Finally, some statistics to back up your words. It doesn't take into consideration crossfire scaling, however. But you do have some extent of technical knowledge; I was tiring of your narcissism and dull, unoriginal insults.

But all this seems to be a rather useless conversation, considering the OP hasn't logged in since the creation of this thread. Thus I will refrain from posting further.

Wow, you have a poor personality.

You spent $6000 on your rig and you've only got two 5870's? I have Xfire 6870's in my oh-so-grand $1300 rig. So what I'm saying is that you're not spending money efficiently; and it doesn't matter how much money you have, spending money effectively is always important.

You say that rig is for gaming, but I know of no game that needs that kind of a setup to run at the highest possible settings. Thus, at the high-end of the hardware such as those, you're paying thousands of dollars more for typically just a marginal difference.

The highest there would cost you a lot less than $8000, and seems to have 580's instead of 590's, but I imagine it's probably good enough for whatever you could possibly need.

This thread is a bigger joke. We don't need site traffic if it's traffic from pointless and unconstructive topics like this one.

If the problem is the teachers not being strict enough, that's a simple enough fix. Just raise the standard for yourself. Go above and beyond what's asked, and try to get the most out of your education. Because in the end, learning something and improving yourself is far more valuable than whatever grade you get at the end.

I know it's easy to be lazy if you're allowed to, but if you don't want to be another run-of-the-mill student and not stand out at all, then it's best to keep high standards for what you do. This is what the Japanese society does naturally by itself, and I believe their education system is a lot better off.

Highschool does seem pointless a lot of times. In some countries, they do just focus on whatever you're talented in, instead of forcing every subject upon you. I know I had to take two years of Spanish which I had absolutely no interest in. That was the only class I ever failed, I believe.

But sometimes, later in life you do realize that some of the things you learned weren't so useless after all. For example, if you do well in highschool and learn all that you can, then you might not have to re-take the basics if you go to college. I had always thought that the complicated algebraic equations and geometrical problems were kind of pointless, but later on I realized that programming actually uses a lot of those things. (Good thing I'm an artist...)

School's not so bad whenever you're in college and actually learning about something that you're passionate about. Otherwise, yeah, it can definitely be a bore.

posted a message on A delayed devil's advocate thread

No good maps have been produced because of low support, or more like opposition from Blizzard. When they do support the mapmakers, it won't be because "We want to see fun maps made with our game," they will always be thinking "How can we use the mapmaking community to get us more money?" Since the overwhelming popularity of World of Warcraft, I believe they have learned that high-quality work is no longer necessarily needed to make money. Thus they adopted a more capitalistic perspective, similar to that of McDonald's or Wal-mart.

The editor is more powerful than previous ones, true, but it's also obscenely user-unfriendly and probably one of the least intuitive programs I've ever used. (At least the data editor portion of it.) Complexity does not always equal better, sometimes it just means the workflow becomes unnecessarily longer.

You always see people always whining about these things, and I know it gets old. But people are, and have been, whining for a reason. Starcraft 2's custom map scene could've been so much more, and it's sad to see how little support it has gotten from Blizzard. Perhaps Blizzard will attempt to salvage it, and if they do make a turn-about, then I might go back to mapping. But I don't think I'll be holding my breath.

I would probably enjoy such a map, assuming it was well-made. I had thought about making something similar myself, just don't have the time or enough motives for doing so.

Well, from looking at your portfolio, I couldn't see anything that referenced or pointed to:

"A minimum of 5 years game design experience including lead design experience on a shipped product"

So I'm going to say that was probably one of the major points. Blizzard's probably not the easiest company to get into if you're trying to break into the game-design industry, which you seem to be.

    Also, what Chiquihuite said.

posted a message on Modding/ Portfolio vs Education?

You can't get a job without a portfolio, either as an artist or a programmer. If someone ever did manage to get a position without a portfolio, whoever hired them would have to be extremely desperate. However, someone could get a job as a tester without a portfolio, and possibly work their way up.

posted a message on Modding/ Portfolio vs Education?

Most people don't have the self-discipline and self-motivation required to educate themselves completely. That's what schools are for, and higher education is anything but a waste of time.

Plus, if someone self-proclaims they have an education, it holds a lot less merit than a well-established acknowledgment of it, also known as a degree.
