Autodesk use to allow students to download Max 2011 for free. However, it seems that window has closed now as 2011 is no longer offered. It seems your only bet is to pirate it or buy it now.
Some gear sets don't have a good color scheme for adding team colors. This was a test for doing a recolor while adding team colors. I think it came out pretty decent. Changed some colors to black and others were made into team colors. That way the team color isn't too prominent but still noticeable.
I don't think there's anything wrong with remakes. As long as they stay true to the original and build upon the strengths. It's a great way to learn the editor for new people as well.
I learned how to create maps by looking at other peoples work back in the day. Then again I was 12 when I first started making maps on SC1.
I couldn't disagree with you more. I loved warcraft 3's custom maps, and they were much better than "most" of the starcraft 2 maps out there. PLEASE everyone remake as many good classic Warcraft 3 Custom maps as you can and dont listen to this guy!!
Inventing new original stuff is exciting, but 4/5 times you spend a thousand hours on a map just so Starcraft 2's Shitty as FUDGCICLES popularity system can shut you down and Shitake mushroom all over your dreams. I gave up on trying to make original maps because too many starcraft 2 arcade players are casual and cannot comprehend more than 1 instruction at a time.
With this being said, I am currently working on a remake of an open RPG from Warcraft 3 because there are literally only 1 or 2 decent RPG's on Starcraft 2 right now.
I think the community needs to go in the == EXACT == opposite direction as the OP intended. I think we should be reviving our favorite maps instead of trying to reinvent new shapes for the wheel of fun (and the wheel of fun I am referring to here is Warcraft 3 custom maps because they are inarguably much funner than most Starcraft 2 maps, and we need more maps like this availiable to the arcade).
Well Im going to end my rant and attempt to get a lobby to test the alpha version of my remake of a Warcraft 3 ORPG map, and I must say it is the most fun i've had playing any of the maps I've made since Warcraft 2 to now.
If it's a fantasy style ORPG you'd probably love the WoW models I'm doing.
Next I create a behavior that will let the actor know when to show, hide, or swap a texture. This too only takes a few seconds.
Example:
Show Back
Behavior type: Buff
(Basic) Behavior Name: Show Back
Anything else you want to do to the behavior
Hide Back
Behavior type: Buff
(Basic) Behavior Name: Hide Back
Anything else you want to do to the behavior
After creating the behavior I go to the units actor and add events. Some of these can be used for all sets of cloth armor. The behavior is applied by having an item equipped in your inventory.
Examples:
Swap to Cloth Texture
Behavior.Cloth1.On
TextureSelectByID Cloth1
Behavior.Cloth1.On
Create Cloth1 Helmet
Behavior.Cloth1.On
Create Cloth1 Left Shoulder
Behavior.Cloth1.On
Create Cloth1 Right Shoulder
Behavior.ShowClothPants.On
TextureSelectByID ShowClothPants
Behavior.ShowClothGloves1.On
TextureSelectByID ShowClothGloves1
Behavior.ShowClothPants.On
TexutureSelectByID Hide Pants
Behavior.ShowClothPants.On
TextureSelectByID Hide Legs
Behavior.ShowClothGloves1.On
TextureSelectByID Hide Arms
This is almost exactly how mine looks and this is the result.
After setting up your declarations go ahead and create a texture in the data editor that resembles each declaration. You must have one for each individual texture or you can/will have issues. I found this out the hard way when I changed the main texture for a model and it would no longer swap textures. It's simple and takes a few seconds.
Examples:
Naked Human Male
(Baisc) Editor Name: Naked Human Male
(Basic) Editor Prefix: Human -
(Basic) File: Assets\Textures\Naked Human Male.dds

Two more sets of leather armor added.

You should lower the head and raise the middle of the back up a bit. Murlocs are rounded like a half circle.
Also the nose area should be flat as it extends up his head. Yours is too rounded, use a fish head as a guide. It should be extremely boney looking.

Done some updating to the way I do these models.
Here's a list of all of the texture declarations I use to hide and show the different meshes.
