For me texturing has been biggest problem with terraining and I have finally found quite easy way to make quite good looking terrain.
I'm using only two textures. Choose one main texture and one texture to "spice up" terrain. You can use whole pallette but it works quite well with only two.
On Char tileset Rock + dirt looks good. On Bel'Shir "Grass light" and "Dark Dirt" look good.
I have used normal "add texture"brush at value 140 to add dirt. Why 140? 140 is more than 50% of 255. This way dirt areas are covered by "dirt" foliages instead of grass.
To make small hills all over the map use height tool "Noise" at value 60 and big brush and if some areas got too sharp use "Smooth" at value 10.
Few pictures.
Hope this helps someone :)

One more tip: While using add texture brush Shift + click removes (dirt) if some area got too much.
You can get quite far with just 2 or 3 textures. In fact, you rarely even ever want more than 4 in one general area. 3 seems to be an ideal number though. Try adding some noisey Bel'shir Brush underneath areas that have plants in the first terrain - success guaranteed.
