lol Ok, I may be eating my words on that. Perhaps the UK version is different from the North American version... however, the word here is not interchangeable.
Hence, why, if you use the word dyke even on the forums as opposed to dike, you get a spell check error.
How can I lose reputation because of a dictionary? When I published the dictionary without fully reading it, I had in mind the idea that random words with no context and no sentence would not offend anyone to the point of reporting a map. Whoever felt offended and reported it did that even knowing that he/she was offending the whole starcraft community.
I bet it was like: "I'm a middle-age mother, and I'm fucking reporting this shitty map because my naughty 8-years-old son is fucking saying fucking bad words because of this stupid game. Last night, that son of a bitch called me a dyke!"
Alright, using the example they gave you: dyke. Not to be confused with the word dike, and no, the two are not interchangeable. Google any online dictionary. Because this is a word with no double meanings, it needs no context or sentence. It can only be taken as a derogatory slang for lesbian. So, I bet a more accurate situation was something like: "I'm a girl and I'm reporting this, because that word is offensive." or "I'm a guy and I'm reporting this, because that word is offensive."
If it were a word like queer, then I could see your point. It could mean either odd, strange, or it could be used as a derogatory slang for gays.
Erm, a person who is so damn bothered by a random bad word to report a map should be... I can't even describe his state of mind. Must be something similar to a fanatic vegan. Why blizzard's politics about such things is so agressive? Doesn't make sense.
But it does make sense. They have a duty to provide a non-hostile environment for their gamers. I think they generally expect the norms of social etiquette... that is to say, for the most part, they're not going to have to do a lot of moderating because most people are reasonable (hence why we see games like Risk, despite this apparently being in breach of their rules). However, if a map is reported they have to take it seriously.
I never played Warcraft 3 or DotA so I guess I don't really get the appeal... but I did try SotIS for SC2 and I had no idea what I was doing.
This is probably a gross reduction but am I to understand its like Desert Strike (for those of you who have played it) + heroes/items? Because I like Desert Strike. :)
Anyway if Valve is giving it a face lift, I'd try it. :)
Never seen the show before but I gotta say I love the idea of a StarGate system for choosing missions/planets... very very cool. And the demo video looks great.
I think this "controversy" is being taken too far...
Suffice it to say, Blizzard reserves the right to ban your map from their servers if they deem it to be in any way offensive. Why is this surprising? Let's not go overboard - this isn't fascist or big business pushing around the little guy. Those guidelines are just that, guidelines. They're entirely reasonable. Use your head, what they're referring to is: you can't make a map recreating a genocide... and you can't make a map where the object is to burn down a synagogue or a church... This is generally offensive. Seems fair, no?
Someone was offended by the content of your map and reported it. It got banned. Get over it.
Next time, maybe you'll read through the 32,000 words. Seems a tad irresponsible to publish them without having any idea what could be in there. After all, it's your online reputation and your account.
PS: What the hell are you guys talking about. There are maps on the NA servers right now named Final Fantasy Open RPG and Resident Evil and Dragon Ball Z, not to mention European Risk, etc etc... so clearly you're over reacting.
PPS: Bottom line is, you are playing their game. If you can't accept the fact that they reserve the right to enforce the rules as they see fit, don't buy the game, don't play the game. Go read a book or do something productive. This is video game land now... there is no inalienable right to free speech in video game land.
So far I've redone an old ladder map, Crusader. It's 4 player, could be fun 2v2. My remake has a front door only, with destructable debris blocking your small natural. Xel Naga tower in the center... The remake was designed to be a bit smaller than the original, ideally faster paced. I figured the close proximity of all the bases would make it ideal for harassment... but this was my first melee map so I'm not really sure how it's going to rank.
PS: Anyone know why I'm unable to click/load attachments anymore? Images work fine but anything else loads as a text file, and the only way to get them to work is to right-click save as and type the correct file extension. :/
First of all, a dike refers to a levee or embankment designed to hold back water. A dyke is a derogatory term for a lesbian. And according to your Blizzard thread, a few users have listed other offensive words they've seen in your game. I never played the game so I can't really comment on that, but it is what it is.
For those of you saying "it's stupid they ban people over inappropriate word usage," it seems unlikely they banned him for ONE inappropriate word, but DYKE is particularly offensive. I know that here in Ontario, Canada, if you spray-painted DYKE on the hood of someone's car, they'd be investigating a hate crime.
I'm certain Rodrigo's intention wasn't to offend or hurt anyone, but his intentions don't matter. Blizzard is shielding its end-users from racist or sexually derogatory terms to protect the integrity of their game... as they should and as they are entitled to do so, since they made the game.
I'm fairly certain there are only two types of road anyway, Mar Sara and Korhal. Mar Sara being the more beaten up of the two. And of course the Tarsonis train tracks... but look at Blizzard's urban maps from the campaign for ideas... they used a tonne of doodads and textures around the road to make it look nice.
You could also simply make your own roads like replaywarrior said using the terrain and doodads.
Are we allowed to do more than one submission? lol I'm not even sure if I'll have time to get one done, but I had 2 in mind that I would love to recreate, and the second is kinda iffy...
There's probably a way... if, say, you made the ceiling out of doodads... when the camera is zoomed out, set the ceiling doodads visibility to 0%. When zoomed in, 100%, or even like 15% when zoomed out.
Great work malu, love the attention to detail and the small touches like the different sounds for the flashlight switching on and off. Little things like this make maps/games in general that much more immersive.
