test map here.

posted a message on What Format do Soundtracks have to be in?

OGG files are way lighter than WAV files (OGG is compressed, WAV is not)... You can also use VLC Media Player to convert an audio/video file to OGG (in the File menu, there is an option to convert files to other audio/video formats). This software is totally free and doesn't need to install tons of codecs, it works perfectly fine for this task and I used it to convert sounds for every single map I made with the SC2 editor. If you need to edit your sounds though, VLC can't do it as it's just a media player/converter. But Audacity is pretty good for that, as Taintedwisp suggested.

About the import itself now, it's quite simple but you need to do it step by step without messing up or it won't work and can cause some nasty errors. Open the Import window in the editor, select Import in the menu, browse for your files, then save your map. Then create sounds for each imported media files in the Data window (sounds tab), then include these sounds in the soundtrack(s) you'll also have to create (soundtracks tab). To use the soundtrack(s) ingame, you have to add an action in a trigger called "play soundtrack".

He basically keeps expanding like crazy (5 bases or more, in approx. 10 minutes) and he keeps doing that each time he loses a base (he can, because he has an incredible income very fast). He also keeps spamming the main enemy base with marines (barely upgraded at first) to keep his enemy from expanding or attacking. In the end he owns 10+ bases and countless barracks, while his enemy can barely hold 3 bases. From what I've seen in other videos from Dragon, his opponents usually (rage)quit because, at some point, they don't have any income left to hold. Even players from the Master League don't stand a chance. Dragon just have to keep pushing endlessly with marines, and he wins. He doesn't care about losing units to banelings/colossi/siege tanks or whatever, because he can train them by waves of 50 while the opponent just runs out of resources. In fact, he sacrifices his SCVs to be able to train even more marines, then uses mules by dozens to collect minerals. ;)

ya, but you tested that against the AI so it's not valid

I'm answering almost a month late... It took me quite some time to find it again, but I knew there were games from a pro player totally owning his opponents with marines. Here is one, have fun watching!

    Embed Removed: https://www.youtube.com/v/fXlWL3K_BbA?fs=1

EDIT: This one is even more obvious when it comes to using marines only:

Training mass marines is more effective when not fighting against AI, because a human player usually won't attack around 6:00 like the AI does. It gives you much more time to put these strategies into place, and time is money...

...If you search "slayers dragon troll" on Youtube, you'll even find more videos of epic trolling from him. He's a pro Korean player so it's not *that* easy to do it yourself, but still, I'm pretty sure anyone can do a great deal of damage with a little bit of training on that specific build order. Dragon can basically win with any kind of Terran unit, from reapers to ravens, even spamming with mass CCs... If anyone needed evidence that Terrans are OP (or the game balance is a joke), I think this is it.

    Galaxy isn't easy.

The Portal 2 editor is nothing less than Hammer (aka Worldcraft, the editor used to create the whole Half-Life series). Like any 3D editor (Unreal or Farcry, just to name a few games), it's more complicated to design in 3D... especially when it comes to scripting and you have no choice but to write lines of code yourself. SC2 is the easiest and most intuitive editor I've seen in decades. Try creating maps with the Skyrim editor and see the difference.

... *oh old people* and their preconceived hatred of video-games...!

It's not only seniors, unfortunately... How many times it happened to me to talk to a girl in a bar, and when she asks what I do for a living:
    "-I'm a level designer.
    -Like an architect?
-No, I build levels in video games.
-Oh, you're a programmer then! (<- my personal favorite... or not!)
-I just design them in 3D, I barely have any skill in programming.
    -But you're a geek, right?"

...and the rest of the conversation is pretty much all about "I don't like games, games are evil, so I don't like you". Sometimes people are a little more understanding about video games (usually when they are players themselves, basically they know it's not always about "having a gun and shooting people"), but overall it never leads anywhere hence the lack of social life. As soon as you work anywhere near a computer, you're considered a geek. The cliché of a geek is very damaging, if not pejorative, people are not always as direct as seniors but you can tell they have exactly the same criticisms in mind.

    Quote from Yeti434: Go

Overall, I am pretty happy and will probably get this game day 1. My only concern is that it grows addictive but not fun. I think, as far as abilities go, they did a really good job with the heros. The Demon Hunter is probably my favorite, because setting caltraps, jumping, and rapid fire is just so damned fun.

I share that feeling. I only played with the Hunter during open beta and I enjoyed her skills a lot. The level up system makes the game really addictive, but the genre itself is so repetitive that even D3 will be boring at some point. To be completely honest, just playing the beta was already kind of boring, past the first 3 levels I encountered almost no challenge with my Hunter. Getting the follower a little bit later makes the beta even easier to beat, you'll never get hit except by some archers. Even the skeleton king was easy, I dodged all of his attacks easily (there is an ability that makes you move away very quickly) and kept spamming him with arrows from afar thanks to the rapid fire ability. But I expect the official game to be better and tougher, more balanced than what we've seen this weekend.

I have one question though, in case any of you has the answer... Will we be able to keep our character(s) from the beta version when we'll have the official game? I was kind of proud of the magical items I had in my inventory so I'd like to know if this character is saved somewhere so that I can use it when I'll buy the full version of the game.

From what I've read about the latest update (I checked right after the end of the open beta weekend), your friends in SC2 are now also accessible in D3... it probably also means you can chat with or invite them from one game to another, and it's even more likely that the chat channels will work the same way in both games.
